Gaslighting the Vaccine Injured: A DarkHorse Story

    en-usNovember 26, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • Nick's Changing Perspective on the PandemicInitially dismissive of the pandemic's severity, Nick's perspective evolved to prioritize societal impact over personal risk as the situation's unpredictability became clear.

The COVID-19 pandemic brought about significant shifts in people's perspectives, including Nick Gibson's, who started out dismissing the virus' severity due to his good health. However, as the situation evolved, he became more concerned about the broader implications of the pandemic and the impact on vulnerable populations. By May and June, as cases decreased, he began visiting his older parents without precautions. But the fall brought a lockdown and the cancellation of outdoor activities, leaving him perplexed and marking a turning point in his understanding of the virus' unpredictability. Despite the confusing information landscape, Nick's anxiety grew more about the pandemic's societal impact than his personal risk.

    • COVID-19 pandemic's unnecessary closure of outdoor spacesThe pandemic's closure of outdoor spaces was an overreaction, and sensible alternatives like closing indoor sports could have been considered.

The widespread closure of outdoor spaces for healthy activities during the COVID-19 pandemic, despite being later proven unnecessary, was an overreaction that seemed absurd at multiple levels. At the beginning of the pandemic, many believed that the measures being taken were sensible, even if their effectiveness was uncertain. However, as time went on and symbols of compliance like masks became mandatory, many reevaluated their initial positions. One example of a sensible alternative could have been the closure of indoor sports, which carries a higher risk of virus transmission. During this discussion, we also had the opportunity to talk about two sponsors: Paleo Valley and Vivo Barefoot. Paleo Valley offers a range of grass-fed, organic, and naturally fermented products, including beef sticks that are not only delicious but also nutritious and free from harmful additives. Vivo Barefoot shoes, on the other hand, are designed to mimic the natural shape and function of feet, promoting foot strength and overall health. Both sponsors prioritize human health and environmental sustainability, making them excellent choices for those seeking high-quality and ethically-sourced products.

    • Personal perspectives on vaccines can changeIndividuals' vaccine stances can shift based on new information and circumstances. Stay open-minded and consider businesses promoting sustainability and social responsibility.

Individuals' perspectives and experiences regarding important issues, such as vaccines, can evolve over time. This was exemplified in our conversation, where I initially expressed skepticism towards certain vaccine-related discussions but eventually got vaccinated due to social pressure and personal circumstances. Moreover, Vivobarefoot, the company we mentioned earlier, stands out as a business pioneering regenerative principles, using sustainably sourced natural and recycled materials for their footwear. They offer an exclusive discount and a free trial for new customers, so check them out at vivobarefoot.com with the code darkhorse15. In the beginning of 2021, there was widespread excitement about the availability of vaccines. However, my personal stance was that I didn't need it due to my age, health, and working from home. But as the vaccine became more accessible, I started to have concerns about its safety and efficacy. Eventually, I got vaccinated to support others and attend a family event. However, I experienced adverse symptoms, which I acknowledge were relatively mild compared to others. Throughout this experience, I learned that it's essential to keep an open mind and consider new information as it emerges. Additionally, I was reminded of the importance of businesses like Vivobarefoot that prioritize sustainability and social responsibility.

    • Ignoring health symptoms can have severe consequencesListen to your body, don't dismiss symptoms, and seek professional help when needed to maintain good health

Neglecting one's health, even if it seems manageable during stressful times, can lead to serious consequences. The individual in this discussion ignored subtle symptoms of fatigue and chest tightness after receiving a vaccine, assuming they were just signs of burnout. However, these symptoms worsened, leading to heart palpitations, extreme fatigue, and even a suspected heart attack. Despite visiting the ER and undergoing various tests, no clear diagnosis was found. It took a significant period of time and a visible decline in health for the individual to acknowledge and address their condition. This experience underscores the importance of listening to our bodies, seeking professional help when needed, and not dismissing symptoms as insignificant.

    • The importance of a good doctor-patient relationshipFinding a trusted healthcare professional who takes your concerns seriously, conducts thorough tests, and provides clear diagnoses and effective treatments is crucial for managing complex health issues and boosting overall well-being.

Having a trusted healthcare professional who not only knows what they're doing but also follows through with proper diagnosis and treatment is crucial for patients dealing with complex health issues. The speaker in this conversation had struggled with unexplained symptoms and felt dismissed by previous doctors. However, when they met Dr. Corey, they found someone who took their concerns seriously, conducted thorough tests, and provided a clear diagnosis and effective treatment. This not only improved the speaker's physical health but also boosted their confidence and overall well-being. The experience underscores the importance of a strong doctor-patient relationship and the potential consequences of misdiagnosis or dismissive attitudes from healthcare providers.

    • Institutional mishandling of COVID-19 shifts speaker's perspectivePersonal experiences and revelations led the speaker to question institutions, do thorough research, and stay informed due to potential for nefarious activities

The speaker's perspective on institutions and their handling of the COVID-19 situation has significantly shifted due to personal experiences and revelations about the vaccines. Prior to COVID-19, the speaker held a libertarian viewpoint and expected institutions to slowly and inefficiently approach the right answer. However, they were proven wrong, leading to increased skepticism and a more cautious approach to trusting institutions. The speaker's own adverse reaction to the vaccine and the realization of its deployment under false pretenses has made them more aware of potential nefarious activities in various contexts. Now, they believe it's essential to do thorough research and question the mundane explanations, as they can no longer assume they are always correct. The speaker expresses sympathy for those who have gone through similar experiences and encourages everyone to stay informed and cautious.

    • Learning from Challenges to BeliefsMaintain social connections, acknowledge adjustments to beliefs, recognize power dynamics, practice empathy, and remain open to change.

Maintaining strong social connections is crucial during times of uncertainty or when facing profound differences, even those with potential life-or-death implications. The speaker learned this lesson the hard way after discovering information that challenged their worldview. They struggled with managing anxiety and maintaining a grounded perspective while acknowledging the significant adjustments to their beliefs. The concept of a "force" was described as a collection of incentives, people, and things shaping society or specific situations. The speaker admitted being too naive to certain incentives and the existence of sociopathic and psychopathic individuals wielding disproportionate power. They also recognized the importance of empathy and listening to others, even if they don't agree, as long as the analytical process remains open to change. Ultimately, it's essential to approach differences with a willingness to learn and adapt, rather than labeling those with opposing views as morally defective.

    • Social pressure silences those injured by vaccinesPeople who have experienced vaccine injuries face social pressure to self-censor, even from their doctors, highlighting a concerning phenomenon.

There exists a powerful social force compelling people, even those who are usually open about sharing information, to self-censor their experiences with vaccine injuries. The speaker, who had personally experienced such an injury, found that even sharing their story privately with their doctor was met with pressure to get vaccinated again. This social pressure is so strong that it silences those who have been harmed, suggesting a significant and concerning phenomenon. The speaker also shared an experience from before the trucker protest in Canada, where they went public with their skepticism towards mandatory vaccinations and received both support and criticism. Despite the challenges, they felt the need to speak out in a constructive way. The speaker's anecdotes highlight the importance of acknowledging and understanding the experiences of those who have been injured by vaccines, and the need to address the social forces that silence their voices.

    • Dismissal and Isolation of Those Injured by COVID-19 VaccinesThose injured by COVID-19 vaccines face challenges in accessing support and being believed, leading to feelings of abandonment, misunderstanding, and stigma. It's essential to acknowledge their experiences and provide them with necessary resources for healing.

The experience of those injured by the COVID-19 vaccine has been met with dismissal, gaslighting, and isolation. Individuals who have had adverse reactions to the vaccine have faced significant challenges in accessing support and being believed. The healthcare system's response has been slow and bureaucratic, leaving many feeling abandoned and misunderstood. The stigma surrounding vaccine injuries has led to the shutting down of support groups and the demonization of those who speak out about their experiences. This has further compounded the mental and emotional load for those already dealing with physical symptoms. The right to connect with others in similar situations and seek understanding and validation is essential. The dismissal of vaccine injuries and the labeling of those who speak out as "anti-vaxxers" is not only callous but also inhumane. It is crucial to acknowledge the experiences of those who have been injured and provide them with the support and resources they need to heal.

    • Approaching vaccine recommendations with care and considerationDoctors should consider individual physiological differences, potential allergies, genetic predispositions, and evolving scientific understanding when making vaccine recommendations. Prioritize patient autonomy and well-being over societal pressures.

Doctors and medical professionals should approach each patient's unique situation with care and consideration, especially when it comes to vaccine recommendations. The speaker's experience of experiencing unexplained disruptions after getting vaccinated highlights the importance of considering individual physiological differences and potential allergies or genetic predispositions. Furthermore, the speaker argues that doctors should be aware of the evolving scientific understanding of the vaccine's safety and efficacy and adjust their recommendations accordingly. The speaker also emphasizes the importance of integrity and courage for medical professionals in the face of societal pressures and the need to prioritize patient autonomy and well-being. In summary, doctors should approach vaccine recommendations with a nuanced understanding of each patient's unique situation and prioritize patient autonomy and well-being over societal pressures.

    • The importance of values and emotional intelligence before tackling harmful systemsValues form the bedrock of our decisions, but it's crucial to have emotional intelligence to navigate challenging systems. Questionable vaccine transmission arguments and data manipulation highlight the importance of a strong ethical foundation.

Having a strong foundation of values and emotional intelligence is crucial before focusing on other skills. If values are not deeply held, they become insignificant. However, not everyone may be in a position to publicly challenge harmful systems, especially those who fear losing their jobs. The current situation with COVID-19 vaccines and mandates is an example of a system that is not reacting honestly to its mistakes. The transmission argument for vaccines is questionable, and even if we consider the argument of preventing severe disease or hospital support, the data does not support the idea that vaccines significantly impact hospitalizations. The games played with data manipulation and the untargeted nature of vaccines further undermine their effectiveness. In summary, having a strong foundation of values and emotional intelligence is essential, and challenging harmful systems requires careful consideration and understanding of the situation.

    • The importance of critical thinking and questioning information sourcesPrioritize critical thinking and questioning information sources to make informed decisions, align on values, and foster understanding, rather than relying solely on stated beliefs or political stances.

The focus on adhering to a specific set of beliefs, such as getting vaccinated, should not overshadow the importance of critical thinking and the ability to spot what others are missing. The conversation highlighted the need to align on values and have open conversations, rather than deducing values based on political stances or vaccine positions. It's crucial to question information sources and consider alternative perspectives to gain novel insights. The tendency to spot what others are missing is a key aspect of intelligence. By prioritizing critical thinking and the ability to depart from a slate of stated beliefs, we can make more informed decisions and bring people together. It's essential to be aware of our proxies and understand that they are not the ultimate source of truth. Instead, we should strive to transcend these proxies and engage in meaningful conversations to foster a better understanding of the world around us.

    • The limitations of our perspectives can hinder problem-solvingRecognizing and challenging our frames of reference can lead to new insights and solutions, but requires open communication, common values, and a willingness to step outside of comfort zones.

Our limited perspectives and inability to see beyond our current frame of reference can hinder our ability to find insights and solve complex problems. This issue is compounded by the incentives and cultural norms that keep us focused on what's immediately in front of us. The metaphor of being "framed" by a certain perspective is used to illustrate this concept. If we can learn to stand in different places and challenge our own frames, we may be able to see things from new angles and work together to address even the most difficult challenges. However, this requires a willingness to step outside of our comfort zones and potentially face discomfort and cognitive dissonance. Ultimately, the solution lies in fostering open and honest communication, recognizing common values, and working together to find solutions that show the humanity in each of us.

    • Personal experiences shaping perspectivesHumility, understanding biases, and open-mindedness are crucial for challenging deeply held beliefs, even if they come from respected figures. Criticizing others for lack of knowledge while ignoring our own limitations can hinder progress.

Personal experiences can significantly shape our perspectives and make us question our beliefs, even if those beliefs come from respected figures like Sam Harris. The speaker's own experience of injury and subsequent realization of where he might have ended up without it, contrasted with Harris' refusal to engage in difficult conversations despite his advocacy for them, highlights the importance of humility and understanding that one's own limitations and biases exist. The speaker also criticizes Harris for relying too heavily on appeals to authority and projecting his own lack of knowledge onto others, while ignoring the potential influence of powerful forces on the narrative he follows. Ultimately, the speaker encourages open-mindedness and the willingness to entertain alternative viewpoints, even if they challenge our deeply held beliefs.

    • Labeling Experts as Cranks or Grifters is SimplisticCarefully consider various perspectives, even if they challenge mainstream opinions, and avoid dismissing experts as cranks or grifters without proper examination. Remember that decision-making power lies with the individual and be aware of potential biases and incentives.

The labeling of experts as "cranks" or "grifters" based on disagreements with mainstream opinions can be a simplistic and potentially misleading approach. The complexity of health-related issues, including those related to COVID-19 and its responses, often requires careful consideration and evaluation of various perspectives. Even highly published and respected experts may hold dissenting views, and dismissing them as cranks without proper examination can be a disservice to understanding the full range of available information. It's essential to remember that the ultimate decision-making power lies with the individual, and that decision may be influenced by factors beyond just the expertise of the sources consulted. Additionally, it's important to be aware of potential biases and incentives that may influence the information we receive and the opinions we form. The world is nuanced, and a critical and open-minded approach to information is necessary for making informed decisions.

    • Embrace challenges with humility and opennessApproach new situations with humility, be open to new information, and acknowledge the complexity of the world

Life's challenges, including uncertain situations like new technologies or health interventions, can provide valuable lessons and help us grow. However, it's crucial to approach such situations with humility, recognizing that we don't have all the answers and that our understanding of the world is always evolving. It's essential to be open to new information and to rebuild relationships when possible, as human connection is a fundamental need. Additionally, it's important to remember that even in the face of potential harm, some people may have genuine experiences or concerns. It's not about agreeing with everyone but rather acknowledging the complexity of the world and the limitations of our own knowledge.

    • Costs of public health actions, including vaccines, come with adverse reactionsIt's important to acknowledge the costs of public health actions, including vaccines, and offer compassion to those experiencing adverse reactions, while remembering correlation does not always imply causation

Every action, including those aimed at improving public health like administering vaccines, comes with a cost. This cost can be measured in terms of the number and severity of adverse reactions experienced by individuals. It's essential to acknowledge these costs and consider them in the context of the overall benefits. Demonizing individuals who have been unfortunate enough to experience adverse reactions after vaccination is not justified. Instead, we should offer compassion and support to those going through difficult times. It's also important to remember that correlation does not always imply causation, and it's possible for individuals to mistakenly attribute their health issues to vaccines when other factors may be at play. Only those who deliberately lie about vaccine safety should be subject to ridicule, as they are actively harming those who have genuinely been injured. Overall, a thoughtful and empathetic approach is necessary when discussing vaccine safety and adverse reactions.

Anecdote in Science: The 224th Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

In this 224th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss animal behavior: the implications of an orangutan using a medicinal plant to treat a wound, and the one-off videos that we’ve all seen—of cats preventing toddlers from falling, of a beluga whale retrieving a woman’s phone. What does this say about the minds of these other organisms, and about us? Also: dog domestication, from wolves, but not from foxes. And: the New York Times publishes more insipid garbage about vaccine injury, Bret returns to the question of what safety means, and The Nation turns its back on its muckraking roots.

Never Alone: The 223rd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

In this 223rd in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss science and religion, materialism and other ways of understanding our world. Can analysis and quantification explain everything? Can narrative, intuition, and creativity? All are or should be part of the scientific process; science is incomplete with only one mode. We also discuss models, how they fail, how difficult they are to assess, and what one recent climate model has to say about the role of air pollution in Earth’s temperature. Enlightenment values require that we use our freedom to inquire about all things that we are curious about. Also: happy Beltane!

Why Darwin was Right: The 222nd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

Why Darwin was Right: The 222nd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

In this 222nd in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss evolution, and how we know that it is true. We discuss the different kinds of beliefs that people have—beliefs that attempt to reconcile with reality, vs beliefs that reconcile with social standing and comfort. If your beliefs put you on the outs with your friends, do you change your beliefs, or your friends? Are you willing to give up the cocktail party for reality? We also discuss research published in 2000 and funded by Fauci’s NIAID, which demonstrated that it was possible to make chimeric coronaviruses, swapping the spike protein from one to a different species entirely. Finally: sex-biased gene expression, in which genes are expressed differently in the two sexes, in anatomical systems as varied as brain, kidneys, and liver.

Arada bir Hindistan'a da uğrayıp çıkacağız. Kolay gelsin.

Ep. 30: The False Choice: Move Fast or Think Deeply

There is a false dichotomy between thinking deeply and moving fast. We are often presented with these as mutually exclusive choices and both have real advantages. But there is a way to do both at the same time--and it is a life changing insight (at least, it was for me).
