Julian Sands (Warlock, Boxing Helena, Warlock: The Armageddon)

Julian Sands (Warlock, Boxing Helena, Warlock: The Armageddon)

We've always loved Julian Sands, and were saddened to hear of his disappearance and the revelation of his passing in 2023. To celebrate his life and career, we discuss a personal favorite, along with a pair of campier entries that, if nothing else, are fun to laugh about.

What happens when a warlock escapes the clutches of death, travels through a portal three centuries into the future, to locate three parts of The Grand Grimoire to undo creation? Well, you'd better believe that a determined witch-hunter follows to try to stop him! Julian Sands is Warlock (1989)!

Not into warlocks and all that stuff? Well, how about Julian Sands as an infuriatingly meek surgeon who opportunistically uses a hit-and-run accident to imprison, and physically alter,  the woman of his dreams? Probably not a particularly healthy thing to do. It's a story of obsession and possession, with some questionable acting. But hey, if Boxing Helena (1993) is a match for your fetish, you do you.

And then from there, if you thought that the acting in Boxing Helena was bad, get ready for some of the most remarkably poor acting you have ever seen from a complete cast. Thankfully, Julian Sands returns as the warlock, the one marginal bright spot. Though it probably would have helped if these actors had some decent dialogue to work with. However, as it stands, Warlock: The Armageddon (1993) is probably best used as a device to torture your enemies.

    Warlock: The Armageddon (w/ Tighe)

    Warlock: The Armageddon (w/ Tighe)

The coming of the Eclipse marks the end of our "Spooky Penis Season" but as the runes need collected, the druids gather the sparkly Disney juice, and a Sands is born. Yeah, that's right! We're covering one of the late Julian Sands seminal roles as the eponymous WARLOCK! As a trilogy of films, Julian Sands plays the WARLOCK in the first two movies, alongside Richard E. Grant in the original Steve Miner film and Chris Young in the Anthony Hickox sequel. This is the film that we're uncovering this time, in WARLOCK: THE ARMAGEDDON! And we brought a friend, Tighe, ready to speak over "the rudest that ever troubled daylight!" in the most congratulatory and nostalgic episode in a long while. It's a shame that not only is Julian no longer with us but within this month, Anthony, the Director, is sadly no longer with us. Rest in Peace Kings!

With the unfortunate passing of Julian Sands, we wanted to honor this incredible and magnetic actor by releasing a special Patreon episode where we covered 1989's WARLOCK with the film's #1 fan and Returning Champion Megan Sunday (Let’s Get Weirding podcast)! Along the way, we dig into the film's hostile attitude toward cats, stay on the lookout for a Steve Miner Butt Shot, learn to use a purse like a Dutch Oven, and generally lust after the hotness that is Julian Sands!! All this, plus we examine the Warlock's complicated relationship to windows, Megan opens up about the kinds of smut she enjoys reading, and Patrick finally explains what the Santa Ana winds are to Gena!! We've conjured a good one out of the Patreon vault for you today!!

Episode 230: Chattin' about Chattanooga Film Festival

Episode 230: Chattin' about Chattanooga Film Festival

When we spoke about the disappearance of Julian Sands in January , we took for granted that we would be found. Regrettably, his remains were found this week. He was a great actor who will be missed.

We admit it. There has been too much talk about comic book movies on this show lately. But the casting of Superman and Lois Lane is impossible to ignore. We give our opinions on the new actors and what it means for the DC Extended Universe.

It has been a while since we talked about cryptids. Our first review from Chattanooga is a look at America’s most famous mythical beast. At least, that is what it sounds like. Can you have a movie called The Bigfoot Trap and have no Bigfoot?

That is not the case here, but it sure does come close. Instead of being a story about the creature, the film focuses on its two main characters. It is a mixed bag that comes together in one of the best endings we have seen this year. But is it enough to save the movie?

We love found footage movies. The two of us are not the biggest fans of the term “POV movie”, but that does not take away from our enjoyment of the sub-genre. (We are just cranky old men who have a problem when it comes to change.)

Mind Body Spirit appealed to us because it is classic found footage with a modern sensibility. There are some creepy moments, some pretty neat gore, and yes, a computer cam. The film did a lot to impress us. So what stopped it from being something special?

YNFA 039: Warlock, or One Grimoire With Feeling

Salt your whips and bite your own tongues as we conger up some deep-rooted childhood issues and love of receding hairlines with 1989's Warlock! Did Julian Sands use his devil powers to coif the perfect hair? Was the aging makeup over-the-top bad or was that how the 1980s saw women over 40? And how long exactly is the amount of time to safely carry around a set of eyeballs? The answers to these questions and many more are most likely buried deep within the lining in Richard E. Grant's fur suit.

Leider müssen wir auch über Gunther, dem reichsten Hund der Welt, aufklären. Aber am Ende gibt es wieder ein Baby, also ist die Hot Pink Welt in Ordnung!

    Episode 2 - A Room with a View

    Episode 2 - A Room with a View

It’s 1908. Europe is at peace. The upper-middle class is living carefree.
Now, picture Italy, its warmth, its sunlight-bathed landscapes.
Picture Florence and a young handsome couple.
Picture England’s countryside with green pastures and people playing feather ball.

You’re now immersed in the setting of a beautiful story about love, romance, society expectations, heart’s desires, and intrigues.

You’re watching: “A room with a view”! A timeless movie with a message that still speaks to us and to our hearts, a movie that marked our identity as young girls living in a completely contrasting world yet feeling the same constraints as the characters in the story.

Join us on our first deep-dive review of this wonderful film, an absolute classic in the genre, as we go through the cast, the story, why we love it, and what we love in it.

***Spoiler alert! While reviewing this film we go through key scenes and may reveal the ending, so be warned of spoilers!***

    Bad Romance: Warlock 2

    Bad Romance: Warlock 2

Tonight’s movie is Warlock 2, officially known as WARLOCK: THE ARMAGEDDON. A soft reboot of a sequel. Everyone considers it a sequel, however, it changes the origin story of the Warlock, and it disregards Warlock Part 1, so one deduces that this is a completely different Warlock all together.

Every 600 years, Satan’s Son has a chance to destroy the world if he gets his bastard hands on 6 magical stones protected by 6 druids.

6-6-6. There are also 6 signs of the Armageddon that signal to the Druids that the Anti-Christ is on his way.

A pair of predestined teens are chosen to duel the Warlock as a special class of druids called druid warriors, and just so the audience knows, all the mythology in this movie is total BS from the imagination of Kevin Rock, the screenwriter.   In history, yes there were druids.  There were armed bodyguards called Gothwella that had some relationship with druid factions but none of all the stuff in this movie.

And the director has some beefy horror credits - it is Anthony Hickox who did Waxwork 1, and 2 as well one of our favorites Hellraiser 3, Full Eclipse, and also the horror-comedy Sunset: Vampires in Retreat.  He is a cult director.

After we highlight some home video headlines we’ll drop our first impressions of Warlock 2.

    • Have you guys tried this Coke n Coffee thing?
    • Nick found a great game emulator … he was playing Warlock SNES on it
    •  Kong will use telepathy in the new movie (which he did in cartoons)
    • Cloris Leachman died. She won an oscar and was really funny.  She was in at least 2 movies with bad romances The Last Picture Show and its sequel Texasville.

Our first impressions of Warlock 2 include:

    • “So much fun. Better than Warlock 1.”
    • “Commit. It’s awesome.”
    • “Very disappointed.”
    • “I got to find this movie after watching teaser.”

Some of our favorite bits from Warlock 2 include:

    • The unnatural Warlock birth
    • The Piccasso kill
    • All the more horrific stuff in act one
    • The elevator kill

Since we are running a bad romance theme this month that includes bad relationships we analysed this movie and perhaps, the best relationship in this movie might be the Warlock’s connection to the magic rocks, but the worst one might be between the 2 main characters who are supposed to be in love!
