    Podcast Summary

    • Frustration with Democratic Party's shift to the leftWriter Katie Herzog criticizes Democrats for moving too far left to please media, concerns about 'walk away' movement, advocates for classical liberal values within the party

Katie Herzog, a writer and former editor at The Stranger, expressed her frustration with the Democratic party and its perceived failure to appeal to the voting populace by moving too far to the left to please the media establishment. She believes that the Democratic candidates' pivot to the left to gain media attention is a catch-22, as it does not resonate with the voters in key districts that determine the presidency. Herzog, who identifies as a reluctant Democrat, expressed her skepticism about the possibility of meaningful change within the party and her concern about the rise of the "walk away" movement, which she sees as a step towards the Republican party, rather than a solution. Instead, she advocates for old-school Democrats to stand up and push for a return to classical liberal values within the party.

    • Emotions and Personal Factors in Voting DecisionsPeople's voting choices can be influenced by emotional connections and personal biases, beyond policy disagreements or ideological differences.

The reasons some people vote for certain politicians go beyond policy disagreements or ideological differences. The interviewee, a Trump supporter, shared how his dislike for Hillary Clinton was deeply rooted in her perceived elitism and condescension. This personal animosity towards Clinton, which may include elements of sexism, influenced his vote despite his recognition that Trump doesn't genuinely represent the working class. This complex dynamic highlights the importance of understanding the emotional and psychological factors that drive voting decisions. Additionally, the conversation touched upon the power of media narratives and how they can shape public perception of political figures.

    • Failure of Democratic and Republican Parties to Represent the PeopleThe speaker critiques both parties for neglecting the interests of the common people, calls for a new 'other left' to promote progress, and emphasizes the importance of understanding classical liberal principles.

The speaker believes that both the Democratic and Republican parties have failed to represent the interests of the common people, leading to the election of Donald Trump. They criticize the Clintons for contributing to the Democratic party's turn away from working people, and argue that a new "other left" is needed to promote progress without repeating past mistakes. The speaker also emphasizes the importance of understanding classical liberal principles and the need for a sober discussion on how to move forward. They admire the speaker for staying true to their liberal beliefs while acknowledging the left's shortcomings. Overall, the conversation highlights the dissatisfaction with the current political landscape and the search for alternative solutions.

    • Understanding the purpose of humor as an adaptationHumor serves as a tool for navigating uncomfortable situations and reveals true meaning, but its purpose remains intriguing. Critical thinking and questioning the validity of findings, especially in sensitive societal contexts, is crucial.

Humor, as an ancient adaptation, serves as a complex tool for navigating uncomfortable situations. It provides a moment of whiplash when the true meaning is revealed, creating a sense of connection or division among individuals. The assumption that something is an adaptation, like humor, consciousness, religion, music, and even sexuality, is a valid one, but understanding its purpose remains an intriguing question. The replication crisis in social sciences, exemplified by the flawed blind orchestra study, has made it increasingly difficult to distinguish truth from fiction, leading to a blurred sense of reality for some, particularly in the context of climate change. Trust in scientists and the scientific method is essential, but it's important to remain critical and question the validity of findings, especially when they have significant societal implications.

    • Skepticism towards activist-filtered information and the reliability of scientific researchApproach scientific information with a critical mindset, considering potential biases and limitations, especially in fields where p-values are heavily relied upon, to ensure truthful findings and maintain trust in research.

The reliability of scientific research, particularly in fields where p-values are heavily relied upon, can be questionable due to various factors including the replication crisis and the economic competition within academia. The speaker, a former climate reporter, shares his skepticism towards activist-filtered information and expresses concern about the validity of studies with impressive results that may not have been subjected to rigorous evaluation or replication. The speaker also highlights the issue of job prospects in academia, which can lead to ethical compromises and prioritization of grant-winning research over truthful findings. This can potentially impact climate science as well. It's crucial to approach scientific information with a critical mindset and consider the potential biases and limitations that may exist.

    • Climate change concerns go beyond model-based predictionsObservable phenomena like retreating glaciers and methane craters, along with established scientific principles, provide compelling reasons to take climate change seriously.

The climate science debate is influenced by pervasive incentives that can cloud our understanding, leading to uncertainty about the reliability of models and predictions. However, there are other compelling reasons to be concerned about climate change beyond model-based predictions. For instance, the observable phenomena such as the retreat of glaciers and the discovery of methane craters in Siberia are clear signs of potential danger. The release of methane, a potent greenhouse gas, could lead to a runaway effect that could have catastrophic consequences. Additionally, the absence of philosophers of science in the debate can make it challenging to navigate the complexities of the issue. Instead of dismissing the concerns as a left-wing conspiracy, it's crucial to consider multiple lines of evidence and approach the issue with caution. The links in the chain that suggest the need to address climate change are more robust than some may think, and they don't solely rely on models. Instead, they are grounded in established scientific principles and observable phenomena. Therefore, it's essential to take the issue seriously and work towards finding solutions.

    • Our addiction to unsustainable activities is the root cause of the climate crisisAddressing the root cause of the climate crisis by transitioning to more sustainable practices benefits both the environment and the economy, while failing to act could result in catastrophic consequences for humanity.

The climate crisis is not the primary problem; it's a symptom of an underlying issue. We need to address the root cause, which is our addiction to unsustainable, profit-driven activities. This issue is not new, as our ancestors, who were also winners in the evolutionary sense, did not hesitate to use resources at their disposal. However, the current situation is different due to industrialization and automation, which have made resource exploitation more dangerous and destructive. It's essential to recognize that addressing the climate crisis and other sustainability issues will not only benefit the environment but also stimulate the economy. Ultimately, the earth will recover from human destruction, but the consequences for humanity could be catastrophic. Therefore, it's crucial to act now and transition to more sustainable practices for the betterment of future generations.

    • Striving for a better world despite the inevitability of death and extinctionWork towards a sustainable future, minimize suffering, and focus on quality of life for all individuals

While the universe and human existence may seem meaningless in the grand scheme of things, it's still worth striving to create a better world for future generations. The speaker acknowledges the inevitability of death and extinction, but also emphasizes the importance of making the most of the time we have and working towards a world where suffering is minimized. This can be achieved through sustainable living, technological advancements, and a focus on quality of life over quantity of population. Ultimately, the goal should be to create a world where every individual can experience the wonders and possibilities of life without facing intolerable suffering.

    • Transitioning to a sustainable energy future: A technological and political challengeAcknowledging the fear of the current energy crisis while maintaining hope for a sustainable future and addressing both the technological and political challenges is crucial for the shift towards fusion power

The shift towards a sustainable energy future, specifically fusion power, is crucial for addressing the unsustainability crisis we face, including the issue of nuclear energy and its risks. However, this transition is not only a technological challenge but also a political one, with debates around the future of nuclear energy and fusion power. Despite the potential benefits of fusion power, such as its safety and lack of long-term waste, it faces branding issues and opposition from various industries. To move forward, it's essential to acknowledge the fear of the current crisis while maintaining hope for a better future and working towards a solution that addresses both the technological and political aspects.

    • The importance of addressing Earth's challengesWhile considering other planets, remember Earth's significance and the importance of addressing its environmental issues. Focus on making a positive impact in the present.

While some people may focus on escapist fantasies like colonizing other planets, it's important to remember the value and urgency of addressing the issues on our own planet. The speaker expresses concern that figures like Elon Musk, who promote the idea of colonizing Mars, may influence people to overlook the pressing environmental challenges on Earth. The speaker emphasizes the beauty and significance of our planet and encourages finding a philosophical way to make peace with its imperfections. The speaker also reflects on the improbability and absurdity of our existence and the potential meaning it can bring to our everyday lives. In essence, the speaker encourages focusing on the present and the importance of our actions to make a positive impact on the planet.

    • Unexpected events led the speaker to their current roleStay true to your beliefs and values, embrace unexpected events, and find common ground with diverse perspectives to achieve success

Life's journey to success can be a combination of deliberate efforts and unexpected circumstances. The speaker in this conversation shares how they always aspired to work for a specific paper and managed to achieve that goal, but it wasn't a straightforward path. They attribute their position to a series of happenstance events, some positive and some negative, that led them there. Despite the unconventional route, they find themselves feeling natural and privileged to be part of the conversations that matter. The speaker also shares that they've been surprised by people they initially dismissed and found common ground with them. Additionally, they've noticed a trend of being invited to more heterodox platforms rather than mainstream or left-leaning media, which they find problematic as they'd like to engage in constructive dialogue with those who disagree with them. Overall, the speaker reflects on the importance of staying true to one's beliefs and values, even in the face of opposition, and recognizing the value of unexpected encounters and experiences.

    • Online discourse and reactions can skew perception of public opinionNegative feedback often gets more attention, leading to skewed perceptions and potentially harmful ad hominem attacks, especially on sensitive topics like sex and religion.

The way we engage in online discourse can be influenced by the reactions we receive, with negative feedback often gaining more attention than positive support. This dynamic can lead to a skewed perception of public opinion, as seen in the case of Yasmin Mohammed, whose book was criticized and even banned from advertising on Amazon, despite her experiences and views being in line with liberal values. The labeling of critics of Islam as racist or Islamophobic, while allowing criticism of other religions, further exacerbates this issue. Online interactions, whether from real or fake accounts, can have a significant impact on individuals and the broader conversation, often leading to ad hominem attacks and a focus on negative feedback. It's crucial to remember that these interactions are strategic and designed to steer the conversation, and it's essential to maintain a perspective that values freedom, independence, and the ability to challenge societal norms, especially when it comes to topics like sex and religion, which can be powerful and should be treated with respect.

    • Old, dormant accounts can be used negatively in online conversationsAnonymity allows old, inactive accounts to spread insults and derogatory labels, steering discussions away from intended topics, limiting open dialogue and creating echo chambers.

Online conversations can be steered negatively through the use of old, dormant accounts. These accounts, which may follow a large number of people but have few followers, can be used to spread insults and derogatory labels, such as "incel," to steer discussions away from their intended topics. The anonymity of these accounts allows users to make ad hominem attacks without repercussion. However, it's important to note that not all old accounts with few followers are hacked or used maliciously. Some users may simply not be active on Twitter or may not have a large following due to personal preference. To protect oneself from such attacks, some users, including public figures, mute notifications from non-followers or filter out critical comments. While this can create a more positive online experience, it also limits open dialogue and can create echo chambers. The use of such tactics raises questions about the ethics of online discourse and the role of anonymity in shaping public conversations.

    • Navigating online communities and filtering out toxicityBalancing exposure to diverse perspectives and protection from harmful influences is crucial for productive online conversations.

Navigating the online world and filtering through the noise to discern legitimate critique from unfair attacks is an ongoing challenge. Every community, regardless of its focus, is susceptible to toxicity. The necessity of gatekeeping to maintain productive conversations is a complex issue, as it risks excluding heterodox voices. However, the ease of disrupting conversations online and the prevalence of gatekeeping in some spaces necessitates a balance. Personal experiences and societal narratives can influence individual perspectives, potentially leading to regretful decisions. Ultimately, setting the "slider" for online engagement involves finding a balance between exposure to diverse perspectives and protection from harmful influences.

    • Understanding the Complexity of Gender Identity and TransitionRecognize the complexity of gender identity and transition, acknowledge that not everyone who presents differently identifies as trans, and engage in respectful and nuanced conversations to promote understanding and validation for all experiences.

The conversation around gender identity and transition is complex and multifaceted, with various perspectives and experiences. It's important to acknowledge that not everyone who presents in a non-standard way identifies as trans, and there is a need for adult solutions that acknowledge and validate all experiences. The authoritarian left's simplistic approach of labeling those who resist trans ideology as transphobes is problematic, as it overlooks the complexity and nuance of the issue. The tension between different groups within the trans community, such as old-school transsexuals and new-school transgenders, highlights the need for ongoing dialogue and understanding. It's crucial to approach this topic with an open mind and a willingness to engage in respectful and nuanced conversations.

    • Understanding Identity and PrivilegeApproach identity and privilege with empathy, respect individual experiences, remember everyone's journey is unique, and strive to learn from one another.

The complexities of identity and privilege should be approached with empathy and understanding, rather than judgment and intolerance. The speaker acknowledges the existence of unearned privilege, but argues that it should be used honorably instead of being given away or denied to others. The discussion touched upon the complexities of trans identity and the importance of respecting individual opinions and experiences. It's crucial to remember that everyone's journey is unique and that we should strive to learn from one another, rather than bullying or marginalizing those who hold different perspectives. The speaker also emphasized the importance of empathy, open-mindedness, and transformation in the face of criticism and adversity.

    • Natalie Wynn's Unique Perspective on Political IssuesYouTuber Natalie Wynn, a trans woman, offers unique insights into political issues through her visually engaging and insightful videos, lampooning various ideologies while maintaining high quality and originality, despite potential backlash from her fan base.

Natalie Wynn, a trans woman and creator of the YouTube channel "ContraPoints," offers a unique perspective on various political issues through her insightful and visually engaging videos. By voicing characters from different political ideologies, she provides insight into their beliefs while also lampooning them, making it hard to dismiss. Her work, which includes filmmaking and music, is remarkable for its high quality and originality. Wynn's position is challenging as she risks losing her radical trans right fan base while gaining a wider audience. However, her primary value lies in her insightful understanding of various political entities, making her an essential voice for the trans community and beyond. The trans community needs sane and insightful trans voices to counteract the negative narratives perpetuated by right-wing media on small issues, such as trans women in sports and pediatric transition.

    • Approaching Transgender Issues with Nuance and FactsMisconceptions about high murder rates of black trans women and the notion of a 'murder epidemic' should be challenged with facts and understanding, avoiding fear and misinformation. Focus on promoting acceptance, understanding, and factual information to foster a more inclusive society.

The ongoing debate surrounding transgender issues should be approached with nuance and factual understanding, rather than fear and misinformation. The discussion highlighted that the murder rates of black trans women are not disproportionately high compared to black males, and the notion of a "murder epidemic" is misleading. Furthermore, the comparison was drawn to past moral panics, such as the satanic panic of the 1980s and 1990s, where similar sentiments and forces were at play. It's essential to acknowledge the complexity of the issues and the potential harm caused by spreading false information. Instead, we should focus on promoting acceptance, understanding, and factual information to foster a more inclusive and compassionate society.

    • Understanding the Spread of Ideas and MisinformationIn the digital age, ideas and misinformation can spread rapidly due to human behavior and communication, with historical parallels to witch hunts and satanic panics. The Milgram experiment shows how people can be influenced by external forces, highlighting the importance of critical thinking and fact-checking.

Human behavior and communication, particularly in the digital age, can lead to cyclical trends and the spread of ideas, some of which may be based on misinformation or misunderstandings. This phenomenon, which can be compared to historical events like witch hunts and satanic panics, is driven by our evolutionary wiring and the viral nature of human connection. The Milgram experiment, which demonstrated the power of authority, offers insight into how people are susceptible to being persuaded by external forces. In some eras, individuals with a resistance to authority may be out of place, but in others, they may be essential for challenging the prevailing narrative and promoting truth. Ultimately, it's crucial for us to be aware of this dynamic and to strive for critical thinking and fact-checking in the face of new information and trends.

    • The Danger of Blind Adulation to Jordan Peterson's MessageWhile Peterson's messages promote independence and common sense, the potential for harm arises when his followers take his teachings out of context or misunderstand them, leading to a dangerous movement based on blind adulation. Encouraging critical thinking and understanding is crucial.

While Jordan Peterson may have well-intentioned messages promoting independence and common sense, the danger lies in the adulation and fandom of his followers. His fans may be drawn to his message, but they may not fully understand or implement the independent thinking he encourages. The potential for a harmful movement arises when a charismatic figure's message is taken out of context or misunderstood by a large following. It's crucial to be aware of this dynamic and to encourage critical thinking and understanding, rather than blind adulation. Additionally, Peterson's message, while generally positive, may not be progressive enough for some and could potentially be a step backwards for others. It's important to recognize the nuances and potential implications of his teachings.

    • Navigating the complexities of human behavior and resistanceUnderstanding the challenges of awakening resistance, especially in the context of authoritarianism and cancel culture, requires nuanced approaches and careful consideration.

The discussion revolves around the complexities of human behavior and the challenges of awakening the resistance in people, especially in the context of authoritarianism and cancel culture. The speakers agree that people are prone to herd mentality, which can lead to dangerous outcomes such as the Holocaust. However, they also acknowledge that it's not as simple as telling people to resist or be individuals. The ability to wake people up becomes more complex the more they are indoctrinated with received wisdom. The speakers express frustration with the narrative that those who have been canceled are simply wrong, and emphasize the importance of trust and open dialogue in navigating these issues. The discussion also touches on the limitations of professional networks and the potential dangers of waking people up without considering the consequences. Overall, the conversation highlights the need for nuanced understanding and careful consideration in addressing these complex issues.

    • Speaking out against injustice comes with risksBe truthful about risks, admit mistakes authentically, prepare for fallout, and commit to truth rather than personal gain.

The decision to speak out against injustice or cancel culture should not be made lightly, as there are real dangers and potential consequences. The speaker in this conversation emphasizes the importance of being truthful about these risks and not downplaying the challenges that come with standing up for oneself. They also highlight the importance of admitting when one is wrong, but doing so in a thoughtful and authentic way, rather than as a manipulative tactic. The speaker's personal experience with the media and the potential for being misrepresented underscores the importance of being prepared for the potential fallout and having a strong support system. Ultimately, the decision to speak out should be based on a deep commitment to truth and a willingness to face the consequences, rather than the potential for personal gain or glory.

    • Discussing the Importance of Daily Deadlines and Social Media PresenceWriting daily deadlines and maintaining a social media presence are essential for staying committed to creative pursuits and engaging with audiences.

John McDermott and the interviewee, Kitty Senn, had a lively and engaging conversation during which they discussed various topics, including the importance of writing daily deadlines and being active on social media. Kitty shared that she writes for The Stranger multiple times a week and has a daily deadline for her blog. She also mentioned her presence on Twitter as @kittyperzog. The conversation was described as enlightening and unpredictable, with Kitty promising to deliver wickedly funny content. Despite some disagreements and the use of strong language, they found common ground and enjoyed their interaction. Overall, the conversation emphasized the importance of staying committed to creative pursuits and engaging with audiences through various platforms.

Anecdote in Science: The 224th Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

Anecdote in Science: The 224th Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

In this 224th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss animal behavior: the implications of an orangutan using a medicinal plant to treat a wound, and the one-off videos that we’ve all seen—of cats preventing toddlers from falling, of a beluga whale retrieving a woman’s phone. What does this say about the minds of these other organisms, and about us? Also: dog domestication, from wolves, but not from foxes. And: the New York Times publishes more insipid garbage about vaccine injury, Bret returns to the question of what safety means, and The Nation turns its back on its muckraking roots.

Never Alone: The 223rd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

Never Alone: The 223rd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

In this 223rd in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss science and religion, materialism and other ways of understanding our world. Can analysis and quantification explain everything? Can narrative, intuition, and creativity? All are or should be part of the scientific process; science is incomplete with only one mode. We also discuss models, how they fail, how difficult they are to assess, and what one recent climate model has to say about the role of air pollution in Earth’s temperature. Enlightenment values require that we use our freedom to inquire about all things that we are curious about. Also: happy Beltane!

Why Darwin was Right: The 222nd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

Why Darwin was Right: The 222nd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

In this 222nd in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss evolution, and how we know that it is true. We discuss the different kinds of beliefs that people have—beliefs that attempt to reconcile with reality, vs beliefs that reconcile with social standing and comfort. If your beliefs put you on the outs with your friends, do you change your beliefs, or your friends? Are you willing to give up the cocktail party for reality? We also discuss research published in 2000 and funded by Fauci’s NIAID, which demonstrated that it was possible to make chimeric coronaviruses, swapping the spike protein from one to a different species entirely. Finally: sex-biased gene expression, in which genes are expressed differently in the two sexes, in anatomical systems as varied as brain, kidneys, and liver.
