Long-Lost Play for Voices about Self Talk

Long-Lost Play for Voices about Self Talk

Max and Kelley discuss a long-lost performance piece Max wrote over twenty-five years ago when we first moved to Atlanta.  The piece examines our inner voice and how important it is to give grace to ourselves even if things are not going as well as we hoped.  He found it recently and wanted to perform it for our podcast audience for the first time.

We also talked about our history of doing radio theater, including for a public radio station, WLRN  in Miami, where we performed on the Pandamonium Midnight Uprising in the early 1990s.  Kelley also talks about other podcasts that are outgrowths of radio theater, including Sarah Wayne Callies' production of Aftershocka fast-paced thriller about a massive earthquake that destroys the West Coast, causing a mysterious island to rise up from the Pacific and how creating it as a traditional show would be expensive. Still, as a podcast, you let the listeners use their imagination. We also talk about our ventures into doing a production of Sophia's Carol as a podcast dramedy holiday production.

    "Get-It-Doneness" & Self Talk

    "Get-It-Doneness" & Self Talk

Negative self-talk and disciplined self-talk are two contrasting ways in which individuals communicate with themselves, affecting their mindset and behavior.

    1. Negative Self-Talk: This involves critical and pessimistic inner dialogue. People engaging in negative self-talk often focus on their shortcomings, mistakes, and weaknesses. It can erode self-esteem and hinder personal growth.

    2. Disciplined Self-Talk: Disciplined self-talk is a constructive form of inner dialogue. It involves setting goals, maintaining focus, and providing motivation. It helps individuals stay on track and make progress in their pursuits.

To foster disciplined self-talk, consider techniques like positive affirmations, setting SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound), and practicing mindfulness. This shift in self-talk can lead to more productive and positive outcomes in various aspects of life

53: Anxiety: How to help your teen with anxiety, an interview with Renee Mill, Senior Clinical Psychologist.

53: Anxiety: How to help your teen with anxiety, an interview with Renee Mill, Senior Clinical Psychologist.

For most of our episodes I research a topic and discuss it with Susie. We covered anxiety some time ago in that format, and it's continued to be one of our most popular downloads. So, when I was given the opportunity to interview a specialist in the area, I jumped at the chance.  In this interview, Renee Mill talks about the model she uses to treat patients, called the Ebb Flow model. #

    We also covered:

    • How important it is to avoid labelling ourselves and how just talking about anxiety, and understanding why you have it, won't necessarily fix it.
    • How important it is to treat symptoms of anxiety as soon as possible, to unwire the track of thinking before it becomes entrenched.
    • How our belief about an event will be one of the key reasons why we react the way we do.
    • How to prepare our kids for their transition to a new school, and why it's so important to calm our own nerves about it and tune into the individual child and what they might need.
    • How 'collaborative parenting', being a calm container, can really help our teens.
    • How important it is to be clear about our values and beliefs with our teens.
    • How important it is to be authentic with our kids.
    • How choose to do things that aren't really important to us, but are things others are doing, set us up for failure.
    • How articulating feelings can be very challenging for teens, and having a 'feelings' vocabulary can really support them.

I loved Renee's point about having a list of emotions, and found this worksheet that we parents can use to try and identify our feelings, and those of our teens. https://www.therapistaid.com/worksheets/list-of-emotions

    Note to All Listeners:
Ghosting is defined as: The practice of ending a personal relationship with someone by suddenly and without explanation withdrawing from all communication (Oxford Languages).
When you leave an abusive situation without saying "goodbye," it's not ghosting, it's "self-protection." When you quietly exit a relationship after a boundary has been violated, it's not ghosting, it's "self-respect."

Negative Self-Talk: The Trials and Tribulations

Negative Self-Talk: The Trials and Tribulations

Negative self-talk is something that permeates many of us and can be pesky to deal with. In this episode I speak to my troubles with self-talk, worthiness, body dysmorphia and body image, as well as what I've done to mitigate the harmful effects. Negative self-talk can be a symptom of trauma, though not one that is unable to shift. I dive deeply into what has worked for me, telling stories of a few journeys where my self-talk didn't aid me and was more than false. Super-ego, Shamatha Meditation, Anorexia, Developmental Stages, and what it's like to be a Ph.D. student await you in this episode. I really enjoyed making this solo episode and hope it's helpful for you as well. See you next time!

THE INNER VOICE - HOW TO MANAGE YOUR INNER VOICE & NEGATIVE SELF-TALK

THE INNER VOICE - HOW TO MANAGE YOUR INNER VOICE & NEGATIVE SELF-TALK

On this episode, Coco-Chi is talking about the inner voice and how to manage the negative self-talk.
Our past experiences, even the things we don't usually think about, are all alive and active in our daily life in the form of an inner voice - our self-talk.  Everyone has an inner voice...sometimes this inner voice lies to you and fills you up with negativity. What lies are you telling yourself on a daily basis? Could your inner voice be holding you back?  Are you allowing too much negativity in? Your inner voice is your harshest critic and the one that will lower your self-esteem the quickest.
What can you do to silence that negative noise/self-talk?
Listen to the show & learn all about it!

P.S: Please don't forget to review, rate and subscribe on Apple podcast. I'd appreciate that.
