    Carmenere

    Carmenere

    Midweek Mention... Sideways

    Midweek Mention... Sideways

Directed by Alexander Payne from a screenplay written by himself and collaborator Jim Taylor (I NOW PRONOUNCE YOU CHUCK AND LARRY would you believe it), 2004's SIDEWAYS is a comedy about middle-age, depression and alcoholism. Miles Raymond (Paul Giamatti) is a divorced wine aficionado and unpublished writer of a terrible sounding semi-autobiographical novel who takes best friend and former television star Jack (Thomas Hayden Church) on a road trip through California wine country ahead of Jack's impending marriage. Though his friend focuses on one final fling with wine pourer Stephanie (Sandra Oh) before getting hitched more than he does sampling the best the Santa Ynez Valley has to offer, Miles finds something deeper in the vineyards with Maya (Virgina Madsen). Giamatti has a relatable everyman charm about him which allows you to empathise with and even forgive him no matter how badly he disgraces himself which includes stealing from his own mother while fellow Spider-Man villain Thomas Hayden Church somehow manages to find some depth in the vacuous Peter Pan Syndrome suffering Jack. Character actor M.C. Gainey's penis almost steals the movie but it's the thoughtful themes about maturity, aging, male friendships and the need for patience to nurture people in relationships which lingers on the palate.

Holiday Movie and Wine Pairings! (How to Pair Wine and Movies, What is Mulled Wine, What makes a Holiday movie a classic)

Who doesn’t love a good Holiday movie? We know we do! And we also love wine, so in this episode we marry (or is it merry?!?) two of our favorite things and tell you about some fantastic Holiday movie and wine pairings. We choose three films - one old classic, one new classic, and one controversial pick - and pair them with three wines. Well, actually, one of the wines is used as a base for something we have never done before: Mulled Wine. Learn about what Mulled Wine is, our approach to pairing movies and wine, what our criteria are for choosing a Holiday movie classic, and what we think of the wines we paired with the movies in the tasting section of the episode. Overall, we think pairing Holiday movies and wine is a perfect Holiday treat, and we think we have found some great ideas for you - and maybe some inspiration for creating a Holiday wine and movie pairing of your own! Wines reviewed in this episode: Costco Kirkland Signature Rosé Prosecco, 2020 Red Rooster Winery Merlot, and 2018 Blackboard Red Wine by Matthews.

    F that Wine: Merlot

    F that Wine: Merlot

The Wine Pair returns to the F that Wine series, facing down their fear of Merlot. Let’s just say that one of the three wines they taste gets a 2/10 rating, proving to be a terrible wine, definitely not worth your time, and clearly deserving its entry into this series. Truly and honestly, F that Wine! Joe and Carmela briefly discuss the movie Sideways and Paul Giamatti’s famous Merlot quote, try to unpack Joe’s obsession with security cameras and video doorbells, and taste and review some reasonably priced and easy to find Merlots. Wines in this episode include a 2017 Chateau Ste. Michelle Indian Wells Merlot, a 2019 Bogle Vineyards Merlot, and a 2019 Dark Horse Merlot.

Wines To Find, Ep 90: 2021 Fall Wine Trends

Wines: Radley & Finch Chenin Blanc & Chateau Tour D'Auron Bordeaux Supérieur

Welcome to Fall, Y'all!! In this episode, we talk about two wines that are on the MOVE - to shopping shelves near you!

At the beginning of any new decade, change in  trends  is inevitable. In 2021, that change is in  full swing across many industries, including wine. Those changes have been compounded by 2020 harvest issues (CA and Australian wildfires, etc) and Covid-caused supply chain woes. With all this fluctuation, we are forecasting these two varietals  - Chenin Blanc and Merlot (specifically, Bordeaux based) - will be featured more and more on shopping shelves this fall.

Listen as we re-visit our conversation with fourth generation wine industry insiders, Angelina and Alecia Mondavi, as they discuss their delight at being able to source Chenin Blanc grapes to harken back and honor their grandfather, Peter Mondavi, who pioneered Chenin Blanc's heyday mid-(last)-century  as well as our conversations with Renée Sferrazza and Bruce Prothro of Prothro Wines discussing  Merlot's "bad rap" from the movie Sideways. Despite the early aughts diss,  Merlot packs a supple, velvety flavor punch that compliments many a fall meal.

Listen today for tips on the best value regions, food pairings and more on these two crowd-pleasing varietals that are perfect for you fall gatherings.

Three Days with My Mentor Patricia Norins: Part 1

Three Days with My Mentor Patricia Norins: Part 1

Recently I spent three days all about strategy with my mentor, Patricia Norins. I have been working with her for 7 or 8 years. In this episode, I am sharing three of the seven lessons I learned over the course of this meeting. I am sharing behind-the-scenes takeaways that are relatable but also really personal. I am drinking a 2014 Merlot from Mount Palomar Winery, located in Temecula. Cheers! Let’s get into those lessons.

Lesson One: You have to make time for strategy.

Oftentimes you schedule the meeting, you prep, you attend, and suddenly 15 minutes in you're talking about logistics and processes and everything BUT strategy. Talking strategy and making time for it is such a smart idea for a business. This is such a crucial time for growth where you can explore goals and decide the avenues that are right for you. We used SWOT analysis to divide and decide the goals that are best to pursue.  I created a theme of three words that guided my strategy meeting. Scale. Evolve. Diversify.

Lesson Two: Start the meeting thinking big, then work backward.

I highly recommend creating the agenda and prepping for the meeting structure beforehand. I originally had planned to start, day one, where are we at? Day two, where do we wanna go? Patricia suggested we flip that. On day one we talked about goals with the sky's the limit, nothing is unattainable, and then follow up with day two on the day to day and now. You get so caught in the weeds in the logistics of discussing where you're at and what's working and what's not working that it can be hard to pause and start being expansive with goal setting. Going high with your thinking and then bringing it down can help you set new goals AND the steps to attain them from where you’re at.

Lesson Three: Give space to create and don’t rush the process.

A tip from my three days is to switch up the environment, we were moving locations from my house to dinner and so on, but keeping the conversation going. I had been feeling so deflated lately with the show and I was just trying to figure out what direction I am going next. Patricia encouraged me to allow myself to set the goal to not monetize the show for the rest of this year or even next year. This opportunity to just enjoy and have fun felt right. Through this space of freedom to create and grow, I feel like I can go slow and create something even better.

These were three of my seven lessons from my three days with my mentor, Patricia Norins. Listen in next week for the remaining four because I definitely saved the best for last!

    What's Inside:

    • Behind the scenes with my mentor.
    • Three of the seven lessons in business.
    • Making time for strategy.
    • Start your meeting thinking big.
    • Give space to create.

    I’m Not Anxious, I’m Excited

    I’m Not Anxious, I’m Excited

Some stuff came up for me on my vacation surrounding anxiety. We are back from Maui and I started to have some serious anxiety come up during our trip. I am not sure if it's getting worse as I am getting older or it's all that is going on in the world, but it's at a high level for me right now.

have some serious anxiety come up during our trip. I am not sure if it's getting worse as I am getting older, or it's all that is going on in the world, but it's at a high level for me right now.

During this trip I took a social media and contact break, I turned off all my notifications and hid the icons. This made me so hyper aware of how many times I picked up my phone and even gave me FOMO because I was so concerned with what was going on without me. This is coming home with me, though, I really want to change my habits and change the way I interact with my socials. I can't control the content I see, and it's possible the things coming up are creating another source of fear and anxiety for me, that was also prevalent on my vacation.

Some anxiety came up on our vacation. It was coming up out of nowhere in some ways. I was getting physical symptoms like sweaty palms and nervous stomach, which would even cause more fear for me. On night one, I started getting anxious about the water and the way it was making me feel and being in the waves. The anxiety was so fierce that It started to restrict my feelings and desire to go to the beach during our trip.

When I brought my concerns up to Dustin, he challenged my feelings by saying, “Don’t look at this as anxiety, look at it as excitement, you're excited to go into the water”. I found this really interesting and started swapping this word surrounding statements of fear or anxiety I have in a variety of scenarios. I am excited to be in the water, I am excited about what people think of me. This made a lot of sense to me and I really feel like this mindset is going to work, even if it's going to take practice and effort.

I plan on seeing a therapist and I feel like it's a really healthy thing to do, in order to get to the deeper issues. However, I feel like breath work and a mindset shift can really be the start of changing my anxiety and not looking at it as fear. In my research, I found that fear and anxiety are really the same thing. Fear is a feeling in response to a real thing happening, and anxiety is the same feeling in response to imagination.

I am not afraid, I am not anxious… I am excited. I really can't wait to speak more on this and on the effect of changing my social media habits. If you really relate to what I shared today, or it resonated with you, and you want to reach out, I'd love to hear from you! Just email cheers@crystaluncorked.com, you’re not alone.

    What's Inside:

    • Anxiety on my vacation.
    • Strategies and advice for anxiety.
    • How are fear and anxiety different?

New York Reds: Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir and Red Friends

New York Reds: Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir and Red Friends

Continuing their journey through New York, John and Sara take a deeper dive into the red wines grown across the state in search of an elusive flagship variety. The Thieves make the call that New York's signature red grape must surely be cabernet franc, even if their wine producing friends are reluctant to say it themselves. Merlot may be more widely planted but it remains a Long Island specialty, pinot noir demands ultra-specific sites, cool syrah shows great promise but lacks critical mass for now, blaufränkisch performs admirably but is a mouthful to say (and its synonym, Lemberger,  is not particualrly attractive), and grenache, well, remains quixotic at best. One thing's for sure, New York winemakers don't like to be boxed in, which is why we see such tremendous diversity in the varieties planted and wine styles emerging from the state's 7 distinctive wine regions.

Our guests this episode are Josh Wig, co-owner of Lamoreaux Landing, a family-owned cabernet franc specialist located on the east side of Seneca Lake of the Finger Lakes, also specialists in grape-fed venison, Master Sommelier Christopher Bates, co-owner of Element Winery in the Finger Lakes,  a high-intervention cook and low-intervention winemaker,  and Christopher Tracy of Channing Daughters on Long Island, who talks field blends and the importance of diversity and expanding along with the universe.  Join us with a glass of cabernet franc, merlot, pinot noir or Lemberger (scratch that, blaufränkisch) in hand as we discuss the where and the how of the reds that New York does best.
