Elon Musk, Twitter, and Free Speech: Bret Speaks with Jim Rutt

    en-usMay 21, 2022

    Podcast Summary

    • Exploring adjustable parameters in social media algorithmsAdjustable social media parameters could lead to a more open-minded and inclusive online community by allowing users to experiment with different perspectives and feeds.

Exploring the idea of adjustable parameters in social media algorithms and the ability to see the world from other users' perspectives could lead to a significant shift in understanding and connection between people. This concept, suggested by Brent Weinstein, could bring about innovation and valuable insights, as users would be able to experiment with different perspectives and feeds, potentially leading to a more open-minded and inclusive online community. This idea was discussed during a conversation between Bret Weinstein and Jim Rutt on the Dark Horse Podcast, where they shared their political backgrounds and how their views have evolved over the years. Despite their past political differences, they found common ground in the importance of fostering open-mindedness and critical thinking.

    • An Independent Thinker's Perspective on Politics and ProgressivismAn independent thinker advocates for a centrist, pragmatic progressivism addressing economic opportunities and social equality, and endorses companies prioritizing health and sustainability.

The interviewee is an independent thinker who doesn't align with any single political party or ideology. He believes that the current political landscape is flawed, with both sides abandoning economic opportunities in favor of identity politics and tribalism. The Emancipation Party, an idea he was involved with a few years ago, aimed to offer a non-ideological, nonidentitarian alternative, but the timing wasn't right. The interviewee still sees a need for a centrist, pragmatic progressivism that addresses economic opportunities and social equality. He also endorses companies like Public Goods, which offer high-quality, affordable products with a focus on health and sustainability.

    • The Emancipation Party's resilience and adaptabilityThe Emancipation Party, an idea that the current system is unsustainable, continues to evolve and spread, focusing on creating a game theoretically stable solution to displace the current system.

The concept of the Emancipation Party, or Game B, has proven to be resilient and adaptable, even when physical meetings came to a halt. Instead of giving up, the focus shifted to preserving the idea and allowing it to grow and evolve. Game B is an idea that our current system is unsustainable and requires a better solution. This solution must be game theoretically stable, meaning it can outcompete the current system and spread contagiously. The movement has persisted and diversified, with various groups working to bring the idea to life. The goal is not to create a blueprint for a perfect society, but to develop a solution that can effectively displace the current system. The Emancipation Party may not have achieved its goal yet, but those who understand its importance won't give up on it.

    • Embrace a non-utopian, experimental approach to societal progressSocietal progress requires a non-utopian, experimental, and adaptive approach, grounded in a deep understanding of complexity and the limitations of prediction and control.

The concept of creating a perfect, utopian society is an unrealistic and potentially dangerous goal. Instead, we should adopt a non-utopian, experimental approach to societal progress, drawing inspiration from complex systems like a hummingbird's evolution. This approach involves setting a direction, but being open to surprise and learning from the system itself. The speaker emphasizes the importance of empirical and experimental perspectives, as well as a long-term, incremental approach to improvement. He also highlights the importance of humility and openness to feedback, and the value of ongoing learning and collaboration. The speaker's own history of involvement in online communities, dating back to the early days of the internet, lends credibility to this perspective. Additionally, the speaker discusses the importance of understanding the limitations of prediction and control in complex systems, and the need to embrace uncertainty and adapt to changing circumstances. Overall, the key takeaway is that societal progress requires a non-utopian, experimental, and adaptive approach, grounded in a deep understanding of complexity and the limitations of prediction and control.

    • Balancing Content and Decorum Moderation in Online CommunitiesEffective online community management requires balancing content moderation and decorum rules to maintain a suitable online environment, essential for creating functional communities.

Effective online community management involves balancing content moderation and decorum moderation, or behavior rules. Decorum rules, similar to manners in the real world, are essential for creating a suitable online environment. These rules can vary depending on the platform's purpose and audience. For instance, a family-oriented platform may have stricter decorum rules than an adult-focused one. Decorum moderation is also viewpoint-neutral, focusing on maintaining order and respect within the community. The ongoing debate about Elon Musk's potential takeover of Twitter has oversimplified the issue, with some critics assuming Musk would eliminate all moderation, leading to an online free-for-all. However, Musk himself has acknowledged the need for some level of moderation. To clarify the discussion, it's crucial to distinguish between content moderation and decorum moderation and understand the importance of each in creating a functional online community.

    • Balancing decorum and free speech on social mediaEffective moderation requires a balance between respectful behavior and protection of all perspectives, while addressing clear-cut cases of harmful content.

Effective moderation on social media platforms requires a balance between decorum and free speech. Decorum refers to respectful behavior towards others, while free speech is the protection of all perspectives. The speaker suggests that in smaller communities, decorum can be maintained through community agreements, but in larger platforms like Twitter, formal rules are necessary. Additionally, there is a distinction between content and decorum, with content being easier to define and regulate. In terms of content, there are clear-cut cases of inherently bad content, such as advocacy for violence or crime, and dangerous content, such as instructions for making bombs or poisons. The speaker expresses confidence that Elon Musk, as the new owner of Twitter, will make reasonable decisions regarding content moderation. Overall, the key takeaway is that effective moderation requires a thoughtful approach that balances the need for decorum and free speech, while also addressing clear-cut cases of harmful content.

    • Allowing a wide range of ideas to circulate is crucial for progressAllowing diverse ideas, even potentially harmful ones, to circulate can foster innovation and new ways of thinking, contributing to a better future

While it's important to moderate harmful or dangerous viewpoints on social media platforms, an absolutist approach to point of view moderation could stifle the flow of fresh and potentially valuable ideas. The speaker argues that history shows that upstart ideas, even those that may seem fringe or unpopular at first, have the potential to bring about progress and positive change. Therefore, it's crucial to allow a wide range of ideas to circulate, even if some of them may be considered bad or false. This approach, the speaker suggests, is essential for helping our world become a better place by fostering innovation and new ways of thinking. The speaker also emphasizes that the line between what is worth allowing and what is not can be difficult to draw, but it should be done liberally to avoid squelching fresh ideas. Overall, the speaker's perspective is that we should be open to new ideas, even if they may challenge the status quo, in order to make progress and navigate towards a better future.

    • Protecting the fringe: crucial for progress despite containing garbageBe cautious about suppressing anti-status quo ideas to avoid societal stagnation, but filter out harmful or threatening content to ensure safety and privacy

Protecting the fringe, which is often the source of groundbreaking ideas, is crucial for progress, despite the fact that most of what exists on the fringe is garbage. History shows us that those who were once considered fringe, such as the founding fathers and scientists during the enlightenment, were labeled as heretics and even faced persecution. However, it is impossible to distinguish between what is ahead of its time and nonsense using a complexity lens. Therefore, we must be cautious about suppressing anti-status quo ideas, as this could lead to societal stagnation and even disaster. For instance, China's decision to burn their treasure ships and abandon exploration during the late Ming era prevented them from making significant progress and ultimately falling behind other civilizations. Similarly, in the field of genetics, the vast majority of mutations are harmful, but without them, we would still be single-cell organisms. Regarding doxing, while it may be considered a violation of decorum, it is not a form of content that needs to be protected as it poses a direct threat to individuals' privacy and safety. Ultimately, the challenge lies in finding a balance between protecting potentially important ideas and filtering out nonsense.

    • Advocating for Regulatory Infractions on Social MediaClear rules, human review, and an appeals process leading to arbitration are essential for maintaining a fair and open social media ecosystem while allowing for civil disobedience-like advocacy within acceptable bounds.

While advocating for the breaking of regulatory laws on social media platforms like Twitter can be a gray area, it's important to consider the context and nature of the laws in question. Non-violent, regulatory infractions, similar to civil disobedience, may be worth advocating for in order to speak truth to power. However, there needs to be a clear and transparent adjudication process for determining whether such advocacy falls within the bounds of tolerated behavior on the platform. This process should include a clear and comprehensible set of rules, human review, and an appeals process leading to arbitration with third-party arbitrators. This approach aims to maintain a healthy ecosystem on social media platforms while ensuring fairness and accountability.

    • Baseball Arbitration Model for Social Media DisputesA proposed system uses baseball arbitration with large financial incentives for fair and transparent dispute resolution between users and social media platforms

The proposed system for resolving disputes between users and social media platforms, as described in the discussion, utilizes a baseball arbitration model with significant financial incentives for both parties. This structure ensures that decisions are made by independent and professional arbitrators, creating a transparent and self-liquidating system for achieving justice. The potential for large stakes, up to $1,000,000, provides an effective deterrent for platforms to maintain fair and just moderation practices. Additionally, the marketplace aspect of the proposal allows users to syndicate their appeals and attract backers, creating a community-driven solution. However, it's important to note that the proposed parameters, such as the $100 minimum stake, may need to be adjusted to ensure accessibility and efficiency for all users. Furthermore, a bill of rights, outlining the intentions behind the various platform rules, would help clarify ambiguities as the system evolves. Overall, this proposal offers a promising approach to addressing issues of moderation and justice in the digital age.

    • Transparent third-party arbitration for social media disputesTransparent third-party arbitration with a user bill of rights could address disputes on social media, but feasibility for all users is a concern. Jury of users was rejected due to potential biases.

The use of transparent third-party arbitration, with a potential bill of rights for users, could be an effective solution for adjudicating disputes on social media platforms. However, there are concerns about the feasibility of this approach for all users, especially those in disadvantaged situations. Another proposed solution, jury of users, was rejected due to potential tribalism and motivated reasoning. It's crucial for social media companies, like Twitter, to make their algorithmic processes transparent to mitigate potential biases and improve the overall fairness of the platform. Ultimately, finding the right balance between user autonomy, community standards, and fairness in online disputes is a complex challenge that requires ongoing dialogue and refinement.

    • Identifying unbiased individuals using algorithmsAlgorithms can identify potential unbiased individuals for fairer decision-making, but pose risks of unintended consequences and reinforcing tribal dynamics. Human oversight and transparency are crucial to mitigate these challenges.

While algorithms can identify tribal dynamics and biases, they may also be capable of identifying individuals who are capable of making nuanced, independent decisions. These individuals could be considered "untriggered" or "unbiased," and finding them could potentially lead to more fair and balanced decision-making processes. However, identifying these individuals using a computer algorithm is a complex challenge. A potential solution could be to test and compare the performance of human arbitrators with an algorithm designed to identify unbiased individuals. Another issue raised in the discussion is the lack of transparency and potential manipulation of social media feed algorithms. These algorithms can influence user behavior by controlling what content is shown and when, leading to addictive behavior and potential punishment for those trying to limit their use. The lack of transparency in these algorithms can lead to unintended consequences and a loss of trust in the platforms. Therefore, the key takeaway is that while algorithms have the potential to identify and mitigate biases, they also pose a risk of creating unintended consequences and reinforcing tribal dynamics. To address these challenges, it's essential to consider a combination of human oversight and algorithmic solutions, with a focus on transparency and accountability. This approach could lead to more fair, nuanced, and independent decision-making in various domains, including social media and beyond.

    • A Market for Feed AlgorithmsExploring an open market for feed algorithms, making them open source but requiring a monthly fee, fosters transparency, innovation, and makes manipulation harder, while potentially saving western civilization.

There's a need for transparency in social media algorithms, but opening them up completely comes with risks. The speaker proposes a solution of having an open market for feed algorithms, making them open source but requiring users to pay a monthly fee to subscribe. This way, innovation thrives, and the complexity of gaming the algorithms increases, making manipulation more difficult. However, there's a risk that this could lead to a better understanding of the manipulation we face online, potentially saving western civilization. The speaker also suggests adding features like sliders that let users see the world from different perspectives to foster empathy and understanding. Overall, the key takeaway is the importance of finding a balance between transparency, innovation, and the potential risks in social media algorithms.

    • Musk's Twitter takeover: Opportunities and RisksMusk's potential Twitter takeover presents opportunities to challenge Silicon Valley's discourse monopoly but comes with risks. Seek advice, navigate complexities, and consider perspective-switching for increased empathy and understanding.

Elon Musk's potential takeover of Twitter presents a unique opportunity to challenge the monopoly of Silicon Valley's "discourse chokers," but it also comes with significant risks. Musk, who is known for his brilliance in solving complicated engineering problems, may struggle in the realm of the complex, which encompasses networks, humans, and game theory. To navigate this complex landscape, Musk would benefit from seeking advice and expertise from those with experience in this domain. Additionally, the idea of allowing users to switch perspectives in their feeds, as suggested by Brett Weinstein, could lead to increased empathy and understanding, ultimately contributing to a more conscious and insightful collective consciousness.

    • Understanding Twitter as a complex systemMusk's approach to Twitter, rooted in adaptive thinking and continuous improvement, aligns with research on complex systems, emphasizing the importance of minimizing mistakes and embracing unintended consequences.

Twitter, with its vast number of complex and strategic users, forms a highly complex system that requires adaptive thinking and real-time problem-solving. Elon Musk, despite his imperfections, might bring about significant improvements to Twitter, but only with the right guidance. The distinction between complex and complicated systems is crucial in understanding the challenges and potential solutions for Twitter. Musk's understanding of diminishing returns and innovation's stacked S-curves aligns with research in this area, highlighting the importance of adaptive thinking and continuous improvement. Ultimately, the goal should be to move in the right direction and minimize the number of stupid mistakes while embracing the unintended consequences that come with such a complex system.

    • Understanding the S-curve of innovationMaintaining a diverse range of perspectives and ideas, even during lean times, is crucial for continued innovation and growth. Be aware of the S-curve dynamics to make informed decisions.

Understanding the S-curve of innovation and its implications is crucial for individuals and organizations to avoid getting stuck in one dominant school of thought and missing out on future opportunities. The discussion highlighted the example of physics and its over-investment in string theory, which may have stunted progress in other areas due to the allure of high dividends in the beginning. The importance of maintaining a diverse range of perspectives and ideas, even during lean times, was emphasized to ensure continued innovation and growth. In the context of Elon Musk's takeover of Twitter, the conversation brought up the idea that a brilliant, benevolent dictator might be the best form of governance, but the challenges of ensuring consistency and avoiding potential negative consequences make it a complex issue. Overall, the conversation underscored the importance of being aware of the S-curve dynamics and making informed decisions based on that understanding.

    • Could Elon Musk be an effective benevolent dictator for Twitter?Elon Musk's innovative mindset, authenticity, and disregard for conventional thinking make him an unusual and potentially effective leader for Twitter despite the risks of power corruption and lack of accountability.

The idea of a benevolent dictator leading a large organization or platform, such as Twitter, comes with significant risks. Power tends to corrupt, and there's no guarantee of a handoff plan or accountability. However, in the case of Elon Musk's potential takeover of Twitter, some argue that his innovative mindset, authenticity, and disregard for conventional thinking make him an unusual and potentially effective leader. Despite the risks, his track record of success in various industries gives reason to believe he could bring about positive change. Additionally, the startup process can allow individuals to rise to power without being corrupted, but the immense wealth and influence that comes with it can sometimes have the opposite effect on most billionaires. Musk's actions may challenge this norm, as he continues to push boundaries and disrupt industries.

    • Using wealth boldly for unconventional visionsWealthy individuals should embrace risks and defy societal expectations, like Elon Musk, Marc Andreessen, and Peter Thiel, to drive change and challenge the status quo, but collective consciousness and involvement are also essential for progress.

Individuals with significant wealth, often referred to as "fuck you money," should use their resources boldly and pursue unconventional visions, even if it means embracing failure. This was a recurring theme in the conversation, as it's counterintuitive to see wealthy individuals play it safe or conform to societal expectations. Elon Musk was highlighted as an example of someone who defies convention and isn't afraid to take risks, despite his immense wealth. Marc Andreessen and Peter Thiel were also mentioned as notable figures who have used their wealth and influence to challenge the status quo and explore new ideas. Overall, the consensus was that we need more bold, unconventional thinkers, especially during times of societal upheaval. However, it's important to remember that these individuals should not have a monopoly on driving change; the collective consciousness and involvement of the people are crucial for meaningful progress.

    • The importance of continuous learning and improvement in machine learning and AIAppreciate and engage with new ideas, build upon them, and contribute critiques to advance the field of machine learning and AI. The field is constantly evolving, so stay open-minded and maintain a growth mindset.

Learning from this conversation between Jim and Brett is the importance of continuous learning and improvement in the field of machine learning and AI. Jim expressed his appreciation for Brett's work and encouraged readers to engage with it, build upon it, and contribute new ideas and critiques. He emphasized that the field is constantly evolving, and there is always more to learn and discover. The conversation ended on a positive note, with both parties expressing their excitement about the potential for new insights and discoveries in the future. Overall, this conversation underscores the importance of collaboration, open-mindedness, and a growth mindset in the pursuit of advancements in machine learning and AI.

Anecdote in Science: The 224th Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

In this 224th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss animal behavior: the implications of an orangutan using a medicinal plant to treat a wound, and the one-off videos that we’ve all seen—of cats preventing toddlers from falling, of a beluga whale retrieving a woman’s phone. What does this say about the minds of these other organisms, and about us? Also: dog domestication, from wolves, but not from foxes. And: the New York Times publishes more insipid garbage about vaccine injury, Bret returns to the question of what safety means, and The Nation turns its back on its muckraking roots.

Never Alone: The 223rd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

In this 223rd in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss science and religion, materialism and other ways of understanding our world. Can analysis and quantification explain everything? Can narrative, intuition, and creativity? All are or should be part of the scientific process; science is incomplete with only one mode. We also discuss models, how they fail, how difficult they are to assess, and what one recent climate model has to say about the role of air pollution in Earth’s temperature. Enlightenment values require that we use our freedom to inquire about all things that we are curious about. Also: happy Beltane!

Why Darwin was Right: The 222nd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

In this 222nd in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss evolution, and how we know that it is true. We discuss the different kinds of beliefs that people have—beliefs that attempt to reconcile with reality, vs beliefs that reconcile with social standing and comfort. If your beliefs put you on the outs with your friends, do you change your beliefs, or your friends? Are you willing to give up the cocktail party for reality? We also discuss research published in 2000 and funded by Fauci’s NIAID, which demonstrated that it was possible to make chimeric coronaviruses, swapping the spike protein from one to a different species entirely. Finally: sex-biased gene expression, in which genes are expressed differently in the two sexes, in anatomical systems as varied as brain, kidneys, and liver.
