    Podcast Summary

    • Struggling with unexpected setbacks in weight loss journeyDespite progress, old habits can derail weight loss journey. Letting go of guilt is crucial for maintaining progress and focusing on the journey ahead.

Even after making significant progress on a weight loss journey, old habits can still sneak up and derail you. Anna shared an experience of giving in to cravings for unhealthy food despite being well-prepared and on the verge of a major milestone. The unexpected slip-up left her feeling guilty and frustrated, but also reminded her of the importance of acknowledging and addressing these moments rather than dwelling on them. It's a common struggle, and one that many people, including those in weight loss groups, face. Letting go of guilt is a crucial aspect of maintaining progress and focusing on the journey ahead. We're Claire and Anna, an unofficial Slimming World podcast where we discuss various topics related to our own weight loss journeys. We're not medical professionals, but rather two individuals sharing experiences and insights. And no, we won't be discussing medical procedures or spot treatment in this podcast. Instead, we'll explore ways to overcome challenges and continue moving forward.

    • Exploring the Slimming World Podcast for Motivation and SupportThe Slimming World Podcast provides motivation, support, and a community for individuals following the Slimming World diet. It focuses on broader topics, addressing emotional aspects of weight loss, and can be accessed through various podcast platforms.

The Slimming World Podcast, though not officially affiliated with Slimming World, serves as a source of motivation and support for individuals following the Slimming World diet. The podcast, which releases new episodes every Monday morning, can be easily accessed by subscribing to various podcast platforms. The hosts encourage listeners to reach out with topics or queries they may have, creating a community relevant to each person's unique journey. The podcast aims to focus on broader subjects rather than specific brands or foods. The hosts also discussed the importance of addressing the emotional aspect of weight loss, specifically the guilt often associated with food and body image, which can negatively impact individuals' relationship with food and overall well-being.

    • Understanding Our Complex Relationship with FoodRecognize patterns of emotional or mindless eating, and aim for a healthier relationship with food by focusing on its nourishing properties.

Our relationship with food can be complex and often leads us to make choices that don't serve our health and wellbeing. We may use food as a reward, for comfort, or out of habit, without even realizing it. This can lead to overeating, guilt, and a cycle of unhealthy eating. It's important to recognize these patterns and understand that food should be fuel for our bodies, rather than a source of guilt or quick fixes. The speaker shared her personal experience of struggling with this, including feeling guilty about not liking certain healthy foods and mindlessly eating large quantities of unhealthy ones. She encourages us to be aware of our eating habits and to strive for a healthier relationship with food, focusing on the nourishment it provides rather than the emotional or instant gratification it can offer.

    • The cycle of guilt and unhealthy eatingFocus on being the best version of oneself, rather than labeling oneself as 'on' or 'off' a diet, to reduce guilt and make it easier to get back on track after setbacks.

The cycle of unhealthy eating and guilt can be a vicious cycle that makes it difficult to maintain a healthy lifestyle. The speaker shares her personal experience of feeling guilty when she's not strictly following her diet, leading to a psychological toll and potentially more unhealthy choices. She emphasizes that focusing on being the best version of oneself, rather than labeling oneself as "on" or "off" a diet, can help reduce guilt and make it easier to get back on track after setbacks. The speaker also acknowledges that gains and setbacks are inevitable, and the important thing is to learn from them and not let guilt consume energy and willpower. She encourages a more positive and compassionate approach to weight loss, recognizing that it's a journey with ups and downs, rather than a black-and-white, saint-and-sinner mentality.

    • Understanding the Root Causes of Guilt and Emotional EatingRecognize guilt triggers, practice mindfulness, and consider alternative coping mechanisms for emotions to break the cycle of emotional eating.

Recognizing and addressing the root causes of guilt, particularly when it comes to food and weight, is crucial in breaking the cycle of unhealthy habits. The speaker shares her personal experience of falling back into old habits and the guilt that follows, emphasizing the importance of recognizing these triggers and stopping them before they spiral out of control. She also highlights the observation of naturally slim people, who seem to lack the same level of guilt around food, and encourages the practice of mindfulness and self-awareness when it comes to emotional eating. The speaker acknowledges that breaking these habits is not an overnight process, but rather a gradual training of the mind and body. She encourages individuals to consider alternative coping mechanisms for emotions like anger, sadness, or loneliness, rather than turning to food for comfort. Overall, the key takeaway is to be aware of the role guilt plays in our relationship with food and weight, and to actively work on breaking the cycle of emotional eating through self-awareness and mindfulness.

    • The importance of accountability in maintaining healthy eating habitsA support system and accountability from others can help individuals stay on track with healthy eating habits, while recognizing and addressing secret eating and practicing forgiveness and self-control are crucial concepts in this journey.

Having accountability from others can be a crucial factor in maintaining healthy eating habits. The speaker shared her personal experience of living alone allowing her to make significant gains due to the lack of external influence. However, she acknowledged the danger of secret eating and the importance of recognizing and addressing it. The speaker also emphasized the role of a support system, such as friends or a group like Slimming World, in helping individuals stay on track and overcome feelings of guilt and self-doubt. Forgiveness and self-control were identified as important concepts in this journey, as individuals cannot control all aspects of their lives but can control what they consume. The speaker's experience of the power of this concept was highlighted through a story of a group member finding comfort and motivation in the idea that she could control her food choices amidst life's chaos.

    • Embrace imperfection for better well-beingRecognizing imperfection and practicing self-compassion can help reduce guilt and improve overall well-being. Avoiding the harmful effects of striving for perfection can lead to positive changes.

Allowing yourself to acknowledge imperfection and practicing self-compassion can help reduce guilt and create a healthier relationship with food and overall well-being. The speaker shared her personal experience of using food optimization as an anchor during emotional times, allowing her to maintain a sense of stability and avoid guilt. She also emphasized the importance of recognizing the harmful effects of striving for perfection and the potential ripple effect it can have in various aspects of life. By embracing imperfection and forgiving ourselves, we can unlock the potential to make positive changes and improve our overall well-being.

    • Embrace imperfections for growthRecognizing imperfections and focusing on growth through self-reflection and motivation can lead to a more beautiful and lighter life.

Focusing on the beauty and brilliance in imperfect situations can make life more beautiful and lighter. Letting go of guilt and striving for perfection can hinder progress. Instead, recognizing areas for improvement and making changes based on self-reflection can lead to growth. Knowing your "why" or motivation for making these changes is crucial for maintaining progress and moving forward. We can't change the past, but we do have the power to shape our future. So, take a deep look inward, identify your motivations, and embrace the learning opportunities that come with imperfections. Remember, it's called "food for thought" for a reason – it's meant to make us think critically about our food choices and our mindset. Stay tuned for more episodes, and don't hesitate to reach out to us on Instagram (@slimmingworldpodcast) or via email (slimmingworldpodcast@gmail.com). Every Monday, we'll release a new episode, and we'd love to hear your thoughts and experiences.

What Your Heart is Hungry For

Find out how what your heart is really hungry for. Chances are if you're stress eating, it's not about the food.

Petra Beumer, Founder of the Mindful Eating Institute, is a gentle warrior in the weight loss world where rules and discipline dominate.

She’s an expert in helping people discover what is really going on, especially those who struggle with weight and body issues and never want to diet again.

Bottomline: You can stop emotional eating with self-compassion and enjoy a much happier life.

“We don’t need more discipline, we need more compassion.”

    Yes, yes and yes.

Join Petra & Anne as they talk why self-compassion, self-care (beyond the usual bubble baths), making peace with food, developing emotional protection, and re-mothering (recovering from a narcissistic parent) are the delightful delicious secrets you may have been missing for lasting weight loss and self-love.

INCLUDES PRACTICE: A guided meditation for self-compassion  so short and nourishing you can enjoy every day.

    Quotes from the podcast

    Petra's words to live by

The soul starts suffering when we hold ourselves back.

Give yourself permission to be you.

A gentle warrior speaks her or his truth. They don’t put other people's needs first.

Say no when you mean no, say yes when you mean yes, and maybe when you mean maybe.

    Self-Compassion

We do not need more discipline. We need more nurturing.

Self-care is not just chocolate cake and bubble baths. It's creating a life you don't need to regularly escape from.

Self-care is really being in tune with your physical, emotional, and spiritual needs.

We need to figure out how we refuel.

    Know your triggers

Do a little internal emotional check-in: what's sitting well? what needs to be addressed? what am I struggling with?

A good inner barometer when you’ve sabotaged your own well-being is when you've said yes to something and you start feeling resentful.

If you're a million miles from your truth, your life really doesn't fit anymore, and circumstances have become toxic, I would highly recommend working with a therapist.

    Life lessons

When the suffering is so great, eventually letting go of the ledge will be a gift to yourself.

Sometimes we think these obstacles or these painful life experiences are so awful, but they're gate openers.

Lessons in life come as a whisper, a yell or two by four. I always say, Listen to the whispers. Don't wait for the two by four.

It's so important to identify what is no longer serving you.

    Re-mothering & relationships

This whole concept of re mothering and nurturing yourself, having your own back is so critical. Become the person you needed most.

So great, let’s repeat that: Become the person you needed most.

We need to fill ourselves up with ourselves first and then meet another grown-up who has done his or her healing.

    Eating & weight loss

(Anne) I always think of weight loss as a metaphor, that you're emerging, the sense of who you really want to be is coming out. You're not stuffing down your feelings with food.

People eat for different reasons, often stress boredom, loneliness, you name it. And unlike addictions, we do need to eat. We don't need to smoke or do drugs or drink alcohol, but we do need to eat it.

    Neuroplasticity

We can rewire ourselves, even people with traumatic experiences, we can learn to make ourselves feel safe. We don't need to eat or drink alcohol or numb. We have all that available in our own brains and our own hearts.

[00:03:00] Self sabotage- when you start feeling resentful, then you've maybe sabotaged your own wellbeing a little bit...but never beat yourself up for it.

[00:05:00] If your life doesn't fit anymore and circumstances have become toxic, having a mentor or therapist can help.

[00:07:00] When the universe gives messages, listen. Warning signs include being less interested in things, anger, migraines, mild symptoms of depression.

[00:09:00] For all my emotional eaters, I often ask: what is your heart hungry for?

[00:11:00] Using journaling to tune into yourself.  Identifying what no longer serves you. What do you want to let go of? Really write that down on a piece of paper.

[00:14:00] The concept of re-mothering and nurturing yourself. Having your own back is so critical. I often invite people in a meditation to imagine a loving wise, elder standing behind you, lovingly and gently touching your shoulder.

[00:17:00] Diets fail if we don't address the depth of our true needs underneath the surface.

[00:18:00] Talking about a woman who tried every diet on the market and still couldn't keep her weight off. How mindful self compassion helped.

[00:21:00]  The importance of rituals including gentle pausing and mindfulness.

[00:25:00] We can rewire ourselves, even people with traumatic experiences. We can learn to make ourselves feel safe.

[00:27:00] Talking about a night nurse - how she healed.

[00:30:00] It's okay to say, no. The importance of boundaries and self care.

[00:34:00] How you can learn to label your thinking like, Ooh, is this a negative thought? Is this serving me? No. And learn to replace it with the more beneficial thought.

[00:36:30] Petra leads a guided meditation on Self-Compassion, based on the work of self-compassion expert Kristen Neff
