    A Conversation with David Penchansky

    A Conversation with David Penchansky

Welcome to our episode with Dr. David Penchansky, professor emeritus in the Department of Theology at the University of St. Thomas, Minnesota.  This was a fascinating conversation. We learn about David growing up in Brooklyn in a family that were atheists and his own religious conversion on a "hippie commune," his words, in Washington State fifty years ago. He became an Assembly of God minister before entering the Catholic Church and working as a Professor.

He was trained as a Hebrew Bible scholar at Vanderbilt University and he has written numerous books, including  Understanding Wisdom Literature : Conflict and Dissonance in the Hebrew Text, Twilight of the Gods: Polytheism in the Hebrew Bibleand What Rough Beast?: Images of God in the Hebrew Bible. His most recent book Solomon and the Ant: The Qur’an in Conversation with the Bible, published by Cascade books, was the focus of much of our conversation.

We talk about how David became interested in the Quran and started to learn Arabic. Much of his interest began with his wife Hend Al-Mansour, a medical doctor from Saudi Arabia, who left medicine behind while studying at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, to work full time as an artist. You can check out her art, much of it focused on Arabian and Islamic themes at her website. I would love to have Hend on the podcast some day to discuss her art.

Then we did a deep dive into the three sections of Solomon and the Ant: The Qur’an in Conversation with the Bible, considering the themes of theodicy, polytheism, and prophetic revelation and the nine Suras he examines to explore these themes in the Quran and in conversation with the Bible.

David also mentioned a recommended English translation of the Quran, though we discuss in the podcast some of the issues with translating the Quran into any language other than Arabic. David recommended  the A.J. Droge translation and John Kaltner’s  general introduction to the Quran.

Avoiding Babylon was started during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. During these difficult and dark days, when most of us were isolated from family, friends, our parishes, and even the Sacraments themselves, this channel was started as a statement of standing against the tyrannical mandates that many of us were living under. Since those early days, this channel has morphed into an amazing community of friends…no…more than friends…Christian brothers and sisters…who have grown in joy and charity.

Avoiding Babylon does not criticize the hierarchy or institutional Church, especially Pope Francis. We recognize there is an unprecedented crisis in the Church, but we feel that there are other shows that address these issues that are more qualified than us. Instead, we try to remind ourselves and those who enjoy the channel that being Catholic is a joyful and exciting experience. We seek true Catholic fraternity and eutrapelia with other Catholics who, like us, are doing their best to live out their vocation with the help of God’s Grace. Above all, we try to bring humor and joy to the craziness of this fallen world, for as Hillaire Belloc has famously said:

“Wherever the Catholic sun doth shine,
There’s always laughter and good red wine.
At least I’ve always found it so.

Old Testament, Amos and Obadiah, Seek The Lord And Ye Shall Live, Come Follow Me

Old Testament, Amos and Obadiah, Seek The Lord And Ye Shall Live, Come Follow Me

Join us this week as we discuss Amos and Obadiah.  Amos is most known for his words on the purpose of prophets and the famine of hearing the words of The Lord.  Prophets of our youth have special place in our hearts.  Latter Day prophets have themes.  We can be saviors with a lower case "s" for those that have not received the gospel.

    From Come Follow Me:
God chose Abraham’s seed to be His covenant people so that they would “be a blessing” to all people (see Genesis 12:2–3). But instead, by the time of Amos’s ministry, many of the covenant people were oppressing the poor and ignoring the prophets, making their acts of worship empty and meaningless (see Amos 2:6–16). True, the nations surrounding them were also guilty of great sins (see Amos 1; 2:1–5), but that has never been an excuse for God’s people (see Amos 3:2). So God sent a herdsman from Judah named Amos to preach repentance to the Kingdom of Israel. Later, God also declared through the prophet Obadiah that although the Kingdom of Judah had been destroyed, the Lord would gather and bless His people again. The covenant people had strayed from the Lord, both prophets testified, but they would not be cast off forever. When God reveals His secrets to His servants the prophets (see Amos 3:7), we can take it as a sign that He still wants to help us live up to the covenants we made with Him.

Episode 164 - Say What?! - Why is THAT in the Bible Part 5

Episode 164 - Say What?! - Why is THAT in the Bible Part 5

There’s no doubt humor and laughter are part of the goodness of God. He loves to see His people delighting in not only creation, but each other, and of course, in Him.  Yes,  God is sovereignty and holy, but we can’t forget that He does have a sense of humor.

The "Why is THAT in the Bible," passage we look at in this episode  is a great example of God's sovereignty, holiness, and humor! Join us as we delve into Balaam and his talking donkey and answer questions like:  Why the heck is the donkey talking? And maybe even crazier, why does Balaam engage in conversation with the donkey like it was no big deal it’s talking to him?! Why does God make the donkey speak? Has He ever before or since opened the mouth of an animal and allowed it to speak? Why was God stopping Balaam from moving forward? Who is Balaam and why is he angry? And of course, why is this passage in the Bible?

    Nobody Dead-Named Paul

    Nobody Dead-Named Paul

Dead-naming! Divine wrath! A bit of casual blasphemy! John and I talked so much on this topic and of course there was about 45 minutes of stuff I couldn’t even use because I suck at technology. This episode is not specifically about only polyamory; I think it’s time to normalize all of us having access to our own faiths and not tolerate anyone pushing us out of something that truly belongs to us.

    Texts we looked at:

    New Testament, Acts 9: 1-22

    Background Characters:

Rabban Gamliel The Younger: Saul studied under this great rabbi prior to his change in faith. For a deep dive on this guy, check out https://www.jewishencyclopedia.com/articles/6495-gamaliel-ii

Also you will be able to see there the intense love among Jewish people for footnotes and references in general.

St. James: OG Patriarch of the Church back in the day, and brother of Jesus. I like to think he would have cordially despised a fair number of today’s preachers and pastors. Here’s some nice quotes from him:

GOD EXISTS, WHAT QUESTIONS DO WE HAVE FOR HIM

GOD EXISTS, WHAT QUESTIONS DO WE HAVE FOR HIM

This episode is for people who have questions regarding God and why he works the way he does. I started by going through the first initial question as to why we even have questions to begin with. And anyone born into religion will have these questions. Then I go into the idea if God is actually listening. Now religion teaches you not to question God, but I observe should we be asking him questions. I finish out the episode by asking the questions people may have regarding God intervention. These are the main questions we all ask of God. So to you all, enjoy, listen, share, and come be apart of the community.

Episode 153 - Hijacked Scripture Round 2 - Real Truth about False Teaching Part 11

Episode 153 - Hijacked Scripture Round 2 - Real Truth about False Teaching Part 11

We had such a huge response to our "Hijacked Scripture" episode, we decided to do Round 2! But in this episode, we look specifically at verses of the Bible that have been ripped out and twisted by the Word of Faith movement. These charlatans have perverted the Word of God and hijacked Scripture in order to make their false teachings seem credible. Join us as we apply context and Scriptural consistency to these verses. See how the likes of Joseph Prince, Tony Evans, and others are lying to you and mocking God.

Episode 143 - Truth Matters - Real Truth about False Teaching Part 1

Episode 143 - Truth Matters - Real Truth about False Teaching Part 1

This is the third round of our “Real Truth” series. And the purpose of all of them is to look at current and hot topics and teachings and apply Biblical Truth to them. And that is really easy when you are talking about eastern meditation or those who call themselves Christian witches. But what about when those who call themselves Biblical Christians are teaching lies and are being followed by many who would also call themselves Biblical Christians?

That’s exactly what we are going to spend the next several weeks finding out. And we are going to look at some very specific false teachings and teachers, but in this episode, we give an overview and answer some important questions.like:  Who are we to “judge” others who profess to be Christians? What’s the difference between bad theology and false teaching? What makes what we say truth and what they say lies? Since there is only one Bible, why are there so many different teachings on it? Does it grieve Jesus that His people spend time opposing each other? Isn’t the most important thing to love Jesus and love others? Do the other details matter in the long run?

Episode 142 - Tactical Gear and Necessary Weapons - The Truth Will Set You Free Part 13

Episode 142 - Tactical Gear and Necessary Weapons - The Truth Will Set You Free Part 13

As Christians, we are guaranteed to be drawn into spiritual warfare. God has given us His armor to do just that! But how are we to engage with Satan and his demons? What power do we have against them? Are we to firmly denounce them and tell them to leave us alone? Are we to rebuke them with Scripture? Are we to pray the blood of Jesus against them and their schemes? Are we to pray a hedge of thorns around ourselves, our loved ones, and houses for protection? Or are we stand firm in God's Word and resist the devil by refraining from being tempted and sinning?

Join us as we finish up the book of Ephesians and delve into what the Armor of God is and how it is to be properly used by believers.

🧨Ignite Your Heart For God: Bible Study

🧨Ignite Your Heart For God: Bible Study

We have been given the words of life. God has allowed us to understand His will and how to be pleasing in His sight. Moreover, He has required that we spread this message with a righteous and holy life. If He finds us with our flame in our heart unlit, unwilling to be faithful with what has to be shared, He will surely not allow us to share in His kingdom. (Luke 16:12) “And if you haven’t been trustworthy with someone else’s property, who will give you your own?”  We all must ignite our hearts for God and burn bright.  So Burn Bright! -OR- Be No Light At All! #JesusFreak #Jesus #Church #Bible #God

Episode 139 - Protecting Our Own I (Christian Wives) - The Truth Will Set You Free Part 10

Episode 139 - Protecting Our Own I (Christian Wives) - The Truth Will Set You Free Part 10

In Protecting Our Own, we delve into one of the most famous (or infamous, depending on how you view it) passages in all of Scripture - Ephesians 5:22 - 33. Paul's directive to Christian wives to submit to their husbands, and to Christian husbands to love their wives as Christ loves the church. It’s both famous and sadly, infamous, because of the misunderstanding surrounding it. For some, it’s a mandatory reading at their wedding, for others, it’s a “you better not dare read it or quote it to me” passage. And there are a lot of articles, blogs, opinions, and commentary on this Eph. 5 passage. And it can get really confusing reading them all. So we are going to try and sort it out by showing why some have an issue with it, the wrong ways it’s been interpreted, and then looking at it correctly in context – within the context of the original audience, within the context of the whole chapter and the whole letter to the Ephesians, and within the context of other Scripture. And we will pull in some commentary from some very credible and sound Biblical theologians. There is so much to delve into in these verses, we need two episodes to do it! In this first part, we will look at the imperative for Christian wives to submit to their husbands. Join us!

Episode 125 - Transformed to Fit in the Body - Be Transformed Part 6

Episode 125 - Transformed to Fit in the Body - Be Transformed Part 6

There are so many reasons people give for not being a part of a local church -   I can get better preaching from a podcast. I can worship on my own. I can study the Bible on my own. I have Christian friends that are my “church.” I have to work on Sundays. I have family obligations on the weekends. I feel like church is boring. I don’t feel like there’s a place for my child or teen. I don’t know where there’s a good church near me. I’m not sure I have the same beliefs I used to. I don’t agree with my church’s stance on sexuality. I’ve had my feelings hurt by church members. The people at my old church are hypocrites. I don’t feel like there’s a place for me to serve.

Does the Bible say say anything about being a part of a church, about becoming a member of a church, about worship, about what to look for in a church, when to leave a church? Or is much of this subjective. Tune it to this week's episode for answers to these questions and more, and how the church fits into us being transformed!

Episode 124 - Transformed to Crush the Fear Factor - Be Transformed Part 5

Throughout history, there has been no shortage of things to be fearful of. While the objects of fear may have changed through the ages, people being afraid hasn't. The United States and the entire world looks very different than it did even just 3 years ago. As studies have shown, recent events have changed what people fear the most. The world can change drastically in the blink of an eye. And along with changes in the world, comes changes in what people fear. Fear is relative. So how can we be transformed to crush the fear factor, no matter what the prevailing fear may be and no matter how dire the consequences of it may be?

Join us as we continue in our transformation journey. In this episode, we can be transformed to crush the fear factor!

    WHO CREATED GOD

    WHO CREATED GOD

This episode is regarding who created God. And I know this is going to be a little controversial when you have people who believe in him. They will hear this and say God was always here. There is no way he was created because is the highest high. So I go into this topic about first who is God then his relationship with the universe, people, and earth.
