    I started working with Katie Key at the end of November and she is a rockstar. I could tell that Katie was serious about wanting to make a change and begin to gain control of her life through a needed health journey. And boy, did she!
     
     Katie not only lost weight, but a lot of inches even during the holiday season. We worked through eating healthy, protein, and communication with family and getting their support. And we discussed the importance of not only cardio exercise, but strength training to redistribute your body weight.
     
     Her confidence has soared because she knows she did it herself without relying on crazy diets or pills. It was all her and her good choices.  She encourages everyone to invest in yourself because you deserve it and SO DO I!

    My first key to success has always been "Consistency is Key". But if I were to have another it would be that in order to know where you are going, you have to know where you are starting. And in order to do that we need to be AWARE. To have AWARENESS of everything around us.

    Once we are able to become aware of where our time is spent, what we are eating, what we aren't doing in order to be healthier, then it is much easier to develop a good plan with actionable and achievable goals.

    And that is what Jennifer has able to do since our Midlife in Motion Kickstarter Call back in October. And she has gained so much clarity on her direction and what she wants as she continues to reach for even bigger goals.

    Having A 50th BIRTHDAY In 2023? | Some INSIGHT FOR LIVING And No Longer Needing VALIDATION With Rachel Fagerberg

    HAPPY 50TH BIRTHDAY if you are turning this magical age in 2023! I don't care if you dread it, haven't planned for it, or are excited for this next chapter - it is coming no matter what you say or feel. So you need to be ready.

    My friend Rachel Fagerberg, who herself is turning fifty, is with me today to contemplate that number, that age, how she is preparing, and what turning 50 means to her. 

    There is something about turning fifty that makes us all reflective and with a tendency to do some of our own personal development. I did that. And Rachel is doing that. 

    A few of the insights from this conversation:

    1.     Turning 50 is a moment for pause to reflect and look back at all of the phases of your life, those different journeys and to  realize that not having your life together 100% is pretty normal.

    2.     Fifty is definitely a time of personal growth. It’s the time you finally learn to set boundaries with intent so in order to be the best version of you without any regrets

    3.     Fifty is a time of mindset change and shifting priorities. For Rachel, she is I making herself a priority and realizing that she not going to please everyone, so she is giving herself permission to stop trying.

    This is also to time to really start to evaluate your overall health. We all want to be here long after we turn 50, so we talk about the health coaching that she and I did, what she learned, what she implemented, and the results that she has seen.

    I hate to keep harping on resolutions and health resolutions in general, but I've been where you are. I'm made so many declarations at midnight on the 31st, only to give up  by now. 

    I was going to:

    ·       Workout or Exercise More
    ·       Eat less and focus on better nutrition
    ·       Drink less alcohol
    ·       Drink more water
    ·       Get more sleep

    To be so fired up in the beginning and doing all the needed preparation to keep those promises to yourself. But maybe you are like every other normal person and are struggling right about now.

    What did you miss? Well I think you missed this very important item. Clarity. I know that when I've failed at similar things that I have forgotten to do this very important thing. The truth is, how do you know where you are going if you don't know where you are starting?

    There are a lot of things we try to train ourselves to do at the beginning of a new year. We write out lists of resolutions about them. I am going to quit drinking. I am going to get more sleep. I am going to call my mom more. I am going to practice more self-care. 

    Unfortunately, these things are not as easy as training yourself to write or type the new year. Resolutions are quick fixes, quick answers to “what is this next year going to look like?” And like most quick fixes, they usually don’t hold.

    What you need is to set a goal. Whether that is for your career, your love life, or your health.  Setting goals isn’t an either-or or all or nothing.

    OK - I'm beating this resolution thing to within an inch of it's life. But now is the time to recognize that resolutions suck. Sorry, not sorry. Anyway, soon we'll only be talking about goals. That is a good thing.

It's all about mindset, having a desire, making the choice, and then being committed to it.

    Hey midlife friend! Christmas is over. 2022 is ALMOST over. 2023 is staring you in the face. And you have big plans that you will start January 1st. You are going to lose weight, drink water, eat better, get lots of sleep, and workout - every day - starting January 1st.

    Has this plan ever worked more than a few days to a week for you? What are you waiting for? Why not start TODAY instead of January 1st?     Are you feeling pressure to make this Christmas PERFECT for everyone else? Do you struggle with perfectionism on the whole?  Striving for perfection can be a terrible thing. It can make you highly critical of yourself and everyone around you. It forces you to have unrealistic standards, causes you to focus only on results and feeling depressed when those results don’t materialize. 

    What is wrong with just doing your best and finding satisfaction in all of the things? Satisfaction leads to happiness. It gives you a sense of achievement. It makes you feel that life is good. Being satisfied is being content. And when you’ve done your best it simply means that all things considered, there are sufficient benefits and that you are driving continued improvement. 

    My thought is that you need to enjoy life. Enjoy the ride. Enjoy the little things. Enjoy the wins. And don’t let some fake sense of perfection steal it all away from you.

    As we age we become much more aware of regrets of our past and fear regrets that we may have in the future. While we can't fix the regrets of our past, except with the understanding that we were making the best decisions we could in the moment with the information we had, we can definitely focus on the things we may have regrets about later in life.

    In order to combat these regrets, I've got three things you can start to do NOW to ease those regrets of the future. Start today and be aware of these things. Be present, Be curious, and take care of your health.

    Midlife Is Trending | Community Support And Our Role In The "Over 50" Brand Marketing Strategy | Empty Quester Founder, Donna Korren

    According to AARP, Americans age 50 and up contribute so much to the U.S. economy that they’d constitute the world’s third-largest economy if they were counted as their own country. This comes as no surprise to Donna Korren, former magazine executive, Ted X speaker, writer, and brand collaborator.

    Donna is with me to talk about how we as an "Over 50" demographic hold all of the cards when it comes to purchasing power, but may not realize it. We are all too worried about how to navigate this next chapter.

    She encourages us to embrace our empty nests and become an emptyquester, someone who decides to get on with getting on and do the work to find out who they are NOW and start working toward something new. And what better way to do that than in community with other like-minded women.

    And with our numbers, comes great power - she reports that the 50+ demographic is responsible for 56 cents of every dollar spent - 40% of gross domestic product. And brands are taking notice. Gone are the days of being told who we are by advertising and the media, it is time to self-represent and tell them who we are instead.

    Every single woman that I have coached and am coaching knows that I am going to mention resistance training and they know they should be doing it, but just don't - for no particular reason. But this type of strength training is so crucial to us as we age and I am going through five benefits you will get if you add it to your workout plan.

    Let's just say that you can slow down and even reverse sarcopenia - muscle loss, you can build bone and avoid Osteoporosis, it will help your flexibility, balance, and coordination, helps prevent chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease, and helps your general overall health.

    I encourage you to start your 2023 by adding resistance training, lifting weights, and strength training into your overall workout plan. You don't have to love it or even like it when you start, but when you begin to gain strength, you'll want to keep going.

    How is your self-talk? Do you look in the mirror and wonder where that 25 year old went? Do you only see your gray hair, wrinkles, and extra weight? Let me break it to you gently, you will never be 25 again. That ship has sailed. What you DO need to be focusing on is not Anti-Aging, but Aging Well.

    And part of aging well is doing the things you know will keep you in top shape mentally and physically.  A consistent exercise routine is one of those. And being consistent means making that CHOICE every day to put your health first. Making that choice once is easy, but making it day after day is hard. But you can do it because you absolutely deserve to feel your very best every day as you age.

    Don't Know The Right Questions? All The Facts About Hormone Replacement Therapy And Living Healthier In Menopause With Dr. Kelly Casperson

    A big welcome back to the podcast to Dr. Kelly Casperson. Kelly is a urologist with advanced training in pelvic medicine and surgery, but most important for us, she is working hard to normalize how we talk about and approach sex, because let’s face it, a lot of us were left in the dark on the subject as we grew up.

    She has authored a book with the same title as her podcast "You Are Not Broken" to bring awareness to some real basic and fundamental facts that we may not know about sex itself, sexual desire, menopause and hormone replacement therapy, and life around our sex lives in general. She calls it her advocacy work.

    A few takeaways from today's conversation:

    Two things all women 50+ should know about their bodies that they may not know: 

    1. The clitoris is where your orgasm comes from. Not the Penis in Vagina or PIV. The clitoris is the target.

    2. Everything in your life affects your sex life. Your sex life is not in a bubble. The way you live your life affects your sex life. If you are sleeping poorly, if your health is bad, if your thoughts are negative, If your relationship isn’t doing well, if you think the dishes in the sink getting done is more important than sex – all these things will affect your sex life.


    Other Takeaways:

    3. It’s important to ask yourself – who do you want to be when you are 74? You need to prioritize sleep and exercise and eating right because if you want to keep feeling great long into the future you’ve got to do the things that 74 year old will be grateful for the 50 year old put into thought and into action. 

     4. A woman’s desire doesn’t necessarily come before sex. It may come before, it may come during and it may not happen until after. Wow that was great. I forgot how great it is, can you remind me how great that is?

     5. Menopause is normal if you are blessed enough to live that long – it’s going to happen. And it’s important to communicate with your partner about what you learn about menopause and explain what you are going through. Otherwise they are just guessing themselves. And that never goes well.
