    CPTSD is an Attachment Wound

    CPTSD is an Attachment Wound

Our last episode introduced the brain as a social organ, and how this topic relates to the neurobiology of relationships. Today, we dive deeper into how the brain develops through social interactions, why social connection is a survival need, and what happens in the body when we experience connection with other people.

Matt Bush of Next Level Neuro is joining Jennifer and Elisabeth to discuss the impact of trauma on the brain’s functioning, and therefore, our relationships, expression, sense of safety, and overall health. They talk about what happens when you’re not primed for connection in childhood, how the brain is wired to be part of the social structure in relationships, what part of the brain guides us toward dysregulation and protective outputs, and lots more.

If any of this sounds confusing, be sure to listen for Matt’s definitions of attachment schema and C-PTSD from a neurosomatic perspective, which make it easier to understand how these systems and inputs come together for integration.

You’ll also finally learn why complex trauma is an attachment would, and most importantly, that change is possible and how you can get started NOW. Tune in for all this and more!

    Topics discussed in this episode:

    • The impact of attachment patterns on brain function
    • How the brain develops through social interactions
    • The role of the insular cortex
    • John Bowlby’s attachment theory
    • How a mother’s nervous system impacts a child’s

Relationships, Complex Trauma, and your Nervous System

Relationships, Complex Trauma, and your Nervous System

Do you have trouble getting out of your head and into your body? Does your trauma affect your ability to make deep connections with others? For today’s guest, following a neurosomatic intelligence framework allowed her and her partner to build a stronger relationship, while learning more about themselves in the process.

Sharing her NSI experience with hosts Jennifer Wallace and Elisbeth Kristoff is Dr. Jolie Hamilton, a relationship expert who now brings neurosomatic intelligence into her practice. They discuss how our nervous systems interact with each other, healing generational trauma, and the power of using NSI tools anytime, anywhere.

Our nervous systems have the power to comfort or dysregulate ourselves and others, but it’s important to remember that dysregulation is inevitable in any relationship. The key is to expand the capacity of our nervous system, and you can learn that from this interview.

If you have an insecure attachment style, want to try NSI tools with your partner or just want to understand the science of this topic, listen to this episode!

    Perfectionism is a Trauma Response

    Perfectionism is a Trauma Response

Our society rewards those who work hard, appear to never make mistakes, and seem to have everything under control. We’ve collectively decided on what perfect looks like and attributed perfectionism with the ideal person.

What if we told you that perfectionism is actually a protective measure used to prevent oneself from feelings of rejection, abandonment, and worthlessness? These words don’t quite scream “perfect” do they?

Trauma Rewired hosts Jennifer and Elisabeth have touched upon this trauma response before, but today’s episode is a deep dive into how it can develop and lead to harmful avoidance behaviors. They deconstruct perfectionism, including defining the three types of perfectionism and how it interplays with CPTSD elements like the inner critic.

You’ll learn the many health consequences that the chronic stress of perfectionism can cause, and how to distinguish excellence from perfectionism. Jennifer and Elisabeth also share their experience with perfectionism, and how it can push us into burnout or freeze states.

Perfectionism is not an attainable goal, which makes it debilitating and a hindrance to healing trauma. To take the first step towards moving out of perfectionism, tune in!

    Topics discussed in this episode:

    • Defining the 3 types of perfectionism

    • Perfectionism as a trauma response

    • Jennifer’s example of setting yourself up for failure

    • The effects of perfectionism on our health

    • Maladaptive coping mechanisms for perfectionism

    • How to recognize perfectionist behaviors and thinking

    • Jennifer on taking action against her perfectionism

    • Trauma healing, neurosomatic intelligence, and integration

    • Limiting beliefs push the loop of perfectionism

    • Elisabeth on the importance on self-regulation tools in her life

    • How perfectionism negatively affects organizations and employees

    • Steps Elisabeth has taken to heal her perfectionism and workaholism

    Dissociation

    Dissociation

Disassociation is one way that our brain keeps us safe from things that may cause us stress or harm. Whether it’s a simple moment of daydreaming or constant state of dissociation in an abusive relationship, being cognitively and physically disconnected is not conducive to healing.

During this episode of Trauma Rewired, Jennifer and Elisabeth discuss the spectrum of dissociation and how it can affect the interoceptive system, or how we process and send information to the brain. They go over the symptoms of dissociation, sharing their personal experiences of dissociation related to childhood trauma.

Our survival brain sees healing as a threat, but there are ways to rehab the deficits in the nervous system to give more clear information to the brain, helping us to think and see more clearly. For example, training our interoceptive system can fight our hypersensitivity to threats and bring us out of disassociation.

To learn what tools can help you retrain your nervous system and the learned conditioned responses that are no longer serving you, tune in to this episode!

    Topics discussed in this episode:

    ● Misconceptions about dissociation

    ● The definition of dissociation and its symptoms

    ● Dissociation as a protective mechanism

    ● How the interoceptive system works

    ● Dissociation and the freeze response

    ● How dissociation affects the body and how we feel pain

    ● The link to avoidance behavior

    ● Tools to bring yourself back from a state of dissociation

    ● Body dysmorphia and deficits in the visual system

    ● Living in the body to find a safe place to feel and heal

Feeling Emotions like Joy and Connection Can Be As Scary As Grief and Shame

Feeling Emotions like Joy and Connection Can Be As Scary As Grief and Shame

In our first episode on emotional repression, we discussed how trauma can cause repressive behaviors and why emotional expression is necessary to living a healthy life. Today, we’re concluding the conversation by addressing two emotions that impedes the healing process: grief and shame.

Matt Bush of Next Level Neuro is back to continue the discussion with hosts Jennifer Wallace and Elisabeth Kristoff. To showcase the effects of grief on the nervous system, they all give examples of client experiences with repressed emotions and their own grief practices.

Despite our innate need to express emotions and have connections with other human beings, expressing even positive emotions can be difficult. By the end of this episode, you’ll understand why positive emotions are so threatening to the nervous system and why minimum effective dose may be the key to healing.

Listen in to learn about how to work through shame, the healing power of nature, and finding safety in emotional expression!

    Topics discussed in this episode:

    ● Why neuro trainers need to be trauma informed

    ● Jennifer’s grief practices and co-regulation

    ● How grief affects the nervous system

    ● Learning to connect with your grief

    ● Shame as an immobilizing and protective emotion

    ● Using NSI to work through shame

    The Fawn Trauma Response

    The Fawn Trauma Response

In this episode we will be discussing the least understood, and most insidious four F’s in trauma response, fawn.

This survival adaptation is difficult to pinpoint, because fawn can often be confused with empathy or general care, but if not dealt with, can get to a toxic level for the fawner. Neglecting yourself for the sake of others can cause chronic issues, not only in the body, but in creating genuine connections as well.

The missing piece to overcoming fawn is to first identify it, then to gain tools to regulate the nervous system to create safety in the body. However, the tools are difficult to implement when you are unaware of the trauma response in the first place.

Neurosomatic Intelligence Coach, Jennifer Wallace and Elisabeth Kristoff from Brain-Based Wellness, uncover what fawn looks like and how it may show up in your life. Along with practical tools to regulate the nervous system in situations where fawning was the automatic response, and how to override that with an intentional one.

Finding safety in your own body IS possible and so is living authentically. Listen in for more info!

    Topics discussed in this episode:

    • What does fawn mean in terms of a trauma response

    • Why fawn develops

    • Recognizing fawn in yourself

    • How its triggered

    • Practical tools to move passed fawn

    • What is sexual fawning

    The Freeze Trauma Response

    The Freeze Trauma Response

Have you been putting off sending that important email or having a difficult conversation? Thesecould be signs of freeze trauma response. Not taking action and procrastinating seems likeinnocent occurrences, because we all do it right? However, these can be seriously damaging to our lives and nervous systems.

The prolonged trauma that lives in our bodies that doesn’t have a chance to move through us
can wreak havoc in not only our lives but in our bodies. We have a hard time knowing when we
are in freeze response because it is so difficult to pinpoint because it gets roped in with
character attributes like laziness or dissociation.

Then why do we do this? Well, our brains are very good at protecting ourselves from real or
perceived threats, so they create these barriers to not put ourselves in situations where we
could potentially have an exaggerated stress response. Then we continue to procrastinate, and
    go into numbing activities.

However, there is a way to move through this and design a life where procrastination isn’t the
norm, and we can live more fulfilling, healthier lives. Rewiring our bodies isn’t an easy task, but
    the reward is exponential.

Tune in today to hear how you can move out of the freeze trauma response and into life!

    Topics discussed in this episode:
    ● What is the freeze response?
    ● Why does the freeze response occur?
    ● What happens when someone stays in a freeze response?
    ● How dissociation falls under freeze response
    ● How working with the nervous system can help remedy freeze response
    ● Protective postures used in freeze response
    ● Interrupting the protective posture feedback loop
    ● Shame associated with freeze response
    ● Is freeze response related to depression?
    ● Importance of identifying and understanding freeze response

    The Flight Trauma Response

    The Flight Trauma Response

“Living a life of growth and expansion is as simple as living in your nervous system.” - Jennifer
    Wallace

Arriving early, leaving late, overthinking, can’t sit still, breathing quickly, and always keeping
busy, are just a few examples of how the flight trauma response can manifest in our lives. This
response is biologically built in to keep us safe from harm, but what if that harm is perceived anddoesn’t require fleeing the scene? This can be detrimental to our personal and professional livesand keep us in a state of high alert with stress hormones coursing through our bodies that canbe quite harmful.

In order to combat this trauma response, the nervous system must be regulated, but it is difficult to do that when we can’t pinpoint whether the response is flight or what the trigger is. The first step is to understand the response, and come back to the body to understand the sensations that come with it.

This is where applied neurology has proven beneficial to create a safe container for nervous
system regulation to allow those of us with this response to come out on the other side with the tools and ability to self regulate. Regulate so we can have that hard conversation without
leaving half way through or to be able to finally relax and dig our feet in the sand while soaking
    up the sun.

In this episode, hosts Jennifer Wallace and Elisabeth Kristoff founder of Nero-Somatic Intelligence and Brain Based Wellness share their personal experiences with flight response and how it affected their lives when they didn’t
    have the tools to regulate.

Tune in for information about tools on how to recognize and regulate the flight trauma response sensations to be able to live a full and expansive life!

    Topics discussed in this episode:
    ● What is a flight trauma response
    ● What you can do to develop an awareness of this response and how to regulate it
    ● What role does respiration play
    ● Behaviors associated with flight response
    ● Jennifer and Elisabeth’s personal experiences with flight
    ● The physiological response that happens during flight response
    ● How applied neurology can help regulate the nervous system
    ● How breathwork during flight may not be right for you
