Locking the Gates of Dentistry: Bret Speaks with Dr. Mike Mew

    en-usNovember 30, 2022

    Podcast Summary

    • Challenging Conventional Orthodontic Practices with PreventionOrthodontist Mike Mew advocates for preventing crooked teeth by addressing the root cause in facial structure and growth, instead of just correcting them after they develop.

Orthodontist Mike Mew is challenging conventional orthodontic practices by focusing on preventing crooked teeth instead of just correcting them after they develop. He argues that the root cause of crooked teeth often lies in facial structure and growth, and his approach aims to address this issue by helping faces grow to accommodate naturally straight teeth. Mew's work is based on the principles of his father, John Muir, and involves trying to make the face fit the teeth rather than the other way around. This approach has led him to a contentious battle for his professional license, as the dental council views his methods as unconventional and potentially harmful. Despite the challenges, Mew remains committed to his cause and continues to advocate for prevention as the best solution to crooked teeth. Listeners interested in learning more can check out the "Prevent Crooked Teeth" campaign mentioned in the podcast.

    • Modern lifestyle vs ancestral experiences and their impact on healthEvolutionary biology expert discusses obesity, crooked teeth, and their roots in modern lifestyle. Introduces the orthotropics program and the importance of sleep and temperature regulation for health.

Our modern lifestyle, with abundant food and other resources, differs significantly from our ancestors' experiences of scarcity. This discrepancy contributes to issues like obesity and crooked teeth, which are less common in the animal kingdom. The speaker, an expert in evolutionary biology, was impressed by another researcher's explanation for the crooked teeth phenomenon, which was grounded in evolutionary dynamics and drew on solid evidence. This discovery led to the development of the orthotropics program, which aims to correct the issue. The importance of good sleep and temperature regulation for overall health was also highlighted, with 8 Sleep being a solution that offers fine-tuned temperature control for couples.

    • Non-profit approach to facial development faces resistanceThe medical field's profit-driven nature hinders the adoption of effective, holistic solutions for various health issues, such as facial development.

The current structure of the medical field often stems progress and innovation, particularly when it comes from unconventional sources. This was evident in a recent discussion about a non-profithetic approach to facial development, which despite its effectiveness and potential to address various health issues, faces resistance due to its lack of profitability and the industry's reluctance to change. The speaker also highlighted the interconnectedness of various health concerns. For instance, crooked teeth are just the tip of the iceberg, as they are often linked to sleep apnea, forward head posture, and jaw joint problems. The root cause of these issues lies in the misalignment of the skull, which disrupts normal feedback and leads to health consequences. The current approach of moving teeth around after the jaw is formed incorrectly is merely a cosmetic fix, not a proper remedy. The medical field's resistance to change and profit-driven nature hinders the adoption of more effective, holistic solutions.

    • Is malocclusion caused by genes or developmental factors? The speaker argues that dietary changes due to industrialization are the primary cause of the increase in malocclusion, not new bad genes.

The disagreement between different perspectives on the cause of malocclusion (misaligned teeth) lies in whether it's due to bad genes or developmental causes. The speaker argues that the epidemic of malocclusion didn't start until the industrial revolution and the widespread use of tools for cutting food, which reduced the need for extensive use of incisors. This change in dietary habits, rather than genes, is suggested as the primary cause. The speaker challenges the idea that new bad genes emerged and spread rapidly enough to account for the prevalence of malocclusion since 1900, as the numbers don't add up. In essence, the argument is that developmental factors, not genetics, are the more likely explanation for the increase in malocclusion.

    • Cultural Changes and Diet's Role in MalocclusionThe speaker argues that cultural changes, particularly diet, could contribute to the spread of malocclusion beyond genetics, but faces resistance from the dental community and legal systems.

The debate surrounding the cause of malocclusion, or misaligned teeth, extends beyond just genetics. The speaker argues that cultural changes, specifically diet, could also contribute to this issue spreading like a contagion through a population. Despite having clinical evidence and potential hypotheses, the speaker has faced resistance from the dental community and legal systems, leading to a heated debate. The speaker's attempts to initiate a scientific debate on the utility of malnutrition were ignored, and they were met with allegations and a refusal to engage in discussion. However, the speaker's work has gained traction among younger generations, leading to the popularization of the "mewing" technique, which aims to improve facial form through posture adjustments. The speaker's efforts to help people improve their facial appearance and overall health have led to unexpected success and widespread interest. Despite facing resistance, the speaker remains committed to advancing the understanding of the causes of malocclusion and its potential solutions.

    • Neglecting children's physical development causes harmAdults must prioritize children's physical health, including dental and facial development, to prevent harm and negative consequences for future generations.

The lack of focus on the physical development of children, particularly in regards to dental health and facial structure, has led to an innocent error that is causing harm and potential future harm to millions. This issue, which stems from a lack of understanding and prioritization of physical development, is often met with resistance due to the emotional and personal nature of appearances. However, it is crucial for adults to acknowledge and address this issue, not only for those currently affected but also for future generations. By recognizing and preventing this error, we can help ensure the health and well-being of children and minimize the negative consequences of this developmental failure. Despite the challenges and disagreements, it is our moral obligation to prioritize the physical health of our children and work towards preventing this issue from continuing to harm future generations.

    • Discovering flaws in systems and advocating for changeIdentifying systemic issues and advocating for change, especially in children's health and wellbeing, is crucial to prevent harm and ensure a better future.

Our current systems and institutions, in various fields, can be flawed and in need of change. The speaker shares his personal experience of discovering a significant flaw in a scientific testing system, which went unaddressed for years, and is now being used to test COVID vaccines for children. He also mentions the issue of doctors disrupting the reproductive capacity of children based on their gender identity. These instances highlight the importance of addressing systemic issues and questioning the status quo, especially when it comes to children's health and wellbeing. The speaker's story serves as a reminder that we all have a responsibility to speak up and advocate for change when we identify a problem, rather than allowing it to persist and potentially harm future generations.

    • Environment vs. Genetics: The Debate over Facial DevelopmentSpeaker advocates for environmental influences on facial development, potentially opening new research avenues, but faces opposition and potential career consequences in the UK regulatory system.

The debate revolves around the etiology of facial development, with the speaker arguing for significant environmental influences and the opposition insisting on a genetic cause. If the speaker can convince the opposition that environmental factors play a significant role, it could potentially open up new avenues for research and treatments in orthodontics. However, the challenge lies not in winning the argument, but in convincing the opposition despite potential career consequences. The unique aspect of this situation is the regulatory system in the UK, which could provide an opportunity for change, unlike the more established and organized industries in the US. The speaker's perspective and approach to the issue might be different from those in the opposition, and they may be constructing arguments to protect their interests rather than engaging in a genuine debate.

    • Resisting Change in DentistryDespite the challenges of spreading awareness of a new dental method and facing resistance from established practices, the speaker remains committed to promoting change for the betterment of oral health.

The issue of misaligned dental practices is deeply rooted in developmental and environmental causes, and those who profit from it may resist change. The speaker has spent significant time pondering why people resist new ideas, often encountering resistance and awkward conversations, especially with dentists. He believes that younger generations, who haven't been indoctrinated into the old ways, are more receptive to new ideas, which is why the Mewing method has gained popularity. However, the speaker faces personal challenges, including financial losses, health issues, and the need for a large patient demographic to sustain his practice. He questions whether it would be better for him to step away from practicing dentistry and focus on spreading awareness of the harm being done and the remedy outside the traditional dental framework. Despite the potential benefits, he is hesitant due to the financial and professional consequences of losing his license and the need to maintain a large patient base in a specific location. Ultimately, he acknowledges that he is functioning inside a set of constraints and playing a rigged game, but he is not yet ready to abandon his practice.

    • Challenges of challenging established beliefs in healthcareDespite the risks and criticisms, it's important to share ideas that challenge the status quo in healthcare, question unnecessary interventions, and seek alternative explanations.

The discussion revolves around the challenges of making a difference in the face of established beliefs and practices, particularly in the field of healthcare. The speakers acknowledge the limitations of being one person and the need to challenge the status quo from the outside. They express doubts about the ability to change things from within, given the resistance and skepticism from those in positions of power. However, they also recognize the potential impact of the speaker's ideas and the importance of sharing them, despite the risks and criticisms. The speakers also touch upon the issue of unnecessary medical interventions and the need for a more nuanced understanding of the causes of certain health conditions. They emphasize the importance of questioning established beliefs and seeking alternative explanations, even if they go against the mainstream narrative. Overall, the conversation highlights the complexities and challenges of challenging the status quo in the field of healthcare, but also the potential rewards and impact of doing so.

    • The connection between facial structure and healthUnderstanding the link between sleep, breathing, and facial structure can lead to improved health and intelligence, but overcoming short-term interests to make meaningful changes is a challenge.

The connection between our physical appearance, specifically facial structure, and our health is more significant than we may realize. Sleep apnea, for instance, affects a substantial portion of the population and can lead to decreased intelligence and shortened lifespan. Good facial structure, on the other hand, can indicate underlying health and intelligence. Human beings have an evolutionary inclination to prioritize beauty due to its connection to function and underlying health. Therefore, the potential benefits of understanding and addressing the relationship between sleep, breathing, and facial structure are immense. However, the challenge lies in overcoming the short-term interests of those in power to make meaningful changes. In essence, your face acts as a CV of your health, a reflection of both genetics and environmental factors. This concept is fundamental to sexual selection, as we are drawn to characteristics that serve as proxies for underlying features that matter. Whether it's a good sense of humor or an attractive face, these traits are not arbitrary but serve as indicators of underlying qualities that contribute to success in life.

    • Facial appearance influences judgments and developmentFacial attractiveness impacts judgments in various domains, and neglecting healthy habits can lead to issues requiring orthodontic intervention. Preventing these issues early on through healthy habits promotes optimal development and reduces need for invasive treatments.

Our facial appearance, including the health of our teeth and jaws, plays a significant role in how we are perceived and treated in life. Research shows that facial attractiveness can influence judgments in various domains, including earning potential and even prison sentences. The development of our facial features is influenced by multiple factors, including diet, posture, and tongue position. Neglecting these factors can lead to issues that may require orthodontic intervention later in life, or even cause harm. The most effective approach is to focus on preventing these issues from arising in the first place, by promoting healthy habits from a young age. This could involve changes in diet, posture, and oral care, as well as addressing any underlying issues that may be hindering proper facial development. By addressing these factors early on, we can help ensure that individuals develop optimally and reduce the need for invasive treatments later in life.

    • Ways to enhance a child's potential without intentional effortModifying a child's diet and ensuring they get adequate sleep can lead to increased intelligence, better looks, and a more successful life.

There are various ways to enhance a child's potential without intentional effort, including modifying their diet and ensuring they get adequate sleep. This can lead to increased intelligence, better looks, and ultimately, a more successful and fulfilling life. This concept is not new, as evidenced by the existence of older books on the subject, such as "Why Raise Ugly Kids." However, some individuals, like the speaker, may not relate to certain aspects of these ideas, such as dyslexia, and may have reservations about writing or reading extensively on the topic. Despite the challenges, engaging with thought-provoking material can lead to valuable insights and the development of original ideas. Science and research should be approached as a means to validate intuitive leaps of reason rather than a random process of trial and error.

    • Misalignment between theoretical and empirical work in academiaThe prioritization of empirical work over theoretical work has led to a disconnect, undermining scientific progress and making it difficult to determine when hypotheses were formed, emphasizing the importance of a balance and recognizing the value of theoretical models in guiding intuition.

The prioritization of empirical work over theoretical work in academia, driven by funding structures, has led to a devaluation of theory and a disconnect between those conducting empirical research and theoreticians. This misalignment undermines the scientific process, as hypotheses must precede experiments for valid scientific discovery. The lack of transparency in the literature regarding when hypotheses were formed makes it difficult to determine the extent of this issue. A healthy balance between theoretical and empirical work is essential for scientific progress, and it's crucial to recognize that intuition, informed by a quality theoretical model, can lead to valuable insights.

    • Science and Industry: Balancing Exploration and Financial GainsThe harmonious blend of scientific exploration and philosophical perspectives in astrobiology can lead to groundbreaking discoveries, but financial gains in industries can compromise the scientific process, hindering progress.

The purity of scientific exploration can be compromised when it interfaces with industries and financial gains. The speaker's personal experiences in astrobiology and drug safety testing illustrate this concept. In the abstract realm of astrobiology, the lack of monetary incentives allows for a harmonious blend of experimental and philosophical perspectives, leading to groundbreaking discoveries. However, when science encounters industries with substantial financial stakes, such as dental appliances and orthodontics, the scientific process can be overshadowed and compromised. The speaker's own experiences with resistance to his ideas in the dental industry and the drug safety testing industry demonstrate this phenomenon. The delicate balance of scientific exploration can be disrupted when the market becomes involved, and progress may be hindered as a result.

    • Professional faces resistance, considers writing a bookDespite facing resistance from colleagues and regulatory bodies, a professional in a niche field remains optimistic and plans to write a book to present his ideas and findings without censorship.

The speaker, a professional in a niche field, is facing resistance from his colleagues and the regulatory body in presenting his ideas and findings. He feels that the system is structured against him and that he needs to publish a book to make his case without being censored. The speaker is currently dealing with a court case related to his work, which has been delayed due to the need for more time for the prosecution expert to review the defense argument. The speaker is considering reducing his clinical hours and focusing on writing a book, as the process of challenging his colleagues and the system has left him drained. He expresses frustration and disappointment that his colleagues have not yet understood his ideas, which he sees as self-evident, and hopes that if he can succeed in this challenge, he can use his headway to help others in similar situations. The speaker also mentions that he has encountered power before and that it is a formidable force. He is optimistic that he can make progress in his field and use that progress to help others, as he sees the current state of scientific thinking as being in a crisis.

    • The current scientific research system may be stifling innovation and driving talented individuals out of the fieldThe scientific community's emphasis on grants, publications, and conformity may be hindering the recognition and support of groundbreaking ideas, potentially leading to a misalignment and neglect of important research areas, and causing harm to individuals.

The current scientific research system, with its emphasis on grants, publications, and conformity, may be stifling innovation and driving talented individuals out of the field. This issue has been compared to a malocclusion, a misalignment or misfit, in the way we train and support scientists. The consequences range from neglecting important research areas for decades to actively harming individuals. However, the Internet has allowed these marginalized scientists to connect and find each other, potentially leading to a convergence and a challenge to the status quo. The next Einstein might be working in a fast food restaurant today because their groundbreaking ideas haven't been recognized or published. The lack of support for theoretical or unconventional research is a problem that has been recognized by multiple advisers in different fields. While it's important to acknowledge the challenges, it's also important to remember that the scientific community has the potential to adapt and make necessary changes. The increasing awareness of issues like sleep apnea, which was virtually unknown when some scientists qualified, shows that progress can be made.

    • The rapid growth of the Mewing method on social mediaThe Mewing method's popularity on social media signals a cultural shift towards alternative health practices and self-directed wellness. To capitalize on this trend, the best approach is to focus on scaling up and making the method accessible to a wider audience, while securing funding for research to further validate its benefits.

The Mewing method, which involves changing the position of the tongue to improve facial structure and potentially address various health issues, is gaining significant popularity among young people, particularly on social media platforms like TikTok. This trend is indicative of a cultural shift towards alternative health practices and self-directed wellness. The speaker, who has spent a decade working in the dental field, expressed surprise at the rapid growth of Mewing despite his own struggles to build a practice. He believes that the best way to capitalize on this trend is to focus on scaling up and making the method accessible to a wider audience, rather than trying to control it through traditional channels like orthodontists. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of securing funding for research to further validate the method and its potential benefits. Ultimately, the speaker sees this as an opportunity to extend the impact of his work beyond his current client base and potentially make a significant difference in people's lives.

    • Impact of Substances on Health: Sugarcane, Cocoa, and TobaccoUnderstanding the effects of natural substances requires consideration of concentration and processing, early life factors, and the importance of knowledge access for overall well-being. Truth and wisdom eventually prevail.

The natural consumption of certain substances can have positive effects on health, but the concentration and processing of these substances can lead to negative consequences. This was discussed in relation to sugarcane, cocoa leaves, and tobacco. The speaker also emphasized the importance of understanding the root causes of issues, such as dental development, which can start very early in life. He expressed a desire for publishers to recognize the potential profit in providing access to knowledge and mechanisms to improve overall well-being, rather than these becoming tools only for the privileged. The speaker also shared his belief that truth and wisdom come out in time and that humans, despite their potential for stupidity, eventually arrive at the right answers. The conversation ended with a call to share information and support for the speaker's continued efforts to spread knowledge.

    • Addressing dental issues and promoting healthy growthDelays in professional hearings can disrupt businesses, impact patient care, and cause uncertainty, but staying hopeful and advocating for important health issues can lead to positive outcomes.

Preventing crooked teeth and addressing other dental issues related to incorrect facial growth is an important and simple process. However, the interviewee is currently facing a delay in a hearing that could potentially impact their professional future, causing uncertainty and potential consequences for their patients and business. The lengthy hearing process, which could last up to a year, has the potential to disrupt their ability to employ staff, maintain patient appointments, and secure insurance. This situation highlights the potential challenges and obstacles that individuals and businesses can face when trying to make a positive impact in their industry. Despite the uncertainty, the interviewee remains hopeful and continues to advocate for the importance of addressing dental issues to prevent long-term health complications.

Anecdote in Science: The 224th Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

Anecdote in Science: The 224th Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

In this 224th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss animal behavior: the implications of an orangutan using a medicinal plant to treat a wound, and the one-off videos that we’ve all seen—of cats preventing toddlers from falling, of a beluga whale retrieving a woman’s phone. What does this say about the minds of these other organisms, and about us? Also: dog domestication, from wolves, but not from foxes. And: the New York Times publishes more insipid garbage about vaccine injury, Bret returns to the question of what safety means, and The Nation turns its back on its muckraking roots.

Never Alone: The 223rd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

In this 223rd in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss science and religion, materialism and other ways of understanding our world. Can analysis and quantification explain everything? Can narrative, intuition, and creativity? All are or should be part of the scientific process; science is incomplete with only one mode. We also discuss models, how they fail, how difficult they are to assess, and what one recent climate model has to say about the role of air pollution in Earth’s temperature. Enlightenment values require that we use our freedom to inquire about all things that we are curious about. Also: happy Beltane!

Why Darwin was Right: The 222nd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

Why Darwin was Right: The 222nd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

In this 222nd in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss evolution, and how we know that it is true. We discuss the different kinds of beliefs that people have—beliefs that attempt to reconcile with reality, vs beliefs that reconcile with social standing and comfort. If your beliefs put you on the outs with your friends, do you change your beliefs, or your friends? Are you willing to give up the cocktail party for reality? We also discuss research published in 2000 and funded by Fauci’s NIAID, which demonstrated that it was possible to make chimeric coronaviruses, swapping the spike protein from one to a different species entirely. Finally: sex-biased gene expression, in which genes are expressed differently in the two sexes, in anatomical systems as varied as brain, kidneys, and liver.
