Meanwhile, at Blue Nile, customers can design a unique engagement ring online and have it delivered to their door with a discount using the promo code "listen." Mint Mobile, on the other hand, goes against the trend of price hikes by lowering its unlimited plan price from $30 to $15 per month. In the entertainment sphere, the Off Menu podcast features guests discussing their favorite food choices, with this week's guest, Richard, revealing his fondness for broccoli. Despite this, the dream restaurant would still kick him out if broccoli was the secret ingredient they disliked. Overall, these examples showcase the ease and convenience of accessing essential services, purchasing unique items, and enjoying entertainment in today's digital age.

    • Humorous Discussion of Everyday Topics: Dining and FilmSpeakers share a unique sense of humor that finds joy in the unexpected, like discussing their eating habits and appreciating enthusiastic on-screen eating in films

The speakers in this conversation have a unique and humorous way of discussing everyday topics, such as dining experiences and film references. They share a sense of humor that involves pushing boundaries and finding joy in the unexpected. For instance, they discuss their eating habits, including drinking large amounts of water to prevent tooth staining and brushing their teeth immediately after coffee. They also appreciate scenes in films where characters really indulge in their food, finding it more memorable than those where actors are pacing themselves. The speakers also share a fondness for actors who eat enthusiastically on screen, like Patrick Swayze in "Roadhouse." Despite the seemingly mundane topics, their conversation is filled with energy and wit, making for an entertaining listen.

    • Imagining a Chicken Leg in a LunchboxPersonal experiences and imagination shape our perspectives, and finding solutions for carrying food items like chicken legs can involve creativity and adaptation.

The discussion revolved around imagining a chicken leg in a lunchbox and the various ways to prepare and carry it. The speaker shared his personal experience of eating chicken legs every day as a child, and the idea seemed unusual and even aggressive to some. Solutions were suggested, such as wrapping the chicken in tinfoil and keeping it separate from other lunch items. The conversation also touched upon favorite sandwich fillings from childhood and the challenges of dealing with food allergies and restrictions in a modern context. The speaker expressed a strong attachment to sweet foods and imagined his family being obsessed with honey if they were beekeepers. Overall, the conversation showcased the importance of imagination and personal experiences in shaping our perspectives and the complexities of adapting to changing circumstances.

    • Deception in youth and the power of subtextPeople in their youth may deceive to satisfy desires, and literature can convey deeper meanings that may not be immediately apparent.

The discussion revolves around the topic of deceit and the lengths people go to in their youth to satisfy their desires. The speaker shares an anecdote about sneaking money from their mother to buy records instead of using it for school lunches. They admit to feeling guilty about their actions, but also express a sense of relief that their mother may have suspected the truth but chose not to confront them. The conversation also touches upon the idea of hiding one's true intentions, as the speaker admits to buying records instead of the expected books at the school book fair. The discussion spirals into a reflection on the power of subtext and the ability of literature to convey deeper meanings that may not be immediately apparent to younger readers. The speaker also shares that they wrote a children's book about a book that refuses to be read due to its fear of being empty, which the adult listeners interpret as a reflection of the speaker's own fears and insecurities. Overall, the conversation highlights the complexities of deception and the role it plays in shaping our experiences and understanding of the world.

    • Embracing Challenges and Finding Joy in the UnexpectedEmbrace challenges, be confident, find joy in unexpected twists, appreciate the art of the double take, and master self-awareness.

Acceptance and tolerance are not the same thing. While Tor Freeman, the illustrator, was openly celebrated for her achievements, the speaker was met with indifference and even mockery for sharing his own experiences. However, he saw these challenges as opportunities to grow and encouraged others to do the same. The speaker also appreciated the art of the double take, a comedic technique that has fallen out of favor in modern media. He admired actors like David Tomlinson and Matthew Perry for mastering this skill, and believed that it requires a certain level of confidence and self-awareness. In essence, the speaker's message was to embrace challenges, be confident in one's abilities, and find joy in the unexpected twists and turns of life.

    • Creating a Unique Dining ExperienceConsider unconventional ideas to create a memorable dining experience, such as a Baywatch-themed restaurant with a lifeguard and themed meal montage.

Creating your dream restaurant involves considering various elements, even if it means dining on a diving board with a safety harness. The conversation explored the idea of dining alone or with others, the need for a lifeguard, and the possibility of a Baywatch-themed meal montage with the Hoff as the lifeguard. The music for the montage was discussed, with suggestions ranging from a keytar track to a Dean Learner rap. The conversation also touched upon the importance of having a dream lifeguard and the possibility of borrowing ideas from friends. Despite the seemingly absurd ideas, the focus remained on creating a unique and memorable dining experience.

The speaker expresses a strong preference for poppadoms over bread during curried meals, but finds the texture of warm tomatoes on poppadoms unwelcome. He enjoys breaking poppadoms into smaller pieces and applying dips to each segment. The speaker also reflects on his experience with the Crystal Maze game show, noting that alpha men who struggle to cooperate and communicate effectively often fail on the show. He finds it sad and moving to see alpha men out of their natural environment and unable to adapt to the ridiculous situations presented on the show. Overall, the speaker's preferences and reflections reveal a thoughtful and introspective personality.

    • Ed's Alpha Behavior and Unprofessional ConductEd's alpha behavior led to success but caused unease due to unprofessional conduct. Apologies may not always be necessary, but reversing from negative actions and repairing damage can be essential.

The discussion revolves around a shared experience in a team challenge, where one member, Ed, exhibited alpha behavior but also had moments of unprofessional conduct. The group included Ed, the speaker, Anish, and their partners. Ed was seen as an alpha in the specific context of the challenge, but not among true alphas. The group's guide, Mace, was someone they knew and tried to maintain character despite recognizing the group. Ed's behavior included punching a prop and causing a disturbance, which made the challenge more difficult. Despite this, Ed managed to obtain the crystal, leading to a feeling of unease about his behavior and its consequences. The speaker reflected on the experience, acknowledging that reversing from a tantrum and repairing damage can be challenging, and that apologizing is not always necessary as the other party may be at fault. If this had occurred on a TV show, the speaker believed the team would have kept him in check. The discussion also touched on the impact of being recorded and the pressure it brings.

    • The speaker's emotions and quirksRecognizing one's emotions and quirks is important for personal growth and understanding relationships.

The speaker's desire for justice, even in seemingly insignificant situations, can lead to strong emotions and unexpected actions. This was evident when the speaker felt frustrated that someone else wasn't recognized for their mistakes, leading him to express his anger and kill a fly. Additionally, the speaker's preferences and habits, such as his struggle with starters and his love for popcorn, were also discussed. The speaker's wife pointed out that he seemed out of place in a fancy restaurant, ordering multiple starters instead of a main course, and the speaker admitted to sometimes ordering popcorn instead of a starter due to his dislike of being full. The speaker's association with popcorn was explored, as he revealed that he eats a lot of it and even considers it a whole meal in itself. The speaker also shared that he finds the noise of others eating popcorn in a cinema stressful and prefers to control the sounds himself. Overall, the conversation touched on the speaker's emotions, habits, and preferences, highlighting the importance of recognizing one's own desires and quirks.

Overall, the discussion revealed the speaker's appreciation for traditional, unadulterated foods and their fondness for nostalgic experiences.

    • Small experiences can leave a big impressionSmall details can greatly enhance experiences, from exceptional chocolates to versatile paint. Personalized gifts create lasting memories.

Small experiences can leave a lasting impression, much like the exceptional chocolates from Thornton's shop. Although it may have looked unassuming from the outside, the quality of the chocolates transformed the experience, leaving a refined palate and a slight snobbery towards regular chocolate. Another key takeaway is the importance of attention to detail, as small details can greatly enhance a project or experience. This concept was exemplified by the new Rust Oleum Custom Spray 5 in 1, which offers control and versatility to tackle various surfaces and shapes. Lastly, the importance of thoughtful and personalized gifts was emphasized, as they can create lasting memories and remind us of cherished moments. Whether it's a digital picture frame filled with family photos or a favorite meal from a beloved restaurant, the thought and effort put into a gift can make all the difference.

James & Claudia Altucher Choose Themselves: Musings On Relationships, The Power of Vulnerability & Creating Success Doing What You Love

James & Claudia Altucher Choose Themselves: Musings On Relationships, The Power of Vulnerability & Creating Success Doing What You Love
I'm so intimidated. This week Julie and I are joined by the dynamic duo of the Choose Yourself era themselves, James and Claudia Altucher — a prolific couple changing the world with insights that are empowering millions to live more dynamic, authentic lives. When someone fires off a long list of occupations in conversation, my instinct tells me that person probably isn't great at any of them. James is not that guy. Abundant in talent. A true polymath with just the right amount of self-deprecation and pitch perfect comedic timing. Blogger, bestselling author, podcaster, public speaker, investor, entrepreneur, columnist, and humorist, he seemingly does it all. Oh yeah, he's also a nationally ranked chess master. James had made millions, lost millions and made millions again. Maybe he'll lose it again. I don't know. He’s started and run something like 20 companies. Then there's a slew of venture capital, hedge, angel and sundry other funds he ran. Maybe he still runs them. I don't know that either. In fact, I don't understand any of it. James' Altucher Confidential is one of the most widely read blogs on the internet, amassing over 15 million readers since its 2010 inception. The James Altucher Show debuted as the #1 podcast on all of iTunes last year. I think he's written 13 books. It could be 16. I can't keep track. He writes faster than I can read. My favorite is the Wall Street Journal Best Seller Choose Yourself. A primer for anyone seeking firmer control of destiny, it's a prescient and highly entertaining look at how new and unprecedented tools, technology and economic forces have suddenly emerged to make it possible for individuals to create art, careers, success, fulfillment and change the world without permission from the gatekeepers of yore. When you finish that book, then read The Power of No — also a Wall Street Journal Best Seller. Two things you need to know about this book: (1) it's really great; and (2) learning how and when to say no is, like, really important. Wait, there's a third thing: it was co-authored by James' wife Claudia. In many ways James' perfect match, the Argentinian-born Claudia is also a widely acclaimed multi-hyphenate. Writer, podcaster and yoga aficionado, she has written or co-written three books, including the recently released Become An Idea Machine. You can find her Yoga Podcast on iTunes and read her musings at ClaudiaYoga.com. But I don't know how much longer she can keep this up because any day now she's going to be named the new CEO of Twitter. Am I joking? Read this and you tell me. I had James on my podcast a while ago. Then I did his podcast. Then Julie did Claudia's podcast. They fell in love. I was already in love with James. The only thing? None of us had ever met in person. Until now. Wonder twin powers activate! I'm not sure whose podcast we did. We just hit record and started freestyling. I thought we were interviewing James and Claudia but now I think I have it all backwards. Enjoy! Rich
