Bret Weinstein and Matt Taibbi: Corruption and its Consequences

    en-usJuly 18, 2020

    Podcast Summary

    • 8 years of academic controversies culminate in larger issueRegret for dismissing academic controversies, divide in journalism between fact-finding and moral clarity, and potential complications from lack of understanding about traditional journalistic model.

The events unfolding in academic institutions a few years ago, which were dismissed by many in journalism as right-wing talking points or insignificant issues, have now escalated into a much larger problem affecting every institution and spilling into the streets. Matt Taibbi, a journalist for Rolling Stone and Substack, expressed regret for not recognizing the significance of these events earlier and acknowledged the need for an open dialogue without the need for apologies. The journalism world is experiencing a similar schism to what happened in academia, with a divide between those who believe in the traditional fact-finding mission of journalism and those who prioritize moral clarity. The lack of understanding about the importance and benefits of the old journalistic model could lead to further complications as we navigate these complex issues.

    • Recognizing the importance of intellectual freedomThe media world is shifting perspective on intellectual freedom, but the movement's viral power and low-quality arguments pose challenges to protecting it.

We are witnessing a shift in perspective among some individuals in the media world regarding the importance of intellectual freedom and the potential threats to the core values of the American experiment. The speaker expresses hope that this recognition will lead to a reckoning within the media industry, but also cautions that the movement's viral power and low-quality arguments could make it difficult for some to protect themselves. The speaker draws a parallel to the Boxing Day tsunami in Asia, where people were caught off guard by the sudden return of the water after a recession, and warns that we may be at a similar point now, where those who thought they were safe or that this wasn't a big deal will soon realize the gravity of the situation. Ultimately, the conversation highlights the importance of acknowledging and addressing the potential dangers to intellectual freedom and the values of the enlightenment, which are currently under fire.

    • Historical societal movements with a push for equity, diversity, and inclusion becoming difficult to opposeThe current societal push for equity, diversity, and inclusion may become institutionalized and difficult to resist, potentially leading to violent or repressive outcomes, as seen in historical events like the Russian Revolution, Chinese Cultural Revolution, and the French Revolution.

The current societal push for equity, diversity, and inclusion, while well-intentioned, is showing signs of becoming an institutionalized movement that may be difficult to oppose once it affects us personally. This phenomenon is reminiscent of historical events like the Russian Revolution, Chinese Cultural Revolution, and the French Revolution, where once these movements gained momentum, they were nearly impossible to resist. The current trend is primarily intellectual and bureaucratic in nature, but the potential for it to become more violent or repressive cannot be ruled out. The concern lies in the fact that even institutions known for their commitment to free speech and academic freedom, like Princeton University, are adopting controversial ideas, and speaking out against them can result in public backlash. The question remains, will this movement join the ranks of history's most tragic events, or is there a way to prevent it from going down that path?

    • Political control and disruption in institutionsGrowing trend of political control disguised as diversity initiatives or anti-racist causes, seizing power and silencing opposing voices, spreading to other sectors including big tech and media corporations, far-reaching implications, crucial to understand and address root causes

There's a growing trend of political control and disruption of essential foundational elements in various institutions, including academia, media, and companies. This control is often disguised as diversity initiatives or anti-racist causes, but its ultimate goal is to seize power and silence opposing voices. The concern goes beyond the number of people protesting on the streets, and lies in the capture of these institutions' leadership and their willingness to indulge demands for firings and changes to organizational missions. Until there's significant resistance to these trends, they're likely to spread to other sectors, including big tech and media corporations. The implications are far-reaching, and it's crucial to understand and address the root causes of this power grab before it becomes a fully-realized turnkey totalitarian state.

    • Traditional institutions facing a crisis of trustNew institutions emerging from crisis in media, audience seeking alternatives to didactic tone, opportunities for adaptation and innovation

The traditional institutions, be it academic or journalistic, are facing a crisis of trust and are struggling to adapt to the changing landscape of information consumption. This instability can lead to the ejection of individuals who challenge the status quo, leaving them to fend for themselves in the outside world. However, this process might not be entirely negative. With the decline of trust in traditional media and the rise of independent voices, there's an opportunity for new institutions to emerge and thrive. The audience is increasingly disenchanted with the didactic and politicized tone of institutional media and is seeking alternatives. The history of this business suggests that new institutions have grown out of such crises, and this trend might continue. Ultimately, it's a time of uncertainty and change, but it also presents opportunities for those who are willing to adapt and innovate.

    • Challenges for Independent Voices in JournalismDespite potential for disruption by independent voices, institutions and power structures pose challenges, including censorship and limiting reach, with figures like Alex Jones being early targets.

While there's potential for new, independent voices to disrupt traditional institutions in journalism, the challenge lies in the power and control these institutions hold. The rise of platforms like YouTube, which can wield immense power but lack accountability, creates a complex situation. Independent voices risk being grouped with noxious content or being censored, limiting their reach and impact. The counterrevolution against independent voices is already underway, with figures like Alex Jones being an early target. The fear is that this trend will continue, narrowing the field and limiting diversity in journalism. The potential for a renaissance in journalism through independent voices is promising, but the institutions and the forces against them present significant challenges.

    • Tech companies as unelected media regulatorsThe concentration of power in a few tech companies for online news distribution can lead to censorship, arbitrary decision-making, and the silencing of certain perspectives, effectively acting as unelected media regulators, with potentially devastating consequences.

The concentration of power in the hands of a few tech companies for online news distribution has led to a serious issue of censorship and arbitrary decision-making, effectively acting as unelected media regulators. This lack of transparency and accountability can result in the silencing of certain perspectives, creating an environment of favoritism and myth-making, which can evaporate values we hold dear. The problem extends beyond social media platforms like Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram, as even financial institutions like Mastercard have been known to wield influence in this regard. The implications of this situation are significant, as it can reduce individuals and organizations to insignificance overnight, with potentially devastating consequences. The lack of interest and awareness among the press regarding this issue is concerning, as the traditional journalistic sensitivity to censorship and control has seemingly vanished.

    • The internet's illusion of neutralityDespite the internet's appearance of neutrality, control can be exerted, potentially silencing individuals and industries, and it's crucial to remain vigilant and challenge these controls before they become the norm.

The internet, as we know it, is not as neutral as we believe it to be. Beneath the surface, there are layers of control that can be activated when necessary, as seen in the cases of Mastercard's restriction on certain transactions and a chemist's inability to sell a legal substance online. This control could potentially extend to silencing individuals or groups, especially journalists, who challenge the status quo. The lack of rebellion from those expected to resist this control, such as journalists and academics, is concerning, as is the widespread epidemic of cowardice and learned helplessness. The potential for this control to impact individuals and industries is imminent, and it's crucial to recognize and address these issues before it's too late. The Soviet-era analogy of hushed conversations between spouses about work matters highlights the current state of affairs in the press, where dissent and open discussion are becoming increasingly rare. It's essential to remain vigilant and challenge these controls before they become the norm.

    • The Democratic Party and Evergreen College: Failing to Adapt and Facing ResistanceThe political climate in the US resembles an evergreen college that's failing to adapt, with both parties losing voter trust and the risk of extremist groups gaining power leading to further instability.

The current political climate in the United States can be compared to an evergreen college that is failing to adapt and facing resistance from an armed population. The Democratic Party, represented by Joe Biden, is seen as being intellectually broken and susceptible to being taken over by extremist groups. The anger and discontent in the streets are about real issues, but instead of addressing the root causes, there's a risk that power will be given to these groups to extract from other citizens. This could lead to further instability and conflict, rather than solving the underlying problems. It's important to note that the Republican Party is also seen as becoming an influence peddling racket, and both parties are losing the trust of the voters. The danger lies in the potential for the Democratic Party to empower these extremist groups in order to win elections, which could be a catalyst for even greater conflict and instability.

    • Democrats using wokeness to win electionsThe Democratic Party prioritizes using wokeness as a tool for fundraising and political gain, potentially leading to empty promises and lack of progress on crucial issues.

The Democratic Party has adopted the language of wokeness as a means to appease their donors and win elections, rather than implementing meaningful structural reforms. This tactic became apparent during Bernie Sanders' campaigns in 2016 and 2020, with the party using identity politics to attack him. However, this approach is concerning as it may lead to empty promises and a lack of progress on important issues, while potentially excluding some of their biggest donors from impact for a while. The inconsistency in the Democrats' stance on certain issues, such as statues and Russia allegations, further highlights this issue. Additionally, the potential danger lies in what could happen if a real fascist arises in response to the current political climate, as the US and the world depend on the US to maintain stability.

    • Trump's insecurities and narcissism limited damage, but next time could be worseCriticizes Trump's presidency, media's portrayal, calls for addressing underlying issues to prevent future similar outcomes

The insecurities and narcissism of former President Trump actually limited the potential damage of his presidency, but the next time a similar figure emerges, the consequences could be more severe. The analysis also criticizes the media's portrayal of Trump as an otherworldly threat instead of focusing on the structural issues that led to his election. The ongoing debate about Trump's presidency and the role of the Democratic Party in allowing it to happen should be a call to action to address the underlying issues and prevent similar outcomes in the future.

    • The impeachment process raises questions about the nature of electing a president and the role of vice presidentsThe impeachment process has highlighted the vulnerability of our political system and the need to address underlying weaknesses in payment and internet infrastructure before a crisis occurs.

The current political climate has created a troubling dynamic where the capabilities and suitability of our leaders are being called into question. The impeachment process may have been initiated for valid reasons, but it also served to highlight the vulnerability of our political system and the potential for alternative arguments to emerge. For instance, some might argue that a less capable leader, such as Joe Biden, could potentially lead us into safer waters than a volatile one like Trump. However, this line of reasoning raises important questions about the nature of electing a president and the role of vice presidents. Furthermore, the conversation touched upon the need to address the underlying vulnerabilities in our systems, particularly in the areas of payment and internet infrastructure. The rapid advancement of technology and the potential for these layers to be compromised underscores the importance of building alternative solutions now rather than waiting for a crisis to occur. While it may be disheartening to focus on the challenges we face, it is crucial that we begin exploring potential solutions and preparing for the future.

    • Exploring alternatives to the current political climateInstead of tearing down structures without understanding, a collaborative approach like Unity could offer a way forward for those seeking alternatives to the current political climate.

The current political climate calls for new ideas and solutions, as many people are disillusioned with the existing system. The Occupy Wall Street movement served as a catalyst for thinking about alternatives to an economy dominated by a few large banks. However, it's important to be mindful of the potential dangers of naive solutions that involve tearing down existing structures without a clear understanding of their complexities. Instead, a collaborative and constructive approach, such as the Unity idea, could offer a way forward. This approach would involve bringing people together to find common ground and work towards solutions, much like how politics used to function in the past. The success of this approach relies on the ability to appeal to the large number of independent voters who are looking for an alternative to the current polarized political landscape.

    • Political landscape driven by extremes, parties unable to represent public interestsPeople must break pattern of passivity and take ownership of political process to vote for candidates truly representing their interests

The current political landscape in America is driven by extremes, with the majority of the population agreeing on issues but feeling powerless to effect change due to the business models of political parties. The parties are unable to represent the public's interests because doing so would mean going against their own interests. The lesser evil paradox keeps people voting for less-than-ideal options. Unity 2020 aims to address this issue by allowing people to vote for candidates who truly represent their interests, but it requires breaking the pattern of passivity and taking ownership of the political process. The speaker, a journalist with a unique perspective, has managed to report accurately and courageously despite facing powerful enemies, emphasizing the importance of active citizenship.

    • Holding power accountable through journalismInvestigative journalism's role is to challenge power and reveal uncomfortable truths, but the profession has shifted towards access and entertainment, requiring journalists to balance adversity with success.

The role of investigative journalists in the past was to challenge power and make uncomfortable truths known to the public, often facing backlash and criticism. However, the profession has shifted towards a more sympathetic and access-driven approach, making it challenging to maintain an adversarial stance. Success in journalism can be achieved by obtaining exclusive stories or focusing on making the work entertaining, clear, and appealing to a wide audience. Despite the difficulties, it's crucial to continue the tradition of holding those in power accountable and informing the public.

    • Personal projects are essential for career survivalBuilding a personal project outside of a day job is crucial for career growth and can provide a safety net during uncertain times.

Building a personal project outside of a day job is crucial for survival in today's era. This was emphasized by the speaker's experience when they were driven out of their workplace and had already built an audience. Another important point raised was the significance of humor in movements and its absence in the current context, which can lead to rigidity of thinking. The speaker highlighted how the 1960s liberation movements were successful due to their attractive nature, which included great music and comedy, and celebrated the common humanity of people. In contrast, the current movement lacks art, music, and comedy, making it less appealing and less effective in reaching a wider audience.

    • Humorlessness as a sign of a power grabThe absence of humor in a new ideology may be a weakness, as people need to laugh and comedians may expose its inconsistencies, potentially leading to its downfall.

The current new ideology is characterized by a lack of humor, which is a concerning sign of a power grab that cannot afford to be candid. This humorlessness is a significant weakness as people have an inherent need to laugh and explore the fringes of consciousness through humor. The absence of humor in this movement may be devastating once a brave and funny comedian, such as Dave Chappelle, tackles the material, leading to a potential downfall. The inability to acknowledge and laugh at the absurdities and inconsistencies of the ideology may ultimately be its undoing.

    • Individual self-interest and administrative bloatUniversities' administrative growth can be attributed to individuals serving their self-interest, leading to a self-protecting structure and perpetuation of institutional existence.

The proliferation of administrative staff in institutions, including universities, can be attributed to individuals serving their full self-interest, creating a self-protecting structure. George Bridges, for instance, increased the size of the administration to shield himself from potential malfeasance and to have more votes. However, institutions, once constructed to solve a problem, can evolve to perpetuate their existence, leading to a bloated administration. This phenomenon, as observed by Jordan Peterson, can be seen in various forms, including the contradictory notion that addressing social issues like white supremacy is both an urgent necessity and an incurable problem. The tipping point for this trend is less clear, but it likely also involves the accumulation of power and resources by those who benefit from larger administrations.

    • Journalist Matt Taibbi supports Unity 2020 movement for unity and transparencyJournalist Matt Taibbi endorses Unity 2020, emphasizing the importance of unity, transparency, and financial support for independent journalists and content creators.

Matt Taibbi, a journalist known for his investigative reporting and critical analysis, expressed his support for the Unity 2020 movement, which aims to preserve the republic through unity and transparency. Taibbi acknowledged the importance of the initiative and encouraged people to take it seriously. He also emphasized the need for financial support for independent journalists and content creators in today's climate. Taibbi shared his appreciation for the quality of Unity 2020's work and expressed his excitement for their future conversations. He invited the Unity 2020 team to appear on his show and encouraged his audience to support the movement. Taibbi also reminded listeners that supporting independent voices and content is crucial in the current political and media landscape. Overall, the conversation highlighted the importance of unity, transparency, and financial support for independent journalism and content creation.

In this 226th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss a new breakthrough in plant genetics: polyploid potatoes and corn from Ohalo Genetics, which are claimed to double the harvest from individual plants. Beginning with a discussion of naturally occurring polyploidy in other species, including frogs, we analyze the discussion of Ohalo’s new products with an evolutionary lens. Is it possible that biotechnology can evade trade-offs, or is this utopian thinking in the corporate world? Why do so many mistakes of modernity come in the form of people accustomed to complicated systems, applying their knowledge to complex systems? Finally: does Terrence Howard (recently on Joe Rogan) have a predictive model, or is he just blowing smoke?

Anecdote in Science: The 224th Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

In this 224th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss animal behavior: the implications of an orangutan using a medicinal plant to treat a wound, and the one-off videos that we’ve all seen—of cats preventing toddlers from falling, of a beluga whale retrieving a woman’s phone. What does this say about the minds of these other organisms, and about us? Also: dog domestication, from wolves, but not from foxes. And: the New York Times publishes more insipid garbage about vaccine injury, Bret returns to the question of what safety means, and The Nation turns its back on its muckraking roots.

Never Alone: The 223rd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

In this 223rd in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss science and religion, materialism and other ways of understanding our world. Can analysis and quantification explain everything? Can narrative, intuition, and creativity? All are or should be part of the scientific process; science is incomplete with only one mode. We also discuss models, how they fail, how difficult they are to assess, and what one recent climate model has to say about the role of air pollution in Earth’s temperature. Enlightenment values require that we use our freedom to inquire about all things that we are curious about. Also: happy Beltane!

Why Darwin was Right: The 222nd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

Why Darwin was Right: The 222nd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

In this 222nd in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss evolution, and how we know that it is true. We discuss the different kinds of beliefs that people have—beliefs that attempt to reconcile with reality, vs beliefs that reconcile with social standing and comfort. If your beliefs put you on the outs with your friends, do you change your beliefs, or your friends? Are you willing to give up the cocktail party for reality? We also discuss research published in 2000 and funded by Fauci’s NIAID, which demonstrated that it was possible to make chimeric coronaviruses, swapping the spike protein from one to a different species entirely. Finally: sex-biased gene expression, in which genes are expressed differently in the two sexes, in anatomical systems as varied as brain, kidneys, and liver.

    Seen and Obscene

The birth of obscenity laws in the 1870s provides a cautionary tale for the present moment, when far-right conservatives incorrectly label books “sexually explicit” as a way to provoke outrage in communities nationwide. This episode, we delve into the parallels that history can reveal and hear from students in Texas fighting for their freedom to read.
