DarkHorse Podcast with Greg Ellis and Bret Weinstein

    en-usAugust 17, 2020

    Podcast Summary

    • Accepting the current situation and finding common groundFocus on understanding different perspectives and broadening horizons for progress during uncertain times

Despite the volatile political climate, it's important to focus on finding positives and moving forward. Greg Ellis, a British-born actor, director, author, and new US citizen, shares his unique perspective on the US and its politics. He believes that accepting the current situation and finding common ground is crucial for progress. Ellis, who has lived in Los Angeles for 25 years, emphasizes the importance of understanding different perspectives and leaving nuance and doubt in the forefront during uncertain times. He also shares his observation that Americans might miss out on certain aspects of the US due to their natal experiences, making it essential to broaden our horizons and gain new perspectives.

    • Appreciating the Best and Striving for ImprovementCelebrate your country's strengths, acknowledge its flaws, and engage in open dialogue for improvement. Avoid labeling those with differing views as dishonorable.

It's important to appreciate and celebrate the best aspects of our own countries, while also acknowledging their flaws and striving for improvement. The speaker shares an anecdote about a tourist's observation of the quiet demeanor of Brits on the tube, and how it sparked a desire for them to express their personality. However, there is a concern that some people, like the agent at CAA, have an overly critical view of America and its human rights record, which is not only inaccurate but also dangerous for the American experiment. The speaker urges the importance of open dialogue and understanding between people with different political views, rather than labeling them as dishonorable based on their disagreements. It's crucial to have the courage to speak up and engage in meaningful conversations, even in the face of potential backlash or cancel culture.

    • Embrace diverse voices and perspectivesEngage in open dialogue to broaden understanding, welcome diverse voices, and focus on personal growth through self-evolution and embracing the unknown.

Despite our natural human tendency to dehumanize those with different perspectives, it is essential to engage in open and critical dialogue to find solutions and broaden our understanding. The fear and caricature views are unfortunately common, but an honest analysis shows that the American experiment is far closer to getting it right than starting over. As classical liberals, we should welcome diverse voices and perspectives, even if they challenge our beliefs. These conversations can be rewarding and enlightening, leading to personal growth and a deeper appreciation for the complexities of the world. As the poet says, "Blame passed to others is judgment passed on self." By focusing on self-evolution and embracing the unknown, we can embark on a lifelong adventure of learning and discovery.

    • Balancing Seriousness and Playfulness, Courage and Decency, and Protecting Our ConstitutionEmbrace a balance of seriousness and playfulness, fight for freedom of speech, and preserve the essence of our shared values in the Constitution

We should approach life with a balance of seriousness and playfulness, artistry, and authenticity. We've discussed the similarities in our perspectives and the importance of having courage and decency to help fix the world and tend to the fabric of our society. The Constitution, a prototype of a marvelous vision, spread freedom and democracy around the world. Now, it's essential to protect and fight for our freedom of speech, even if it's challenging. We should recognize the Constitution as a living testament to the ideals of its creators, with their blind spots and all. In essence, we need to be restless, eager to help, and committed to preserving the essence of our shared values.

    • Navigating Offense and Gender Roles in Modern SocietyRicky Gervais emphasizes personal responsibility in dealing with offense, while the loss of chivalry and toxic masculinity debate raises questions about gender roles and cancel culture's consequences. Open dialogue, empathy, and understanding are crucial in navigating these complex issues.

The ongoing conversation about freedom of speech, cancel culture, and toxic masculinity raises complex questions about the role of offense, violence, and chivalry in modern society. Ricky Gervais' perspective that offense is taken, not given, highlights the importance of personal responsibility in navigating potentially offensive content. The loss of chivalry and the toxic masculinity discourse have led to a debate about the future of gender roles and the potential consequences of canceling individuals without due process. The speaker's concern lies in the impact of these issues on interpersonal relationships and communication, particularly within the familial bond. The need for mental health awareness and addressing the inherent flaws in messaging during the COVID-19 pandemic is also emphasized. Overall, the conversation invites us to consider the importance of open dialogue, empathy, and understanding as we navigate the complexities of modern society.

    • Encouraging balanced gender rolesEncouraging communal gatherings, recognizing unique features of masculinity and femininity, and teaching boys to take risks and be strong contributes to a balanced society. Fathers play a crucial role in supporting growth into self-actualized young men. Avoid enforcing sameness and maintain a balance between the sexes.

Encouraging communal gatherings for both small and large groups, while recognizing and preserving the unique features of masculinity and femininity, is essential for a balanced society. Toxic masculinity and the belief that men are inherently bad are harmful and misguided. Boys need to be raised with the understanding that taking risks and being strong are necessary for their growth into self-actualized young men. Fathers play a crucial role in providing a supportive presence and teaching boys valuable life lessons. It's essential to maintain a balance between the sexes and avoid enforcing sameness. This approach does not diminish the importance of motherhood but rather emphasizes the unique contributions of both genders.

    • The importance of positive masculinity and father's role in shaping itRecognizing the importance of traditional roles and responsibilities can help create a world where men are motivated to behave honorably and contribute positively to relationships and communities.

The way we view masculinity and the role of fathers in shaping it matters greatly for the well-being of future generations. The removal of traditional boundaries and the demystification of sex have led men to view women as targets rather than partners, resulting in toxic masculinity and a dangerous environment for women. Instead, we should advocate for positive masculinity and the importance of fathers as role models to instill empathy, self-discipline, and boundary setting in boys. This not only benefits individuals but also contributes to a more harmonious and constructive society. The complexities of human behavior often make the purpose of certain traditions less obvious, but their elimination can lead to unintended harm. By recognizing the importance of traditional roles and responsibilities, we can create a world where men are motivated to behave honorably and contribute positively to their relationships and communities.

    • Consequences of absent fathers in children's livesThe absence of a father figure can negatively impact a child's development and well-being. Society should prioritize family unity and support two-parent households to provide children with a stable environment and diverse perspectives.

The absence of a biological father or mother in a child's life can have significant consequences for both the child and the father. This issue is particularly prevalent in the context of family law and the legal system, where many fathers are unfairly labeled as "deadbeat" or "absent," leading to the erasure of entire families and extended families. The importance of a two-parent household goes beyond aesthetics; it is functional, as children benefit from the exposure to diverse perspectives and the support of two families. The shift towards focusing on individual autonomy and reproductive rights has led us to overlook society's role in ensuring the well-being of children, who thrive best in a stable, two-parent household. The discussion surrounding family structures should emphasize the functional value of a two-parent household and the need for reforms in the legal system to support and encourage family unity.

    • Marriage and its impact on child outcomesThe nuclear family, though challenged, remains the most effective way to raise children with greater chances of success in life when males are certain of their offspring.

The institution of marriage is facing challenges and is perceived by some to be on the decline, as evidenced by decreasing marriage rates. This trend raises questions about the belief in the importance of marriage for better child outcomes. Some argue that the nuclear family is obsolete, but the nuclear family's emergence was due to economic realities and the need for certainty of paternity. In cultures where paternity is uncertain, alternative family structures exist. However, when males are certain of their offspring, they invest in their well-being, making a two-parent household the most effective way to raise children with greater chances of success in life. It's crucial for older generations to accept responsibility for passing down functional family structures to younger generations. Despite the challenges, the importance of strong family structures remains essential for positive child outcomes.

    • The devaluation of life in societyRemember that every life is valuable and cherish the present moment, focusing on emotional intelligence and self-reflection to appreciate life and support others.

Our society has reached a place where the value of life has been dehumanized, leading to a callous attitude towards suicide and the expendability of individuals. This devaluation stems from the commodification of life through markets, which assess and quantify human worth. We must remember that every life is lived forwards and remembered backwards, and it's essential to focus on the present moment and cherish the dash between birth and death. As noted in the poem "A Prince's Prayer," this dash represents the brief time we have to remember and honor our own existence. By recognizing the importance of emotional intelligence and self-reflection, we can learn to appreciate the value of every life and extend our presence to support those in need.

    • Exploring self-awareness and emotionsSelf-reflection and introspection help us understand emotions, connect with ourselves and others, and live more fully in the present moment.

Self-reflection and self-awareness are essential for deeper connections with ourselves and others. The speaker emphasizes the importance of knowing oneself, as stated by Socrates, and encourages exploring emotions and feelings to understand their roots. The speaker also reflects on the significance of acknowledging the finiteness of life and recognizing the implications of our mortality. Through introspection and mindfulness, we can live more fully in the present moment and become more responsive and responsible individuals. Additionally, the speaker suggests that engaging with philosophical questions and literature can deepen our understanding of ourselves and the world around us.

    • Exploring the paradox of life's significance and meaninglessness through poetryPoetry, with its constraints, can help us uncover deeper truths about life's paradoxes, pushing us to explore language further and find hidden meanings.

We all grapple with the search for meaning and understanding in our lives, which can sometimes lead to paradoxical thoughts and feelings. While accepting dualities, like periods of unhappiness followed by happiness, is manageable, the paradox of believing our lives are both significant and meaningless is a crisis. Poetry, with its constraints, can help us explore and discover deeper truths about important concepts. While some may prefer free verse for its lack of rules, others, like the speaker, find that proper constraints push them to explore language further and uncover hidden meanings. The speaker's poetry, though it may appear free verse, is actually highly regimented, designed to convey meaning and emotion. Ultimately, the pursuit of meaning, even if it means breaking the rules, is a valuable and worthwhile endeavor.

    • Exploring the depths of the mind through poetryPoetry offers a therapeutic tool for self-reflection, processing emotions, and discovering authenticity through introspection

Poetry, whether spoken aloud or read on the page, holds significant value in helping us understand and connect with our inner selves. Through the interpretation of lines and quotes, we can create meaning, challenge our beliefs, and embark on a journey of self-reflection. The act of writing and reciting poetry can serve as a therapeutic tool, helping us process emotions, confront past experiences, and ultimately, get to know ourselves better. The speaker's poem, "The Memory Shelf," is a testament to this idea, as it explores the depths of the mind and encourages introspection, leading to the discovery of authenticity and personal growth. Poetry, as an art form, offers a unique way to express and explore the complexities of the human experience.

    • Navigating Complexities with Philosophy and WisdomProduce adults who can become elders and contribute wisdom, address power mongers in politics, commit to philosophical rigor, consider Andrew Yang as a potential solution, take back the White House, restore the republic, believe in the impossible and work towards it together.

We need philosophers and intellectual minds to navigate the complexities of governance in these perplexing times. The speaker emphasizes the importance of producing adults who can become elders and contribute their wisdom to society. They also express concern about the current political landscape, where power mongers claim to champion the people but act against their interests in private. The speaker calls for a commitment to philosophical rigor and believes that Andrew Yang, with his political potential, could be part of the solution. They also suggest that the two major parties have given us unviable options and it's time for the people to take back the White House and restore the republic to functionality. The impossible may seem around the corner, but it's possible if we believe it is and work towards it together.

    • Divide in Society: Fear and CensorshipAmidst a societal divide, fear and censorship prevail, silencing scientists and others for expressing unpopular opinions. Media and corporations amplify this divide, but not all voices hold extreme views. Speak out in support of beliefs, take a risk, and demand change through voting.

We are currently facing a significant divide in society, where consensus on basic facts and values is lacking. This has led to a climate of fear and censorship, with scientists and others losing their jobs for expressing unpopular opinions. The media and corporations, driven by ratings and money, are amplifying this divide, creating a false narrative that a large portion of the population holds extreme views. However, upon closer examination, this fringe group may not be as large as it seems, with many people simply expressing beliefs they don't hold out of fear of being canceled. To make a difference, we need to take a risk and speak out in support of what we believe, even if it means facing potential backlash. This requires courage and a willingness to stand up for what is right, especially for the vulnerable members of society who are most affected by the current state of affairs. Ultimately, it's time for all of us to demand something different and to use our right to vote to bring about change. Silencing half of the population only perpetuates the problem, and it's crucial that everyone's voice is heard and respected.

    • Finding common ground in times of political turmoilDuring divisive times, prioritize unity by answering why first, trying new approaches, inclusivity, and moving from hateful to grateful.

During times of political turmoil and division, it's essential for individuals to come together, engage in open dialogue, and find common ground. The speaker emphasizes the importance of trying new approaches, even if they have been attempted before, and the value of inclusivity and bringing opposing sides together for productive conversations. The why question should be answered first, and the how will follow. Unity and finding a way to move from hateful to grateful are key to overcoming challenges and moving forward, regardless of the outcome. The speaker encourages everyone to wake up, get to work, and contribute to the effort towards unity and unification. The why motivates the how, and it's crucial to keep this in mind when seeking solutions to complex issues.

    • Emphasizing collaboration and making a difference through initiatives like Unity 2020Apple and other companies are making a difference by starting initiatives from the outside and collaborating to change perceptions. Upcoming events aim to bring people back together amidst COVID challenges.

Many companies, including Apple, start their initiatives from the outside and work their way in, aiming to make a difference and change perceptions. A current example is Unity 2020. The importance of collaboration and bringing people together to make a difference was emphasized. The speaker also mentioned his upcoming book, "The Respondent," which encourages a shift in perspective from "men are bad" to "men 2.0." He also announced two upcoming events: a "Gamer's Gateway" event on Saturday, featuring Clancy Brown and Hank Anderson, and a "Voices in My Head Jamboree Fundraiser" at 1 PM Pacific time, featuring various voice actors and a live simulcast. All proceeds from the latter event will go to Ayan Hirshir Ali's foundation. The speaker expressed that the challenges of COVID and lockdown have made it difficult for fans to come together, and these events aim to bring people back together.

    • Exploring the Business Side of Cartoons, Video Games, and AnimationJoin industry experts for discussions on creating and running a business in cartoons, video games, and animation. Interact with voice actors and watch improvised cartoon performances. Events recorded and available on YouTube, Twitter, and Twitch.

The entertainment industry, specifically in cartoons, video games, and animation, offers unique insights and opportunities for learning. Regular events will be held to discuss various aspects of creating and running a business in this field, featuring industry experts such as video game company owners, casting directors, and voice directors. The highlight of these events will be an interview with evolutionary biologist Brett Weinstein on August 16th. Additionally, there will be a virtual improvised cartoon performance where fans can interact with voice actors and see the people behind their favorite animated characters. These events will be recorded and available on multiple platforms, including YouTube, Twitter, and Twitch. Greg Ellis, the host, encourages everyone to join and engage with the voice over cartoon animation community, which is known for its brilliance and connectivity. Science Friction: The 226th Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

In this 226th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss a new breakthrough in plant genetics: polyploid potatoes and corn from Ohalo Genetics, which are claimed to double the harvest from individual plants. Beginning with a discussion of naturally occurring polyploidy in other species, including frogs, we analyze the discussion of Ohalo’s new products with an evolutionary lens. Is it possible that biotechnology can evade trade-offs, or is this utopian thinking in the corporate world? Why do so many mistakes of modernity come in the form of people accustomed to complicated systems, applying their knowledge to complex systems? Finally: does Terrence Howard (recently on Joe Rogan) have a predictive model, or is he just blowing smoke?

Anecdote in Science: The 224th Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

In this 224th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss animal behavior: the implications of an orangutan using a medicinal plant to treat a wound, and the one-off videos that we’ve all seen—of cats preventing toddlers from falling, of a beluga whale retrieving a woman’s phone. What does this say about the minds of these other organisms, and about us? Also: dog domestication, from wolves, but not from foxes. And: the New York Times publishes more insipid garbage about vaccine injury, Bret returns to the question of what safety means, and The Nation turns its back on its muckraking roots.

Never Alone: The 223rd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

Never Alone: The 223rd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

In this 223rd in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss science and religion, materialism and other ways of understanding our world. Can analysis and quantification explain everything? Can narrative, intuition, and creativity? All are or should be part of the scientific process; science is incomplete with only one mode. We also discuss models, how they fail, how difficult they are to assess, and what one recent climate model has to say about the role of air pollution in Earth’s temperature. Enlightenment values require that we use our freedom to inquire about all things that we are curious about. Also: happy Beltane!

Why Darwin was Right: The 222nd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

Why Darwin was Right: The 222nd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

In this 222nd in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss evolution, and how we know that it is true. We discuss the different kinds of beliefs that people have—beliefs that attempt to reconcile with reality, vs beliefs that reconcile with social standing and comfort. If your beliefs put you on the outs with your friends, do you change your beliefs, or your friends? Are you willing to give up the cocktail party for reality? We also discuss research published in 2000 and funded by Fauci’s NIAID, which demonstrated that it was possible to make chimeric coronaviruses, swapping the spike protein from one to a different species entirely. Finally: sex-biased gene expression, in which genes are expressed differently in the two sexes, in anatomical systems as varied as brain, kidneys, and liver.

    260 Little Droplets of Success

    260 Little Droplets of Success

    260 Little Droplets of Success

As we go through life we will notice small interactions, relationships that take time to nurture, and the importance of the small wins because these moments matter just as much as the big achievements. In time the droplets will accumulate and you will have a waterfall of success.

In this episode Sarah Elkins and her guest Karla Parra, an accomplished career coach and corporate speaker, discuss the importance of these moments to our story and our personal health.

    Highlights

    • Seeing the writing on the wall and still showing up energized and enthusiastic.
    • Discerning not dismissive of internal judgment.
    • You need to heal before you can help others, it’s on You.

    Quotes

“It’s much easier to change when you make the choice.”

“Nothing is wasted, every single opportunity is intentional, it’s up to us to see that and to take those lessons and what we’re learning into that next phase.”

“There’s so much that we just don’t see because we’re in it. We’re in the trees, we’re in the forest, we’re not seeing new ways of looking, new perspectives, new approaches, new possibilities, new solutions. Absolutely, I always say I have many coaches.”

    About Sarah

"Uncovering the right stories for the right audiences so executives, leaders, public speakers, and job seekers can clearly and actively demonstrate their character, values, and vision."

In my work with coaching clients, I guide people to improve their communication using storytelling as the foundation of our work together. What I’ve realized over years of coaching and podcasting is that the majority of people don’t realize the impact of the stories they share - on their internal messages, and on the people they’re sharing them with.

My work with leaders and people who aspire to be leaders follows a similar path to the interviews on my podcast, uncovering pivotal moments in their lives and learning how to share them to connect more authentically with others, to make their presentations and speaking more engaging, to reveal patterns that have kept them stuck or moved them forward, and to improve their relationships at work and at home.

The audiobook, Your Stories Don’t Define You, How You Tell Them Will is now available!

Included with your purchase are two bonus tracks, songs recorded by Sarah's band, Spare Change, in her living room in Montana.
