The Lahaina Fire – Jeremy Lee Quinn on DarkHorse

    en-usAugust 19, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • Complexity and chaos of disaster response situationsDisaster response situations are complex and chaotic, requiring difficult decisions about resource allocation and prioritization. Journalists, like Jeremy Lee Quinn, can provide valuable insights into these situations, shedding light on the realities and importance of accountability.

Key takeaway from this conversation with Jeremy Lee Quinn, a photojournalist and broadcaster who reported on the fires in Lahaina, Maui, is the complexity and chaos of disaster response situations. The fires, which occurred in an extremely dry and windy condition, forced authorities to make difficult decisions about resource allocation. They had to deal with multiple fires, some larger than others, and prioritize accordingly. Quinn also noted that he, as a journalist, was often at the epicenter of major historical events, either by chance or deliberate effort. The fires in Lahaina were no exception, and the lack of transparency in the response efforts has left many questions unanswered. Despite the challenges, Quinn provided valuable insights into the situation, shedding light on the realities of disaster response and the importance of accountability.

    • Maui fire emergency: Discrepancy in evacuation ordersDespite misinformation on social media, there was no second evacuation order during the Maui fire emergency. The unpredictable nature of disasters highlights the importance of accurate information and effective resource management.

During the Maui fire emergency, there was a discrepancy regarding the timing of the evacuation orders. The speaker, a journalist, found no evidence of a second evacuation order in the afternoon, contrary to some Facebook posts suggesting self-evacuation. The fire spread rapidly, and the journalist personally experienced the destructive power of the winds during his reporting. The complexity of managing emergencies, especially in areas with limited access, can lead to calamities even with small amounts of incompetence. The journalist's personal account from August 8th, during the hours of the fire between 4 and 6 pm, illustrates the unpredictable nature of such disasters and the importance of prioritizing resources effectively.

    • Decentralized disaster response in West MauiCommunity resilience and volunteer efforts ensured people were taken care of during a decentralized disaster response in West Maui, despite confusion and reports of restricted access.

The disaster response in West Maui after the fire in Kohala Ranch involved a decentralized effort with various communities and volunteers distributing aid through seven distribution sites. The absence of official government presence led to some confusion and anecdotes of restricted access, but overall, the distribution of materials was functioning, and people were being provided for. The appearance of a cover-up or pretend rescue operation may stem from the lack of a centralized authority and the unique character of each distribution site. While there were reports of restricted access and undercounting of bodies, the distribution sites were well-stocked and open to all, with some led by the indigenous native Hawaiian community emphasizing sustainability and care for their people. Despite the challenges, the community's resilience and volunteer efforts ensured that people were being taken care of, and it was not a humanitarian crisis in that sense.

    • Surviving Disasters: Essential Materials and InformationDuring disasters, transparency and communication are essential to prevent distrust and anxiety. Conspiracy theories may emerge due to survival instincts, but collusion is less common in functioning civilizations.

During times of disaster and crisis, the distribution of essential materials and information becomes crucial for survivors. While organizations like FEMA and the Red Cross are present and providing aid, the lack of transparency and communication can lead to widespread distrust and anxiety among the affected population. The absence of proper information can hinder the healing process and make it difficult for people to understand the situation. Additionally, in the absence of a properly functioning civilization, humans have an inherent tendency to be suspicious and look for collusion or nefarious motives. This survival skill can unfortunately lead to the spread of conspiracy theories. However, it's important to remember that there are typically three options: the disaster was planned, it was an immense seismic failure, or there was collusion. In the functioning civilization, collusion is less common due to accountability and transparency. But in the current era of capture and disrupted systems, collusion can be more prevalent and harder to detect.

    • Potential for collusion or exploitation during disastersDuring disasters, consider the possibility of collusion or exploitation, but maintain a healthy dose of skepticism due to the complexity of orchestrating such events and the prevalence of incompetence.

During times of great misfortune, it's not unreasonable to consider the possibility of collusion or opportunistic behavior. However, it's important to note that the opportunity for such actions might not be as clear as the willingness to take advantage of a disaster. The recent COVID-19 pandemic serves as a reminder of the potential for collusion at various levels. In the case under discussion, there are possibilities of collusion, pure incompetence, or a combination of both. The likelihood of a planned disaster is skeptical due to the difficulty of orchestrating such an event and covering it up. On the other hand, the willingness to take advantage of a disaster for personal gain is evident. The destruction of Lahaina, a historic town, raises questions about the potential for land speculation and other forms of exploitation. Yet, the level of incompetence displayed in handling the disaster makes it hard to believe that it was a deliberate act. Ultimately, it's essential to consider all possibilities but maintain a healthy dose of skepticism.

    • Effective communication crucial during emergenciesMiscommunication and lack of clear instructions during emergencies can lead to confusion and dangerous situations, emphasizing the importance of effective communication and clear instructions from emergency response teams

Effective communication during emergencies is crucial. The director's decision not to trigger the tsunami warning system in Lahaina during a fire was based on his concern of causing unnecessary panic, but the evacuees believed they knew where to go due to the obvious signs of the fire and impending danger. The absence of sirens and text alerts during the early stages of the emergency caused delays in evacuation, leading to potential risks. Miscommunication and lack of clear instructions can result in confusion and dangerous situations, especially in areas prone to natural disasters. It's important for emergency response teams to have accurate information and be able to effectively communicate with the public to ensure timely and appropriate actions are taken.

    • Transparency during crises: Importance vs potential for abuseTransparency is crucial during crises, but the power to withhold information can be abused. The public has a right to know, even if the news may be disheartening.

Transparency is crucial during times of crisis, even if the news is difficult to share. The underreporting of deaths in the aftermath of a disaster can be used as an excuse to hide the truth, but earnest attempts to shield people from worse news should not be confused with malicious intent. However, during sensitive times, the power to withhold information can easily be abused. The public has a right to know, even if the news may be disheartening. The lengthy and arduous process of identifying and reporting deaths in the aftermath of a disaster does not justify withholding information. Ultimately, the importance of transparency outweighs the potential for disheartening news, as the power to hide the truth will always be susceptible to abuse.

    • The West Maui wildfire: Resilience and vulnerabilitiesThe West Maui wildfire showcased the community's resilience and unity, but also highlighted the importance of respecting the land and effective communication during emergencies.

The aftermath of the West Maui wildfire revealed both the resilience and the vulnerabilities of the community. The initial response was met with frustration and a sense of isolation, with West Maui being cut off from the rest of the island. However, the community rallied together, showing an outpouring of aloha and support for one another. The incident also highlighted the importance of respecting the land and the indigenous people's wishes. The story went viral, with many sharing messages of unity and perseverance. However, there were also concerning reports of people being trapped on Front Street and being forbidden to leave, leading to tragic consequences. It's crucial to acknowledge the complexity of the situation and the need for effective communication and logistical understanding during emergencies. The story is not just about a cartoonish villain but about people working hard to survive and rebuild. It's a reminder of our shared humanity and the importance of coming together during challenging times.

    • Limited evacuation options during Lahaina brush firesThe unexpected Lahaina brush fires left residents with few evacuation options due to the town's layout and climate conditions, resulting in a dangerous situation.

During the Lahaina brush fires, the town's layout and the climate conditions left residents with limited options for evacuation, which unfortunately led to a significant backup on Front Street and made it impassable. The town's only highway, Honua Pilani Highway, had downed power lines, and the bypass was the only other viable route. However, police were reluctant to send people through the power lines or towards the fire on the bypass, leaving the northbound evacuation scenario with few good options. The interviewee noted that despite the risks, some people still chose to take the highway through the power lines as the quickest escape route. Ultimately, the town's infrastructure and the unexpected fire situation created a dangerous situation with limited escape options for residents.

    • Journalist stays committed to uncovering the truth beyond official narrativeDetermined journalist leaves press convoy to report on West Maui wildfires, uncovers nuanced stories and provides important perspective for public

Journalist Jeremy Lee Quinn's determination and persistence in reporting on the aftermath of the West Maui wildfires led him to uncover stories that went beyond the official narrative. Despite facing challenges and initial resistance from the press convoy, Quinn's instincts led him to believe that the real story was with the affected community. He made the decision to leave the convoy and head to West Maui, becoming the only reporter on the ground during the isolation. The stories he uncovered, which he published on his Instagram, provided a more nuanced and important perspective for the public to learn from. Quinn's experience underscores the importance of journalists staying committed to the truth, even when the official narrative may be incomplete or misleading.

Science Friction: The 226th Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

In this 226th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss a new breakthrough in plant genetics: polyploid potatoes and corn from Ohalo Genetics, which are claimed to double the harvest from individual plants. Beginning with a discussion of naturally occurring polyploidy in other species, including frogs, we analyze the discussion of Ohalo’s new products with an evolutionary lens. Is it possible that biotechnology can evade trade-offs, or is this utopian thinking in the corporate world? Why do so many mistakes of modernity come in the form of people accustomed to complicated systems, applying their knowledge to complex systems? Finally: does Terrence Howard (recently on Joe Rogan) have a predictive model, or is he just blowing smoke?

In this 224th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss animal behavior: the implications of an orangutan using a medicinal plant to treat a wound, and the one-off videos that we’ve all seen—of cats preventing toddlers from falling, of a beluga whale retrieving a woman’s phone. What does this say about the minds of these other organisms, and about us? Also: dog domestication, from wolves, but not from foxes. And: the New York Times publishes more insipid garbage about vaccine injury, Bret returns to the question of what safety means, and The Nation turns its back on its muckraking roots.

In this 223rd in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss science and religion, materialism and other ways of understanding our world. Can analysis and quantification explain everything? Can narrative, intuition, and creativity? All are or should be part of the scientific process; science is incomplete with only one mode. We also discuss models, how they fail, how difficult they are to assess, and what one recent climate model has to say about the role of air pollution in Earth’s temperature. Enlightenment values require that we use our freedom to inquire about all things that we are curious about. Also: happy Beltane!

Why Darwin was Right: The 222nd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

Why Darwin was Right: The 222nd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

In this 222nd in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss evolution, and how we know that it is true. We discuss the different kinds of beliefs that people have—beliefs that attempt to reconcile with reality, vs beliefs that reconcile with social standing and comfort. If your beliefs put you on the outs with your friends, do you change your beliefs, or your friends? Are you willing to give up the cocktail party for reality? We also discuss research published in 2000 and funded by Fauci’s NIAID, which demonstrated that it was possible to make chimeric coronaviruses, swapping the spike protein from one to a different species entirely. Finally: sex-biased gene expression, in which genes are expressed differently in the two sexes, in anatomical systems as varied as brain, kidneys, and liver.

    Fighting Misinformation With Science Journalism

    Fighting Misinformation With Science Journalism
On December 31, 2021, The Joe Rogan Experience podcast on Spotify posted an episode with an interview with physician Dr. Robert Malone full of misinformation about the Covid-19 vaccine. This sparked outrage, a letter from a group of medical professionals, scientists and educators to Spotify and a series of creators pulling their content from the platform. Science Vs., a podcast produced by Gimlet Media which is owned by Spotify, decided to take a stand too.

The UFO Hearing - What Happened? What’s Next? - Guests : Ross Coulthart & Bryce Zabel
A congressional subcommittee heard sworn testimony last week from three impressive witnesses about dramatic, well-documented UFO encounters, classified UFO programs, and world changing evidence of non-human intelligence allegedly hidden from the public. Congress and the rest of the world were blown away by the testimony of distinguished military aviators CDR David Fravor and Lt. Ryan Graves, and by the explosive revelations from high-level (former) intelligence official David Grusch. How did the hearing come together? What happened behind the scenes? And most importantly, what happens next? Joining Jeremy and George for a roundtable discussion are two award-winning journalists and podcast producers Ross Coulthart and Bryce Zabel. Episode 13: March 13-16, 2011

    Episode 13: March 13-16, 2011
It was the show that tried to address some post-budget blues, that generally saw Wayne Swan's financial plan received like a lead balloon. So the show this week did indulge in some obligatory money talk: both in terms of the dated revenue policies enacted back in 1969 which came with the last serious copyright law amendment; seeing commercial radio in the country pay a minimal 1% of revenue allocated to music airplay, as well as the next Big Thing from the bag of tricks belonging to Senator Stephen Conroy. Plus Annie Wylie meets the latest in grassroots online campaigners:the resulting site started up by a group of socially conscious late teens and early twenties guys, yopinion shouldn't just be dismissed as get up in their pyjamas... And Ellie Schneider takes us down a nostalgic path for History Week down South Australia way, in a newer and fresher way thanks to ABC radio.
