54 | The Seven Volcanic Summit Infinity Loops w/ Jason Hardrath

This podcast is no stranger to traumatic life altering accidents. It is easy to let these events cripple us, and hard to allow them to transform us. Jason Hardrath, PE teacher from Klamath Fall, OR and competitive endurance athlete who’d just qualified for the Ironman 70.3 World Championships. Found himself ejected from a moving vehicle. He suffered a broken shoulder, collapsed lung, torn ACL and multiple internal injuries. Its fair to say the Jason is lucky to be alive. Just Three years later, Jason became the first person ever to establish 100 FKTs and currently sits with 121 under his belt. Now he is chasing a new objective: the Seven Volcanic Summits done in a style dreamed up by renowned climber Chad Kellogg called “The Infinity Loop”, which involves two summits and circumventing the entire base of each of the world's tallest volcanoes.

In our conversation we also discuss Jason’s predisposition for H.A.P.E and how it affects his safety in high altitude environments, his goals, and the partners who choose to join him on his dream of establishing the Seven Volcanic Summit Infinity Loops.

View all show notes and timestamps on the KoopCast website.

    Episode overview:

Jeff Rothschild is a registered dietician, PhD, and research associate at Sports Performance Research Institute New Zealand.

Ever been curious about the science behind fueling your athletic performance? Look no further, as we are joined by Jeff Rothschild, a registered dietitian and researcher, who is here to break down the complex concept of carbohydrate periodization for trail and ultra runners. We dissect the misunderstood principle of "fueling for the work required" and dive into how an athlete can manipulate their carbohydrate intake during periods of high intensity or high training loads. Jeff's innovative research on this topic unveils an index for quantifying carbohydrate periodization - a game-changer for athletes aiming to enhance their performance through optimized nutrition.

    Episode highlights:

(17:32) Calculating periodization: any metric of training load, daily carbohydrate intake in g/kg, correlation coefficient, reasons for including range and monotony

(36:24) How to track your carbohydrate periodization: track your diet, consistent measures of training load, TSS or CR100, TSS is best, use the spreadsheet in the description, help from Jeff’s app

(43:38) Use cases for carb periodization: predicted TSS for your upcoming workout, adjusting carbohydrate intake based on each day, you can consume more after the workout if the true TSS was higher than expected, examples

On today’s podcast we have Zach Bitter. Zach is an ultramarathon athlete, coach and host of the Human Performance Outliers podcast. He has broken both the World and American Records in running 100 miles, that's 160km, in 11 hours, 19 minutes and 13 seconds!

What I love about this conversation is the difference between Zach and I, and how much I learned from him. As many of you know, I absolutely love endurance running. I love it for the experience, the adventure, the uncertainty and the unknown. And yes, Zach certainly runs for the experience, but to be a world record holder in running 100 miles on the track, it is necessary to remove as much as you can in relation to this uncertainty and the unknown. There is a lot of great advice right down to specificity in the conversation that will help with increasing your performance, and there is a lot we can learn from Zach in terms of commitment. It took Zach 6 years of dedication to achieve the world record, and we go deep on what supported him in staying on the path of greatness during those years.

Please enjoy this conversation with Zach.

Daniel Lieberman on Evolution and Exercise: The Science of Human Endurace

Daniel Lieberman on Evolution and Exercise: The Science of Human Endurace

Human beings are distinctly weird. We live for a very long time after we stop reproducing, move completely differently than all of our closest relatives, lack the power of chimpanzees and other primates but completely outdo most other terrestrial mammals in a contest of endurance. If we think about bodies as hypotheses about the stable features of their ancestral environments, what do the features of our unusual physiology say about what humans ARE, where we come from, the details of our origin story as a profoundly successful species? And what can we learn by telescoping that story forward to explain some of the most persistent puzzles and paradoxes about our health, the way we age, our need for physical exercise, and our nearly ubiquitous aversion to habits that are good for us?

Welcome to COMPLEXITY, the official podcast of the Santa Fe Institute. I’m your host, Michael Garfield, and every other week we’ll bring you with us for far-ranging conversations with our worldwide network of rigorous researchers developing new frameworks to explain the deepest mysteries of the universe.

This week, we sprint into the paleoanthropology, biomechanics, and physiology of exercise with Harvard evolutionary biologist Daniel Lieberman, author of several books including Exercised, The Story of the Human Body, and The Evolution of the Human Head. In our rapid-fire discussion we explore how millions of years as hunter-gatherers equipped hominids with a unique package of adaptations for endurance running, why exercise is so good for us but so generally undesirable, and how physical activity in old age helped shape us into the strongly intergenerational social apes we are today.

Running for Mental Health | Georgie Wilson on Ellen Ave

She had mental health stuff going on. Running helped.

Others had mental health stuff going on. She helped them through running. Full circle, right?

She's also a little hype ball of positivity and energy. Especially after the first 10 minutes once she gets comfortable! 😂

Join the chat with Georgie and I to talk RUNNING. She recently fell down the rabbit hole of running and found herself apart of a community with new friends full of support, motivation, and encouragement.

Since then, she's repped out a couple half marathons, completed a Mental Health May run challenge that sparked many more people opening up about their mental health, is prepping for a marathon, and started the MEGARUN Auckland community.

We chat her journey to start running, her Outward Bound and Spirit of Adventure experiences, running half marathons, starting the MEGARUN community in Auckland and how it came about, her recent Mental Health May running challenge, digging out the pain cave and chasing new results, and being the one-girl hypeman and ball of positivity she is.

Her first ever podcast but she smashed it and we're so proud! Woo!
