The hosts of the podcast had a challenging intro, making numerous mistakes and causing confusion with their discussion about a secret ingredient called "Gimini Gone Goulash." Despite their excitement to have Bimini Bon Boulash as a guest, they struggled to keep the focus on her and the dream menu, instead getting sidetracked by their own blunders. Listeners tuning in for Bimini's appearance might have been disappointed by the lengthy and disorganized introduction. However, the hosts' determination to correct their mistakes and move on shows their dedication to providing an enjoyable podcast experience. Despite their past errors, they continue to strive for excellence and invite listeners to join them as they explore the dream menu with Bimini Bon Boulash.

    • Bimini's Genie Outfit and VeganismBimini described her genie outfit as bejeweled and bejazzled with harem pants and nipple bells. She is a vegan and named Pamela Anderson and Lewis Hamilton as her favorite vegan influencers.

Bimini, a guest on the podcast, shared her imaginative description of her genie outfit and discussed her veganism. She envisioned her genie outfit to be covered in bejewels and bejazzled, with oversized harem pants and nipple bells. Bimini also revealed that she is a vegan and expressed her excitement about being on a food podcast. She mentioned Pamela Anderson and Lewis Hamilton as her top two favorite vegans, with Lewis Hamilton earning a bronze medal for his advocacy efforts. Bimini shared that she's not a fan of musicals, but she appreciated the punk energy and attitude in music. In Drag Race, she showcased her attitude instead of perfect vocals during musical challenges. Bimini also shared her preference for sparkling water and carrying her own metallic straw, which is always silver, not rose gold.

    • Discovering versatility in sustainabilityVersatile products contribute to sustainability and personal preferences, trends can influence choices.

Sustainability requires multi-functional products, just as metallic straws serve various purposes beyond just drinking sparkling water. The discussion also revealed a personal preference for lime over lemon, with the speaker admitting to being influenced by trends. The conversation veered off topic, touching on the speaker's fondness for a spiced carrot she had recently tried. Despite the tangent, the group found common ground in their appreciation for unique and well-prepared food experiences. Overall, the conversation showcased the importance of versatility in sustainability and the influence of personal preferences and trends in daily life.

    • Cooking Vegetables with Love and FlavorExperimenting with vegetables and cooking them with love and the right spices can transform them into delicious and satisfying dishes, bringing joy and appreciation for their versatility and potential.

The way we cook and perceive vegetables is changing, with chefs treating them as if they're meat and infusing them with amazing flavors. A prime example is cauliflower, which can be transformed into delicious vegan alternatives like wings. People are experimenting more with vegetables, and it's important to remember that they've been underappreciated for too long. A simple carrot, for instance, can taste incredible when cooked with love and the right spices. The analogy from The Walking Dead about how different elements are treated and transformed resonates with this idea. Even a seemingly basic food like a white crusty roll can bring immense joy and satisfaction when prepared and enjoyed correctly. So, let's appreciate the versatility and potential of vegetables and simple pleasures in life.

The speakers in this conversation express their fondness for a specific type of bun and reminisce about their childhood experiences associated with it. They plan to open a bakery, "Bimini Bumboulash," specializing in crusty white rolls. The idea is to focus on a limited menu and provide customers with consistent, high-quality food that brings back fond memories. The speakers believe that people are drawn to places that offer simple, familiar dishes, and that these establishments often evoke feelings of nostalgia. The conversation also touched on the importance of using a big pan when cooking pasta and the potential stress that small pans can cause. • Creating the Perfect Crispy Chip and Dream DrinkEnjoy crispy chips with Cajun seasoning, salt, and vegan garlic mayo or Sriracha. Try guessing if foods are vegan in a reality competition. Create unique experiences with conveyor belt donuts and rotating outfits. Sip on a frozen chili salted margarita for the perfect drink.

The perfect crispy chip is not burnt but just before charring, and it's best enjoyed with Cajun seasoning, salt, and two dips - vegan garlic mayo or Sriracha. Vegan garlic mayo is indistinguable from non-vegan mayo, and the food industry has made significant progress in providing more vegan options in recent years. A good idea for a TV show could be a reality competition where people guess if the food they're tasting is vegan or not. Bimini and James came up with several other creative ideas during their conversation, such as a conveyor belt donut show with vegan glazed donuts and rotating outfits. The dream drink for this meal is a frozen chili salted margarita, also known as a picante margarita.

The edginess of the lime and the uplifting effect of tequila contribute to the drink's popularity. The journey to discovering the perfect margarita involves trying various versions, some good and some bad, but ultimately leading to the discovery of a favorite.

    • Exploring humor and desserts, inspired by Phoebe in FriendsEmbrace both sweet and savory aspects of life, and allow yourself to indulge in desserts, no matter the circumstances

Our conversation revolved around the topic of humor and desserts, inspired by a quote from Phoebe in Friends. Phoebi's joke about offering a ladle to a guest has stuck with one person, shaping their comedy persona. During our discussion, we explored the idea of having room for dessert in life, even after a heavy meal, and the representation of different aspects of one's personality through dessert choices. They imagine it being served in a high-class gentleman's club, such as the Playboy Mansion, and reminisce about Pamela Anderson's influence on their life. The speaker shares a personal connection to Pamela Anderson, recalling how she was the first person they recognized as sexy growing up. This experience led the speaker to question their sexuality and later find inspiration in her for their drag performances. The speaker also shares a humorous memory of buying a Virgin Cola bottle modeled after Pamela Anderson, implying they had a crush on her. Overall, the conversation explores the speaker's nostalgic and personal connections to sticky toffee pudding and Pamela Anderson.

Or, what if you could enhance the taste of pizzas with a dose of Miracle-Gro? The imagination ran wild with such questions. Beyond beans -- getting started in vegan cookery

Beyond beans -- getting started in vegan cookery

Are you one of those people who would like to try vegan cooking but you just dont know how to get started?

On today's rabble radio, we'll help you out, as our contribution to rabble.ca's vegan challenge.

The vegan challenge is a good way for "veg-curious" people to try a vegan diet for a short time in a fun environment along with other rabble staff and readers. It's a way to encourage each other to go vegan -- or as close to it as possible -- for a week to help protect the environment, show compassion for animals and enjoy some wholesome nutritious and yummy food. Because going vegan is one of the best ways to contribute to climate justice and Earth Day. It can drastically reduce your carbon footprint, diminish air and water pollution and help reverse the destruction of ecosystems being used to produce feed for farm animals.

Today's guest is Karen Burson, an accomplished cook who has worked in a wide range of food and community development environments in her home city of Hamilton, Ontario. Among many other accomplishments, she was the founding chef of the Bread and Roses Cafe in Hamilton, which was a project of the Sky Dragon Community Development Cooperative. She's also a co-founder of the Good Food Box Network at Environment Hamilton. Currently her passion for healthy food is being put to work at St. Matthew's House, preparing healthy, heartwarming breakfasts and lunches at their Seniors Centre for an enthusiastic group of East Hamilton elders. She's off on self-isolation right now, though, like a lot of us so she had time to talk to us about how to get started cooking vegan food.

Deconstructing Dinner in our Schools I

Deconstructing Dinner in our Schools I

How do food issues make their way into our public schools? As Deconstructing Dinner's Jon Steinman recalls, "I remember graduating from high school not knowing the first thing about growing food and having very little idea how the food I consumed impacted the planet on which we live." With schools being the building blocks of our society and culture, how does our publicly-funded education system incorporate into curriculum this all important subject - food.

    Part I
Host Jon Steinman takes a ride with Nelson-based Earth Matters as they introduce their Food-to-Table program in local public schools. As a component of the countrywide One-Tonne Challenge, the program involved in-class presentations on how our food choices influence climate change, and saw students visit local grocery stores where food was discussed in-depth.

Fermenting Revolution / Soil Matters CSA I

Fermenting Revolution / Soil Matters CSA I

    Fermenting Revolution
How many people out there would love to hear that drinking beer could save the world. One might ask, to save the world from what, and author Christopher O'Brien would suggest from climate change, from pollution, from corporate control of our lives, from declining levels of happiness, from increasing levels of stress, from gender inequality, and from communities that have lost their sense of community. Fermenting Revolution" is the title of the book released just last year by British Columbia's New Society Publishers. As we often critically examine individual foods or agricultural commodities here on Deconstructing Dinner, beer is of course no different from any other food. It's principle ingredients consist of water, barley (or another grain), hops and yeast, all of which are extracted and produced in ways that can either respect or disrespect the earth. We learn of beer and its role in leading a revolution in small breweries around the world.

    Soil Matters CSA I
One of the greatest threats facing farmers today and hence facing our own food supply is the financial rewards found in the field of farming, rewards that are seemingly more often then not, in the negative digits. Many argue that food and agriculture should be removed from global trade regimes. One of the reasons for such an idea comes from a belief that farmers themselves should not have to bear the financial risks associated with such a volatile industry, and all people should equally share such risks as food is a need and not a desire. One alternative to the dominant food system is the model of Community Supported Agriculture, whereby a set number of people within a city or town become a member of a farm, and in doing so pay the farmers at the beginning of the season when farmers need the money most. Members who join are then guaranteed what is most often a weekly box of fresh produce. As many farmers know all too well how easily an entire crop can be lost due to weather, pests or unforeseen circumstances, members of a CSA share this risk with the farmer and on the other side can also share in the abundance. Just outside of Nelson, British Columbia, two intrepid farmers who only began farming a few years ago, have launched a CSA this year. Host Jon Steinman chose to become a member and document the process of creating a CSA and the potential for such a model to reconnect people with their food and provide farmers with a more secure source of income.

This marks the first of a periodic series that will document the creation and evolution of a CSA.
