    • WHO's Boundaries Overstepped in COVID-19 Response? The WHO's potential overreach in the COVID-19 response, as discussed on Tucker Carlson, emphasizes the importance of transparency and individual sovereignty, and highlights the need for public awareness and vigilance against potential infringements on individual freedoms.

During a discussion with Tucker Carlson, it was revealed that the World Health Organization (WHO) may have overstepped its boundaries in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic response. Tedros, the head of the WHO, argued that sovereignty can be overridden if agreed upon by governments, but this agreement supposedly happened without the public's awareness. This situation was compared to the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, where crucial information is hidden and opportunities to object are missed. However, it was pointed out that constitutional rights cannot be signed away, and governments do not have the authority to override individual sovereignty. The interview and subsequent discussions sparked a backlash from various groups, highlighting the importance of staying informed and vigilant against potential threats to individual freedoms. Despite the controversy, this situation underscores the need for transparency and clear communication in matters that significantly impact people's lives.

    • The Complexity of the Fight Against Perceived TyrannyMatt Taibbi emphasizes the importance of critical thinking and disagreement in the fight against perceived tyranny, acknowledging the potential involvement of real and inorganic actors in the conversation.

The ongoing discourse around the fight against perceived tyranny and the role of independent thinkers has become a complex issue, with real people and potentially inorganic actors contributing to the conversation. Matt Taibbi, in a discussion with Tucker Carlson, expressed concern about the sweeping out of principled and insightful individuals from institutions, leading to a "dream team" of dissenters. However, his use of the term "team" enraged some, who misconstrued it as an attempt to impose narrative discipline or exclude certain individuals. In reality, Taibbi values disagreement and believes it's crucial for understanding complex issues like the response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The conversation also touched upon the potential involvement of bots and sock puppets, adding another layer of complexity to the situation. Ultimately, it's essential to recognize that the fight against tyranny requires unity among those who can think critically and question authority, regardless of whether they're real people or not. The importance of this unity becomes even more significant as we face international challenges, such as the World Health Organization's potential involvement in tyrannical actions.

    • Effective communication in debatesBoth parties in a debate must strive for clarity and concision, and be open to refining their messages to ensure effective communication. Recognizing and addressing uncertainties and vulnerabilities in one's own understanding is essential for productive discussions and contributing to a larger movement.

Clarity and effective communication are crucial in understanding complex ideas and engaging in productive discussions. Both parties in a debate must make an effort to be clear and concise in their arguments, and be open to refining their messages to ensure they are effectively conveying their ideas. The inability to communicate clearly is a sign that one may not fully understand the subject matter, and it's important to recognize and address this vulnerability. Furthermore, disagreements and infighting are a natural part of dissident movements, but recognizing and addressing these issues is essential for the movement to grow and challenge established power structures. In essence, the ability to recognize and address uncertainties and vulnerabilities in one's own understanding is a valuable skill for anyone seeking to engage in meaningful discussions and contribute to a larger movement.

    • Effective communication and understanding in the face of disagreementsMaintaining respect and shared interest in truth, staying open-minded, and recognizing the complexity and importance of values like individual liberty, sovereignty, and informed consent are crucial for effective communication and discovering truth in live discussions.

Effective communication and understanding, even in the face of profound disagreements, is crucial for discovering truth. People like Dennis Rancourt and Nick Hudson, despite their differences, demonstrate this by maintaining respect and a shared interest in figuring out what is right. However, it's essential to remain open-minded and not become overly attached to our beliefs, as this can make it harder to back off when we're wrong. The complexity of live discussions, where getting it right is a priority, can often lead to unexpected outcomes and challenges. It's essential to understand that the job is more complex than it appears from the outside and that the trade-offs are significant. Additionally, the importance of values such as individual liberty, sovereignty, and informed consent should not be underestimated in the pursuit of truth.

    • The importance of constructive critique vs destructive criticismConstructive critique enhances ideas and knowledge, while destructive criticism harms progress and silences innovation.

Critique, while important, has been elevated at the expense of creation in various fields, leading to a culture of destructive criticism rather than constructive engagement. Nancy Rollman's observation of "woke mobs" resonates here, as they seem to prioritize destruction over creation and improvement. Criticism is easier than creation, and the shift towards critique in academia and social sciences has led to a lack of new ideas and solutions. However, healthy critique, which contributes to the betterment of ideas and the growth of knowledge, is valuable. It's essential to distinguish between exploitation competition, where critique improves ideas and makes us stronger, and interference competition, where criticism aims to harm or silence others, hindering progress and making it more likely for tyrants to succeed in their harmful agendas. In summary, constructive critique is essential, but it should not come at the expense of creation and the pursuit of new ideas and solutions.

    • Importance of genuine apologies and independent thinkingApologize honestly for mistakes, question conclusions, and stay true to beliefs despite societal pressure

Apologies should be genuine and based on actions, not demanded without justification. The speaker, who has faced criticism for their evolving stance on lockdowns, emphasizes the importance of not making false apologies and correcting errors honestly. They also reflect on past experiences where they were demonetized for expressing unpopular opinions and how they have learned to question conclusions that arrive fully formed and without scrutiny. The speaker encourages skepticism towards conclusions presented by authorities and the importance of keeping an open mind, even if it goes against societal norms. They emphasize the value of independent thinking and questioning the motivations behind demands for apologies. The speaker's experience highlights the importance of staying true to one's beliefs and not succumbing to social pressure or fear.

    • Overlooking alternative treatments and regretting early positionsThe focus on mRNA vaccines overshadows the potential of alternative treatments and past mistakes like underestimating mask effectiveness and short lockdowns could have significant benefits.

The focus on mRNA vaccines as the sole solution to the COVID-19 pandemic overlooks the safety and effectiveness of alternative treatments, such as repurposed drugs like ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine. The speakers also regret early positions on mask effectiveness and short, early lockdowns. They now believe that attempting to drive a new, virulent pathogen to extinction through brief, intense lockdowns accompanied by high-quality testing could potentially benefit humanity greatly. However, they do not trust current governments with this power and would oppose lockdowns from them. It's important to consider all perspectives and ideas, but be aware that some may have significant consequences.

    • Compromising Civil Liberties for the Greater GoodUnderstanding the necessity of compromising civil liberties in exceptional circumstances, while questioning authenticity of dissent and being aware of group dynamics.

While civil liberties are important, there are exceptional circumstances where compromising them can be justified for the greater good. Using the examples of active shooter situations and potential outbreaks of deadly diseases, the speaker argues that people generally understand the necessity of such compromises, even if they involve abridgements of civil liberties. However, the speaker also cautions against blindly following the crowd and questioning the authenticity of one's own dissent, as there may be external influences at play. The speaker reflects on their own experiences being a target of a "mob mentality" and shares Rene Girard's theory on scapegoating as an explanation for group dynamics. Lastly, the speaker expresses their criticism of Brett Weinstein and his views on genetic Jewish supremacy.

    • Online mobs and their verificationist natureOnline mobs can quickly spread false accusations and ignore disconfirming evidence, making careful thinking and fact-checking crucial for effective online discourse.

Online mobs can be particularly dangerous and difficult to dismantle due to their asynchronous nature and the lack of face-to-face interaction. This was highlighted in a conversation between Brett and someone else, where Brett was falsely accused of criticizing the belief that Jewish people are genetically superior. Despite Brett's clear denial of ever holding such a belief, the accusation spread rapidly in the online mob, revealing the mob's verificationist nature and their lack of interest in disconfirming evidence. This situation underscores the importance of careful thinking and fact-checking in online discourse, as well as the challenges of effectively engaging with and dismantling online mobs.

    • Discussing the complexity of understanding COVID-19 and the evolving nature of pandemic responsesEarly in the pandemic, some experts believed that extended outdoor time could have eradicated SARS-CoV-2, but they acknowledged inconsistencies in their positions and the importance of considering the full context of statements made during the pandemic.

The discussion highlights the complexity and evolving nature of understanding the COVID-19 pandemic. The speakers emphasized their early stance against lockdowns, particularly for outdoor spaces, based on their research. They believed that if humans could have agreed to stay outdoors for an extended period, SARS-CoV-2 could have been eradicated. However, they also acknowledged inconsistencies in their positions and the fact that they made statements in favor of lockdowns under certain circumstances. The interview in question was part of an effort to challenge the WHO's authority to impose global lockdowns. The speakers expressed frustration over the closure of outdoor spaces while children's playgrounds, schools, and workplaces were locked down. They believed that keeping people inside was a significant error. The discussion underscores the importance of considering the full context of statements made during the pandemic and the ongoing evolution of our understanding of the virus.

    • Focusing on the real enemy: Chronic noncommunicable diseasesUnderstanding the risks of using old or reused fats in commercial kitchens and recognizing the importance of different types of fats can help reduce the health risks associated with chronic noncommunicable diseases.

It's essential to focus on fighting the real enemy, which is the ongoing threat of chronic noncommunicable diseases, rather than tearing down those who are earnestly trying to address these issues. The discussion touched upon the risks of lipid oxidation products in fried foods, specifically the dangers of using old or reused fats for prolonged periods in commercial kitchens. The authors of the editorial mentioned have been researching this topic since the 1990s, and their concerns have gone unheeded, leading them to publish in a less conventional journal. The discussion also highlighted the importance of understanding the different types of fats, such as saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fats, and their distinct properties. Saturated fats are typically solid at room temperature and come from animal sources, while unsaturated fats, including monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, are liquid at room temperature and originate from plants. Trans fats do not occur naturally and should be avoided. It's crucial to recognize the significance of this research and the potential health risks associated with the use of old or reused fats in commercial food preparation. By focusing on the real enemy – chronic noncommunicable diseases – and working together to address these issues, we can make a positive impact on public health.

    • Types of Fats: Saturated, Unsaturated, and TransSaturated fats have no double bonds and are solid, unsaturated fats have one or more double bonds and are liquid, trans fats have an unusual arrangement of double bonds and are less healthy

Fats are made up of carbon chains, and the number and arrangement of double bonds in these chains determine whether a fat is saturated or unsaturated. Saturated fats, like butter and lard, have no double bonds and are solid at room temperature due to the stable arrangement of their molecules. Unsaturated fats, like olive oil and seed oils, have one or more double bonds, which cause the molecules to kink and be less tightly packed, making them more likely to be liquid at room temperature. Trans fats, which are created in the lab and have double bonds in an unusual arrangement, are relatively straight and can be packed together like saturated fats, but they have fewer hydrogens and no kinks, making them a less healthy option. Understanding the difference between these types of fats can help us make informed choices about the foods we consume.

    • The food industry's promotion of certain fats over natural ones is not based on sound scienceThe food industry's promotion of processed fats like margarine and seed oils over natural ones, such as butter, is driven by profit motives and marketing campaigns, leading to health issues like the creation of trans fats.

The food industry's promotion of certain fats, like margarine and Crisco, over natural fats like butter, is not based on sound science but rather on profit motives and marketing campaigns. The American Heart Association, which once promoted the use of seed oils, has a history of advocating for these industrial products. To make these plant-derived oils more appealing to consumers, they are hydrogenated to resemble butter's form and color. However, this hydrogenation process can lead to the creation of trans fats, which have been linked to numerous health issues. The industry's demonization of natural fats like butter and promotion of processed alternatives has had significant health consequences. It's essential to be skeptical of nutritional advice that seems too good to be true and to prioritize whole, natural foods in our diets.

    • Impact of oil types on toxic aldehyde production during fryingCorn oil and sunflower oil, rich in polyunsaturated fats, produce more toxic aldehydes than coconut oil and butter during frying. Monounsaturated fats are better than polyunsaturated fats due to their lower unsaturation levels.

The type and ratio of unsaturated fats in various oils significantly impact the production of toxic aldehydes during frying. The study compared corn oil, sunflower oil, coconut oil, and butter, revealing that corn oil and sunflower oil, rich in polyunsaturated fats, generate much higher levels of cytotoxic and genotoxic aldehydes than coconut oil and butter. Coconut oil, high in saturated fats, generates fewer toxic aldehydes during frying. The authors emphasized that all unsaturated fats are not equal, and monounsaturated fats are actually better than polyunsaturated fats due to their lower unsaturation levels. The study's findings challenge the common belief that all unsaturated fats are healthier alternatives to saturated fats and highlight the importance of considering the specific type and ratio of unsaturated fats in various oils.

    • Identifying the time dependence of toxic aldehydes in different oils during fryingDeep frying in industrial oils produces more harmful aldehydes than shallow frying in coconut oil or butter, but the production does not continue to increase indefinitely.

The paper discusses the sigmoidal time dependence of aldehyde concentrations in different oils during the frying process. Specifically, it identifies two classes of aldehydes: saturated and unsaturated. The authors note that the estimated aldehyde content from a small serving of French fries made in typical oils is similar to that from smoking a daily allocation of cigarettes. However, the production of these toxic aldehydes does not continue to increase indefinitely with time, but rather plateaus. This means that short-term shallow frying in coconut oil or butter produces a much smaller quantity of harmful aldehydes compared to deep frying in industrial standard oils like corn oil and sunflower oil. The authors express frustration that despite research on this topic since the 1990s, health recommendations continue to favor unsaturated fats over saturated fats.

    • Industry Influence on Scientific Research and Expert AdviceIndustry manipulation of academic institutions can lead to misinformation, as seen in the debate around oils and fats, leaving individuals uncertain about whom to trust for health advice. Independent research is crucial to challenge industry-backed information.

The scientific literature and expert advice may not always be trustworthy due to financial influences and biases. The speaker argues that industries can manipulate academic institutions to produce results favoring their products, leading to misinformation. This phenomenon is particularly relevant to the debate around oils and fats. For instance, the promotion of margarine over butter or canola oil over margarine is an example of such manipulation. The speaker questions who to trust when medical professionals are influenced by industry, leaving individuals uncertain about whom to seek advice from. The speaker also mentions the example of trans fats, which were once considered healthy but later found to be harmful. The situation raises concerns about accountability and the need for independent research to challenge industry-backed information. The speaker concludes by expressing concern that people are being sold unhealthy products under the guise of health and wellness.

    • The Surprising Link Between Toxic Lab Sludge and Costco Beauty SpongesCostco sells beauty sponges, which are essentially open-cell lab sludge, under various brands like Hershey's and Peeps, raising questions about the connection between these brands and the sponges' origins.

Our discussion touched on the unexpected connection between toxic lab sludge and beauty sponges, which were found at Costco. These sponges, brought to us by brands like Hershey's and Peeps, were discovered in the drugstore section of the store during the speaker's anthropological exploration. The speaker expressed confusion over the connection between these brands and beauty sponges, which are essentially open-cell lab sludge used for applying or removing makeup. The discussion also highlighted the dystopian aspect of wandering through aisles filled with non-food items and the contrasting appeal of the fancy cheese aisle. Despite the oddities found, it was acknowledged that Costco has some benefits, such as offering higher quality products and better labor practices compared to other big box stores. The conversation also touched on the importance of limiting lies, especially to tyrants.

    • Reflecting on the Current State of ScarcityDespite scarcity, focus on community, self-care, and continuing to learn and engage with content.

The world is experiencing a state of uncertainty and scarcity, as evidenced by empty shelves in stores like Ross Dress for Less. This liquidation is happening at a time when items are becoming increasingly hard to come by, even for common and unwanted items. The speaker reflects on the past and expresses a sense of loss for the way things used to be. Despite the challenges, they encourage viewers to join them for a Q&A session and to continue engaging with their content on Rumble and Locals. They also remind viewers to take care of their loved ones, eat well, and spend time outside. The speaker also announces that they will be back on Saturday with new content. Overall, the message conveys a sense of resilience and the importance of community and self-care during difficult times.

Science Friction: The 226th Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

In this 226th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss a new breakthrough in plant genetics: polyploid potatoes and corn from Ohalo Genetics, which are claimed to double the harvest from individual plants. Beginning with a discussion of naturally occurring polyploidy in other species, including frogs, we analyze the discussion of Ohalo’s new products with an evolutionary lens. Is it possible that biotechnology can evade trade-offs, or is this utopian thinking in the corporate world? Why do so many mistakes of modernity come in the form of people accustomed to complicated systems, applying their knowledge to complex systems? Finally: does Terrence Howard (recently on Joe Rogan) have a predictive model, or is he just blowing smoke?

Anecdote in Science: The 224th Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

Anecdote in Science: The 224th Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

In this 224th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss animal behavior: the implications of an orangutan using a medicinal plant to treat a wound, and the one-off videos that we’ve all seen—of cats preventing toddlers from falling, of a beluga whale retrieving a woman’s phone. What does this say about the minds of these other organisms, and about us? Also: dog domestication, from wolves, but not from foxes. And: the New York Times publishes more insipid garbage about vaccine injury, Bret returns to the question of what safety means, and The Nation turns its back on its muckraking roots.

Never Alone: The 223rd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

In this 223rd in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss science and religion, materialism and other ways of understanding our world. Can analysis and quantification explain everything? Can narrative, intuition, and creativity? All are or should be part of the scientific process; science is incomplete with only one mode. We also discuss models, how they fail, how difficult they are to assess, and what one recent climate model has to say about the role of air pollution in Earth’s temperature. Enlightenment values require that we use our freedom to inquire about all things that we are curious about. Also: happy Beltane!

Why Darwin was Right: The 222nd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

Why Darwin was Right: The 222nd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

In this 222nd in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss evolution, and how we know that it is true. We discuss the different kinds of beliefs that people have—beliefs that attempt to reconcile with reality, vs beliefs that reconcile with social standing and comfort. If your beliefs put you on the outs with your friends, do you change your beliefs, or your friends? Are you willing to give up the cocktail party for reality? We also discuss research published in 2000 and funded by Fauci’s NIAID, which demonstrated that it was possible to make chimeric coronaviruses, swapping the spike protein from one to a different species entirely. Finally: sex-biased gene expression, in which genes are expressed differently in the two sexes, in anatomical systems as varied as brain, kidneys, and liver.

How Monkeypox Went From Containable to Crisis

In mid-June, cases of monkeypox were in the double digits in the United States. There were drug treatments and vaccines against it. There didn’t seem to be any reason for alarm.

But in the weeks since, the virus has spread rapidly across the country, with some local and state officials declaring public health emergencies.

Which country has the world's best healthcare system?

Which country has the world's best healthcare system?
I got my start as a blogger. But more specifically, I got my start as a health policy blogger. My first piece of writing I remember people really caring about was a series called “The Health of Nations,” in which I checked out books from college library, downloaded international reports, and profiled the world’s leading health systems. It was crude stuff, but it taught me a lot. The way we do health care isn’t the only way to do health care. It’s not the best way, or the second best, or the third. Ezekiel Emanuel is a bioethicist, oncologist, and co-director of the University of Pennsylvania’s Health Transformation Institute. He was a top health policy advisor in the Obama administration, he’s a senior fellow at the Center for American progress, he makes his own artisanal chocolate, and he’s got a new book — Which Country Has the World’s Best Healthcare? — where he goes into more detail than I ever did, or could, to profile other health systems and rank them against our own. So, yes, this is a conversation about which country has the world’s best health system. But it’s also about how innovation in health care actually works, whether there’s any evidence private insurers add actual value, whether health care is the best investment to make in improving health (spoiler: no), how do you improve a health system when half of the political system will fight like hell against those improvements, and much more. Emanuel has also been doing a lot of work on coronavirus policy, and so we spend some time there, discussing the question that’ tormenting me now: Are we simply giving up that fight? And is there even a politically viable option to giving up, given how much time the government has wasted and how exhausted the public is?
