    Perfectionism is a Trauma Response

    Perfectionism is a Trauma Response

Our society rewards those who work hard, appear to never make mistakes, and seem to have everything under control. We’ve collectively decided on what perfect looks like and attributed perfectionism with the ideal person.

What if we told you that perfectionism is actually a protective measure used to prevent oneself from feelings of rejection, abandonment, and worthlessness? These words don’t quite scream “perfect” do they?

Trauma Rewired hosts Jennifer and Elisabeth have touched upon this trauma response before, but today’s episode is a deep dive into how it can develop and lead to harmful avoidance behaviors. They deconstruct perfectionism, including defining the three types of perfectionism and how it interplays with CPTSD elements like the inner critic.

You’ll learn the many health consequences that the chronic stress of perfectionism can cause, and how to distinguish excellence from perfectionism. Jennifer and Elisabeth also share their experience with perfectionism, and how it can push us into burnout or freeze states.

Perfectionism is not an attainable goal, which makes it debilitating and a hindrance to healing trauma. To take the first step towards moving out of perfectionism, tune in!

    Topics discussed in this episode:

    • Defining the 3 types of perfectionism

    • Perfectionism as a trauma response

    • Jennifer’s example of setting yourself up for failure

    • The effects of perfectionism on our health

    • Maladaptive coping mechanisms for perfectionism

    • How to recognize perfectionist behaviors and thinking

    • Jennifer on taking action against her perfectionism

    • Trauma healing, neurosomatic intelligence, and integration

    • Limiting beliefs push the loop of perfectionism

    • Elisabeth on the importance on self-regulation tools in her life

    • How perfectionism negatively affects organizations and employees

    • Steps Elisabeth has taken to heal her perfectionism and workaholism

Feeling Emotions like Joy and Connection Can Be As Scary As Grief and Shame

Feeling Emotions like Joy and Connection Can Be As Scary As Grief and Shame

In our first episode on emotional repression, we discussed how trauma can cause repressive behaviors and why emotional expression is necessary to living a healthy life. Today, we’re concluding the conversation by addressing two emotions that impedes the healing process: grief and shame.

Matt Bush of Next Level Neuro is back to continue the discussion with hosts Jennifer Wallace and Elisabeth Kristoff. To showcase the effects of grief on the nervous system, they all give examples of client experiences with repressed emotions and their own grief practices.

Despite our innate need to express emotions and have connections with other human beings, expressing even positive emotions can be difficult. By the end of this episode, you’ll understand why positive emotions are so threatening to the nervous system and why minimum effective dose may be the key to healing.

Listen in to learn about how to work through shame, the healing power of nature, and finding safety in emotional expression!

    Topics discussed in this episode:

    ● Why neuro trainers need to be trauma informed

    ● Jennifer’s grief practices and co-regulation

    ● How grief affects the nervous system

    ● Learning to connect with your grief

    ● Shame as an immobilizing and protective emotion

    ● Using NSI to work through shame

    Emotions and Your Nervous System

    Emotions and Your Nervous System

“How many experiences in love do we have to have (where we burn it down or blow it up) before we actually understand love is real, and we start to change our response to those people or those situations?”

Emotions are necessary for our survival, telling us when to be scared or cautious for our own protection. Trauma causes us to view situations and people through the lens of our past experiences, making us hypervigilant and sensitive to any perceived threat of danger. This dysregulation of our emotions, and in turn our nervous system, undoubtedly has a profound effect on our health and relationships.

The quote above comes directly from this episode of Trauma Rewired, in which host Jennifer is joined by Elisabeth Kristof of Brain-Based Wellness and Matt Bush of Next Level Neuro, both founders of the Neuro-Somatic Intelligence Coaching Certification Program. They explore the topic of emotions with a neuro somatic intelligence approach.

You’ll learn how emotion is stored in the body, why emotional regulation is important for our body’s functioning, and how trauma affects our expression or suppression of emotions. Matt also shares new and exciting discoveries in the study of emotions.

Tune in for an in-depth conversation on emotions, including the physiology and why they’re important for the healing process!

    Topics discussed in this episode:

    ● Emotions and the limbic system

    ● Why emotions are necessary for survival

    ● Homeostasis and emotional regulation

    ● Feelings vs. emotions

    ● How trauma affects how we express (or don’t express) emotions

    ● Elisabeth gives an example of suppressing her emotions

    ● The personal experience of pain

    ● Where emotions are stored in the body

    ● Mechanism of memory in relation to trauma

    ● Creating and releasing tension/trauma in the body

    ● Emotions as triggers

    ● How do we train ourselves to perceive emotions/relationships differently?

Complex Trauma and the Developmental Brain (cont'd)

Complex Trauma and the Developmental Brain (cont'd)

“We all know this phrase, ‘if you wanna get out of the hole, stop digging.’ But when you're in complex PTSD, the brain is digging and you can't make it stop. It just keeps going back to these same experiences and these same feelings. It shows up in long-term development of the nervous system. It shows up in the physical body. It shows up because we don't know how to stop the digging.”

Today, co-hosts Jennifer Wallace and Elisabeth Kristoff of Brain-Based Wellness are again joined by co-founder of the Neuro-Somatic Intelligence Coaching Certification Program, Matt Bush. During the second half of their discussion on complex trauma and the developing brain, you’ll learn why it’s so hard to break the brain’s unhealthy patterns and how you can “stop the digging.”

In this episode, Matt explains how the three areas of the brain make a framework to process emotions, regulate emotions, and incite action. Trauma Rewired has mentioned many times that without integration, long-lasting change is difficult, but without the survival brain and emotional brain working together, integration, specifically vertical integration, is impossible. This may sound overwhelming, but the good news change IS possible because of neuroplasticity.

If you want a deep understanding of vertical integration and how trauma affects the developing brain, tune in to learn more!

    Topics discussed in this episode:

    • What is vertical integration?
    • Our brain’s protective mechanisms and what triggers them
    • Integration of emotional work and body work
    • How developmental trauma affects vertical integration
    • Dysregulation between the brain’s right and left hemisphere
    • Effects of imbalances in the nervous system
    • The SAID principle in relation to nervous system imbalance
    • Creating safety to break the pattern of dysregulation
    • Benefits of learning more about trauma and the brain

Trauma and the Inability to Rest

Trauma and the Inability to Rest

We briefly talked about the death cycle of winter and rebirth in the “Trauma & the Holidays” episode, but today, Trauma Rewired is addressing how trauma inhibits our ability to rest — which is a crucial element to healing and changing maladaptive behaviors.

Hosts Jennifer Wallace and Elisabeth Kristoff of Brain-Based Wellness discuss the consequences of poor rest, including derailing the brain’s functioning. Similar to when you’re fatigued and at your full capacity, constantly running on high alert can make us more susceptible to triggers and result in stress responses.

Most of us already know that sleep is necessary for our overall health and wellbeing, but letting the mind and body truly rest is also crucial to healing. Memory integration and nervous system regulation are infinitely harder to achieve when we don’t leave time for rest and recovery.

Tune in to learn why slowing down is sometimes hard to do, and how to support yourself in the process!

    Topics discussed in this episode:

    • How trauma affects our internal states
    • Why rest is crucial to our health, but can also feel threatening
    • Actions Elisabeth is taking to change her behaviors and let herself rest
    • Reasons it’s difficult to rest and recover, and its effects
    • The loop of trauma and inability to rest
    • Trauma and Stress responses
    • Experiences with insomnia
    • Is rest a privilege?
    • Rest vs. freeze/shut down
    • The role of rest in the healing process
