S04E08 | It's Layered | Delve Deeper Into... Motherhood with Skhoe

“It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men." | Frederick Douglass

Motherhood is a hood not all get to permanently reside in, but all have to pass through on their journey to adulthood. In this episode, we speak with Skhoe, a mother of over 21 years who has been mothering her two children in the diaspora. From Thailand to Swaziland, Washington D.C. to Switzerland.

We try to glean from Skhoe the many lessons she has learnt on her motherhood journey; discuss the questions one has when parenting or thinking of parenting; and take a moment to reflect on what success as a parent looks like. As African women in the diaspora, we recognise that the community and support typical of raising children in Zimbabwe is not afforded to us as easily, whilst also recognising that parenting needs to be done a little differently in order to survive.

What are some of your lessons from mothering or being mothered?

    Keep up with Skhoe

Parenting Insights for our Social Media Age

Parenting Insights for our Social Media Age

Forbes Magazine recently released a summary of the findings of thirty-two studies that looked at how to parent children and teens in our current social media age. Among the findings was this: that a stricter parenting approach may be a better approach. The data suggests that parents who take more active parenting approaches results in better outcomes for their kids as opposed to those parents who take a more passive hands-off approach. The authors state that “overall, studies find that adolescents report less problematic use when parents use more parental monitoring, restrictive or active mediation, or strict internet and smartphone rules.” The research also found that when parents enlist stricter rules to limit overconsumption in the context of love and supportive dialogue, kids will spend less time using social media. This is good and encouraging news for Christian parents who take their Ephesians six responsibilities seriously, to bring their children up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

    Know your parenting styles

    Know your parenting styles

In this episode, hosts Dr. Meghna and Devishobha throw light on the 4 major styles identified by psychologists and the major factors of your personality determining your parenting style. Why is this important? Because Parenting Styles can predict a large part of the parenting outcome. Simply put, parenting style is the style of communication, response and discipline parents use to raise their children.

Devishobha and Meghna share the details of the 4 major parenting styles- Authoritarian, Authoritative, Permissive and Uninvolved. They go on to discuss the distinct characteristics of the parenting styles, what makes the best parenting styles, what influences parenting styles, what to do to adopt the best parenting style, and finally how to reconcile parenting styles with your partner.

Make Good Parenting Choices with Laura Smith

Chloe's story has Laura reflecting on how our parenting is shaping our kids, and it's probably not the things we think that are going to stand out or impact them the most.

She encourages us to consider ways we might be hurting them, hurting the relationship with them, or how they view authority.

She calls us to repent, to seek God and prioritise pursuing Him in this life - because nothing else will matter at the end of our days.

    Gentle Parenting F*cks Me Up

    Gentle Parenting F*cks Me Up

I’m gonna go ahead and say it. Gentle parenting f*cks me up. In more ways than one. I have a love hate relationship with this style of parenting because it gets into your psyche and forces you to do some deep, internal soul searching. It also forces you to re-parent yourself which is hard enough in itself and I’ll get into that. However, as challenging as this style of parenting has been for us, I do believe it’s the only way to go – at least for me and my kids. Over the past two years, we have researched and practiced gentle parenting with our son and man is it HARD. Gone are the days of time outs and punishments as we learn more about mindful parenting and child development. In this episode, I review what gentle parenting is, briefly touch on the science behind it, share some of our gentle parenting scenarios and techniques and I get into why this is so hard when it comes to re-parenting yourself.

If you are interested in gentle parenting, follow @biglittlefeelings on IG and purchase their gentle parenting course ASAP. I don't know where I would be right now on my parenting journey without them. It was a complete game changer.

Radical role-modelling... the key to parenting with Emma Holdsworth

Radical role-modelling... the key to parenting with Emma Holdsworth

So much of our parenting triggers + challenges hark back to our own early, formative years. Our attachment to our own parent or caregiver impacts our relationships, how we form identity in adolescence, how we cope with stress + our resilience... so how do we feel more like we're nailing this parenting thing?

Emma Holdsworth from Treehouse Family Counseling has spent her entire adult life supporting families to become the best parents they can be, connecting them to their core values as a parent, holding space for new Mothers as a postpartum doula + helping burgeoning families with her vast experience as a sandplay therapist + counsellor.

Emma firmly believes doing our own inner work and exploring ourselves more deeply, examining our own past – is actually the key to parenting education. In this episode Emma talks to us about the formative years of childhood + that  behaviour (of any kind) is just how kids communicate their needs, as parents we can stuff it up by taking it super personally!

She also advocates what she calls radical role modelling – be that which you want for your kid, yourself. It's easier said than done, we know... this is what I love about Emma's realistic approach to shifting our shit. It’s a process, don’t be afraid to show them the process or strategy behind trying to build sustainable + healthy change.
    THAT is radically modelling adulting.

029: You Will Never Do It "Right"

029: You Will Never Do It "Right"

Today I want to talk about how it is basically impossible to do parenting “right”... someone will always judge you, call you out for something, and try to make you feel as though you are doing it wrong! It's rough to be a parent and now with social media and the like, there is a lot of judgement and people telling you that you are doing it wrong and should be doing it this way or that way. Ugh!

Our job as parents is to keep our kiddos safe, let them know that they are loved beyond words, and to teach them to be amazing human beings that are capable of going out into the world independently. With that said, what the heck is the “right” way to parent? I am no parenting expert- except that I am a parent, but in my opinion, the right way to parent is how you parent. Unless you are physically and/or mentally abusing your children, not providing them basic needs, and the like, you are doing alright! So, listen in and I'll give you my take on how I parent and after you listen, let me know your thoughts!

What was your biggest takeaway from today’s episode? What do you think about some people being the judge and jury of parenting? Share with me- take a screenshot of you listening and tag me or hit me up with a DM on IG
@livingjoyfulandwell. I can’t wait to hear from you!
