#94: Is it Later Than We Think? (Bret Weinstein & Heather Heying DarkHorse Livestream)

    en-usAugust 28, 2021

    Podcast Summary

    • Exploring the Benefits of Vivobarefoot Shoes and Natural Foot FunctioningVivobarefoot shoes promote natural foot function, strengthen foot muscles, and provide better tactile feedback. Traditional cushioned shoes can negatively impact foot health. Vivobarefoot's commitment to sustainability sets them apart, and Omax Cryofreeze can help manage pain.

During this podcast episode, the hosts discussed the importance of allowing our feet to function naturally through the use of Vivobarefoot shoes. These shoes are designed to mimic barefoot walking, providing natural stability, better tactile feedback, and enabling the strengthening of foot muscles. The hosts also emphasized the negative impact of traditional cushioned shoes on foot health and how Vivobarefoot's approach can contribute to a healthier lifestyle. Additionally, they highlighted the company's commitment to sustainability and using natural, bio, and recycled materials. Another topic touched upon was pain, with the hosts acknowledging its importance as a safety mechanism but also addressing chronic pain that serves no purpose and can be annoying. The sponsor Omax Cryofreeze was introduced as a potential solution for managing pain.

    • Understanding the importance of the physical worldRegularly engaging with the physical world and recognizing close calls can help us avoid assessing reality based on social responses.

It's important to recognize that reality isn't solely based on social constructs or opinions, but rather grounded in the physical world. This concept was discussed in relation to the chapter on adulthood from the upcoming book "A Hunter Gatherer's Guide to the 21st Century." Using the example of Wile E. Coyote from Looney Tunes, it was pointed out that people sometimes believe they can change underlying reality by altering opinions or perspectives. However, this belief is flawed, as seen when Wile E. Coyote ignores the laws of physics until he recognizes they apply. To avoid becoming someone who assesses the world based on social responses rather than analysis, regularly engaging with the physical world and understanding the value of close calls are recommended strategies. The current higher education system, steeped in postmodernism, can make this challenging, as it often doubts our ability to perceive the physical world. While postmodernism has some valuable contributions, such as acknowledging sensory biases and the use of power in institutions, most modern instances have gone too far and lost credibility.

    • Postmodernism's Harmful Effects on Various SectorsPostmodernism's belief that reality is socially constructed can be confusing and contradicts our experiences in the physical world. Engaging with the physical world provides a corrective to misconceptions and offers opportunities for strength and wisdom.

Postmodernism and its beliefs, which originated in academia, have spread beyond education and are causing harm in various sectors, including tech, schools, and media. A postmodernist perspective that all reality is socially constructed is confusing and contradicts our experiences in the physical world. Contrary to this belief, physical outcomes don't change based on our desires. Our perception of the world is influenced by our experiences and movement, making it more accurate and integrated. We need both freedom of expression and exploration to learn and grow, and nature offers opportunities for strength and wisdom. Humans are evolved to be antifragile, and engaging with the physical world provides a corrective to misconceptions, such as the idea that all of reality is a social construct or that life can be perfectly safe. Local practitioners, like the Costa Rican villager who saved our lives, often have valuable, ecologically-sound knowledge that may differ from academic explanations but are just as useful.

    • Avoiding delusions and misunderstandings through connection to realitySeeking honest feedback from the natural world can help prevent dangerous consequences and promote growth.

Seeking out physical reality and seeking feedback from the natural world can help us avoid delusions and misunderstandings. The excerpt emphasizes that trying to manipulate or coerce reality to fit our desires can lead to dangerous consequences, as seen in recent events like the situation in Afghanistan. The importance of acknowledging and learning from our mistakes is crucial for growth and progress. The industrial-strength campaign to shift the measurement of reality to reflect well on our beliefs can hinder our ability to correct our trajectory. A more honest and realistic assessment of our power and capabilities in the world can help us make better decisions and avoid rude awakenings. The origins of this issue can be traced back to the intentions behind compulsory schooling, which aimed to create a population that was easily controlled and asked fewer questions.

    • Questioning authority and understanding motivationsQuestioning authority and demanding transparency and accountability in decision-making processes is crucial, especially in matters of great importance to avoid dangerous errors and potential capture.

Relying on unchecked authority as if it were expert scientific knowledge can be dangerous, especially in matters of great importance. The example given was the handling of the Afghanistan situation by those in power, which was described as "cargo cult science" – the appearance of science without the substance. This relationship between authority and truth can lead to propaganda and eventual capture, with potentially disastrous consequences. The speaker emphasized the importance of being able to question and understand the motivations of those in power, and the need for transparency and accountability in decision-making processes. The speaker also raised the concern that similar errors could be occurring in other areas, such as COVID policy, and urged caution and critical thinking. In summary, the key takeaway is the importance of questioning authority and demanding transparency and accountability in decision-making processes, particularly in matters of great importance.

    • Argentinian healthcare workers study raises concerns due to lack of data transparencyStudy's validity uncertain without access to raw data, researchers should prioritize data sharing to maintain trust and credibility in scientific community

The scientific community places a high value on transparency and accessibility of research data. A recent study on Argentinian healthcare workers, published by Carvallo et al., has raised concerns due to the researchers' unwillingness to share the dataset, despite standard scientific practices. The study reported extraordinary results, but the lack of access to the raw data makes it difficult to assess its validity. The researchers have been contacted multiple times for the dataset, but it has not been provided yet. This holding pattern has left the scientific community in a state of uncertainty, and until the dataset is made available, the evidentiary value of the study should be rated as zero. The importance of data transparency cannot be overstated, as it allows for independent verification of results and the possibility of new discoveries. The scientific process relies on the assumption that studies have been conducted honestly and with integrity, but without access to the raw data, this assumption cannot be confirmed. Therefore, it is crucial for researchers to prioritize data sharing to maintain trust and credibility in the scientific community.

    • Study on Ivermectin as COVID-19 prophylaxis adds to evidence but doesn't change understandingA recent study on Ivermectin as a COVID-19 prophylaxis did not significantly impact current understanding, but added to evidence of its antiviral properties against RNA viruses. Speaker also expressed curiosity about Ivermectin's origins and concerns over mandatory outdoor masking in Oregon.

A recent study on Ivermectin as a prophylaxis for COVID-19 does not significantly impact current understanding of the drug's effectiveness, as it was not a randomized controlled trial and its results cannot be definitively attributed to Ivermectin alone. However, the study does add to the growing body of evidence supporting Ivermectin's antiviral properties, particularly against RNA viruses. The speaker also expressed curiosity about the potential connection between Ivermectin's efficacy against various viruses and its origins in Japanese soil. Additionally, the speaker expressed concern over the recent implementation of mandatory outdoor masking in Oregon, as there is still limited evidence of COVID-19 transmission outdoors. The speaker reiterated their earlier position that there is no evidence of significant outdoor transmission and that such measures may be an unnecessary overreach.

    • Protecting the outdoors requires caution to prevent virus adaptationCaution needed outside to prevent virus adaptation, masks less effective, remember we're all in this together

Protecting the outdoors, an essential asset, requires caution even if the epidemiology does not warrant it. This is to prevent the virus from evolving and adapting to transmit effectively outside. Masks can be effective in preventing transmission indoors but not as much outdoors where distinctions between inside and outside are often arbitrary. However, as the weather turns and it becomes less pleasant to spend time outside, it's essential to be good to one another and not let fear or distrust dehumanize our interactions. In the end, we must remember that even outside, we are all in this together.

    • A concerned community leader's perspective on Portland's violent clashesA devout Christian and community leader expresses concern over the lack of police presence during Portland's Proud Boys vs Antifa clashes, emphasizing the importance of following New Testament teachings to find solutions and warning of lawlessness if the police continue to stay out.

The ongoing clashes between the Proud Boys and Antifa in Portland, Oregon, have led to a chaotic and dangerous situation in the city. This woman, who is a devout Christian and a community leader, expressed her concern about the lack of leadership and the absence of the police during these confrontations. She shared her personal experiences of violence and the impact it has on businesses and residents. The police, who have been criticized and attacked, have largely stayed out of the situation, leaving the citizens vulnerable. The woman emphasized the importance of following the teachings of the New Testament, such as love, patience, and creativity, to find solutions to this crisis. She also warned that if the police continue to stay out, lawlessness and disorder will prevail.

    • Finding Common Ground in Divisive TimesAmidst political divisions and lawlessness, remember shared values and engage in open dialogue to create a more peaceful society.

Despite the current divisive political climate and increasing lawlessness in places like Portland, it's essential to remember that the vast majority of people, regardless of political affiliations, share common values. A conversation with a liberal woman in Portland highlighted the importance of maintaining compassion and love towards those with differing viewpoints, even during challenging times. However, the rise of anarchic behavior may be linked to societal trends, such as vilifying the police and stripping individuals of their agency. Fear, underemployment, and a sense of powerlessness are also contributing factors. To counteract these trends, it's crucial to engage in open dialogue and get out of our ideological bubbles. Ultimately, by focusing on our shared values and finding common ground, we can work together to create a more peaceful and harmonious society.

    • Travel broadens perspective and fosters growthTraveling exposes us to diverse cultures and lifestyles, promoting empathy, unity, and inner growth

Travel and experiencing different cultures firsthand can broaden one's perspective and foster inner growth. The speaker shares how his international travels as a field scientist allowed him to understand the privileged life he lives in comparison to others. He also suggests that missionary trips, which expose young people to various ways of living, serve not only to spread religious beliefs but also to promote empathy and unity among people. The speaker's conversation with a woman whose children had gone on missionary trips to places like the Tenderloin district in San Francisco further emphasized the importance of recognizing and respecting the common humanity in all people, regardless of their backgrounds or circumstances.

    • Divided Society and the Importance of Recognizing Common GroundUnderstanding that all individuals deserve respect and recognizing the value of each side's insights can help bridge societal divides and find common ground.

We are divided as a society due to the manipulation of polarizing narratives, preventing us from recognizing our vast areas of agreement. The assumption that all individuals deserve respect is essential, but many have sold out their obligation to this principle. Those who agree on the desired society but disagree on methods or direction are an unstoppable majority in a democracy. However, those in power maintain our division by ensuring we cannot see the humanity in those with differing viewpoints. The "hidden tribes report" describes the "exhausted middle," a large majority that agrees on fundamental issues but lacks representation. To move forward, it's crucial to understand that each side has valuable insights and blind spots. By recognizing this, we can begin to find common ground and address the challenges facing our society.

    • Navigating the tension between progress and preservationRecognizing the value in both progress and preservation, and navigating the tension between them, is a more mature and productive approach to politics.

The political divide between left and right can be seen as a tension between moving forward into an uncertain future and preserving the past. However, relying solely on one side or the other is not effective. Instead, recognizing the value in both and navigating the tension between them is a more mature and productive approach. This requires acknowledging that neither side holds all the answers and that the system functions best through a balance of progress and preservation. Unfortunately, we have lost sight of this and have instead devolved into painting each other as detestable and unworthy of respect. To move forward, we must regain the belief in the loyal opposition and navigate the complexities of our political landscape with an enlightened perspective. As Elie Wiesel's "Night" reminds us, even in the face of great change and uncertainty, there is still beauty and life to be found.

    • Jews underestimated the severity of the Holocaust despite clear warning signsThe Holocaust saw many Jews clinging to optimism, unaware of the danger until it was too late, underscoring the importance of staying informed and vigilant.

Even as the threat of the Holocaust loomed large, many Jews continued to underestimate the severity of the situation and clung to optimism, despite clear warning signs. Elie Wiesel's account of life in Sykhet reveals how people went about their daily lives, seemingly unfazed by the rising tide of anti-Semitism and the encroaching presence of the Nazis. The Germans were initially seen as polite and even friendly, leading to a false sense of security. It was only when German troops began to occupy their town that the reality of the situation became clear. The chilling realization that the Germans, who were well aware of what they were doing, continued to behave as if nothing was amiss, adds to the horror of the Holocaust. The inability of the targeted population to fully comprehend the gravity of the situation until it was too late is a haunting reminder of the power of denial and the importance of staying informed and vigilant in the face of threats.

    • Understanding Complex Historical SituationsHistory is not always clear-cut, recognize the limitations of people's knowledge during crises, and emphasize transparency and communication.

History, particularly during times of crisis, can be more complex than it appears on the surface. The Holocaust during World War 2 is a prime example of this, as many people were unaware of the horrors unfolding around them. This is where the concept of theory of mind comes in, recognizing that people in the past had limited knowledge and understanding of events as they unfolded. The COVID-19 pandemic is another example of a complex situation, with differing perspectives and a lack of complete information. It's essential to remember that history is not always clear-cut, and it's crucial to consider the context and limitations of people's knowledge at the time. Additionally, being prepared for potential crises and understanding the importance of transparency and communication in addressing them are vital lessons to be learned.

    • Control of narratives during the pandemicQuestion sources of narratives, beware of dismissive or authoritarian camps, focus on most effective interventions

The control of narratives during the pandemic, particularly regarding the seriousness of COVID-19 and the justification for public health measures, is a powerful form of control that can significantly impact our response. The discussion also emphasized the importance of questioning the sources of these narratives and considering the possibility that they may be influenced by entities that don't have our best interests in mind. Furthermore, both the dismissive and authoritarian camps regarding COVID-19 are incorrect. The disease is indeed dangerous, but the response should not be purely authoritarian. The diminishing returns curve concept was introduced to illustrate that in complex systems with objectives, there comes a point where larger investments yield smaller returns. In the context of the pandemic, this means that we should focus on the most effective interventions first, rather than investing in less impactful measures.

    • Overlooking cost-effective solutions during a crisisDuring a crisis, prioritizing low-cost, effective solutions like vitamin D supplementation for those at risk can prevent a significant number of cases and save resources.

During a crisis like the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on low-cost, effective solutions first is crucial. However, the response to COVID-19 does not indicate that this approach has been prioritized. A clear example of this is the question of vitamin D deficiency. Although vitamin D supplementation is inexpensive, readily available, and has numerous health benefits, including strengthening the immune system, it has not been widely recommended to those most likely to experience deficiencies during winter months. This is especially concerning given that vitamin D deficiency can increase vulnerability to COVID-19. Additionally, vitamin D has been linked to benefits for various health conditions such as immunity, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. Overlooking such a simple and cost-effective intervention could result in a significant number of preventable cases. Therefore, it is essential to prioritize low-hanging fruit solutions in times of crisis to maximize their impact and minimize costs.

    • Overlooking vitamin D during pandemic raises concernsStay independent-minded, ask critical questions, collaborate, smile, put down phones, define fights, stand up for friends, and learn new things for personal growth and better relationships.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, addressing vitamin D deficiency, a simple, inexpensive, and effective intervention, was overlooked. This oversight raises concerns about incompetence or external influences driving public health policies. To avoid being influenced by external factors and make informed decisions, individuals should regularly ask themselves critical questions, be independent-minded, and collaborate with like-minded people. Additionally, smiling at people, putting down phones, defining fights for loved ones, standing up for friends, and learning new things can contribute to personal growth and better relationships. Overall, focusing on these actions can help navigate complex situations and improve individual and collective well-being.

    • Stay connected and informedJoin Patreon for exclusive Q&A, ask logistical questions via email, access content on multiple platforms, and subscribe to all channels for the latest updates.

Importance of community engagement and staying informed. The speakers encouraged listeners to join their Patreon for exclusive Q&A sessions and to ask logistical questions via email. They also mentioned the availability of their content on multiple platforms and the importance of making the most of the sunshine and enjoying good food, company, and experiences. Additionally, they reminded everyone to consider subscribing to all of their channels. Overall, the message was to stay connected, stay informed, and make the most of life's opportunities.

Science Friction: The 226th Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

In this 226th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss a new breakthrough in plant genetics: polyploid potatoes and corn from Ohalo Genetics, which are claimed to double the harvest from individual plants. Beginning with a discussion of naturally occurring polyploidy in other species, including frogs, we analyze the discussion of Ohalo’s new products with an evolutionary lens. Is it possible that biotechnology can evade trade-offs, or is this utopian thinking in the corporate world? Why do so many mistakes of modernity come in the form of people accustomed to complicated systems, applying their knowledge to complex systems? Finally: does Terrence Howard (recently on Joe Rogan) have a predictive model, or is he just blowing smoke?

Anecdote in Science: The 224th Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

In this 224th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss animal behavior: the implications of an orangutan using a medicinal plant to treat a wound, and the one-off videos that we’ve all seen—of cats preventing toddlers from falling, of a beluga whale retrieving a woman’s phone. What does this say about the minds of these other organisms, and about us? Also: dog domestication, from wolves, but not from foxes. And: the New York Times publishes more insipid garbage about vaccine injury, Bret returns to the question of what safety means, and The Nation turns its back on its muckraking roots.

Never Alone: The 223rd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

In this 223rd in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss science and religion, materialism and other ways of understanding our world. Can analysis and quantification explain everything? Can narrative, intuition, and creativity? All are or should be part of the scientific process; science is incomplete with only one mode. We also discuss models, how they fail, how difficult they are to assess, and what one recent climate model has to say about the role of air pollution in Earth’s temperature. Enlightenment values require that we use our freedom to inquire about all things that we are curious about. Also: happy Beltane!

Why Darwin was Right: The 222nd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

Why Darwin was Right: The 222nd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

In this 222nd in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss evolution, and how we know that it is true. We discuss the different kinds of beliefs that people have—beliefs that attempt to reconcile with reality, vs beliefs that reconcile with social standing and comfort. If your beliefs put you on the outs with your friends, do you change your beliefs, or your friends? Are you willing to give up the cocktail party for reality? We also discuss research published in 2000 and funded by Fauci’s NIAID, which demonstrated that it was possible to make chimeric coronaviruses, swapping the spike protein from one to a different species entirely. Finally: sex-biased gene expression, in which genes are expressed differently in the two sexes, in anatomical systems as varied as brain, kidneys, and liver.

In this 112th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we discuss the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

This week, we talk about the crumbling public health narrative around Covid. We talk about how people will change their positions, how to do it honorably, and how to engage in forgiveness. We talk about the March on DC, to happen on January 23rd. We discuss the masking of children, the impatience of the vaccinated, and the dropping of vaccine mandates in the private sector and in governments. We recommend three movies (see below). We discuss how to move forward without sadness, despair, or anger. And we discuss Thich Nhat Hanh, who died at the age of 95.

    Postmodernism and Truth

    Postmodernism and Truth

One of the biggest objections to Postmodernism is how it collapses traditional conceptions of objective truth. We analyse whether this criticism is valid and how it influences our understanding of reality and truth. Should we accept postmodernism as many others have, or is it thoroughly nihilistic at its core?

    #40 – What is Postmodernism?

    #40 – What is Postmodernism?

In this episode, Vigil and his returning guests, Danny and Matt, discuss the topic of postmodernism. This episode focuses on the differences between modernism and postmodernism and why talking about this topic is essential. The show then goes into whether postmodernism exists only in the realm of art and literary theory, or is it also a social phenomenon. We then discuss if postmodernism leads to cultural and moral relativism and whether that point of view can lead to a generally skeptical view of the world. We also cover the concern if postmodernism can cause science denialism, because of the general belief that we can't know anything for sure, no matter the tools we use. We finally finish the episode on the costs and benefits of using a postmodern lens to view the world.

THINGS HIDDEN 61: Dr. Ray Peat Deconstructs the Fake Left

David Gornoski sits down with Dr. Ray Peat, researcher of aging, nutrition, and hormones. Why are so many areas of science off-limits for criticism? Is Noam Chomsky really an anti-establishment figure as the Left claims? Why was postmodernism spread into the various institutions of America? Is there a conflict of interest between American and European GMOs? Join Dr. Peat as he takes his nutrition science gloves off and offers his insights on our current political and cultural state of affairs.
