The natural version of consensus refers to ideas that become widely accepted due to overwhelming evidence. In the current landscape, it's important to navigate medical misinformation, fake news, and censorship by critically evaluating sources and seeking out evidence-based information. The Dark Horse discusses these issues and more, starting the hour by reflecting on the importance of consensus in understanding complex topics.

    • Scientific consensus is about widely accepted theories with least assumptions, not coercionQuestioning and challenging theories in scientific communities ensure their validity and reliability, maintaining the integrity of scientific consensus

Consensus in scientific communities is not about unanimous agreement through coercion, but rather the widely accepted theory that best explains available evidence with the least assumptions. The absence of intense debate or opposition to a theory does not necessarily indicate the presence of a genuine consensus, but rather the dominance of the prevailing theory. The culture of questioning and challenging in scientific communities, such as aviation, plays a crucial role in ensuring the validity and reliability of scientific theories. The obligation to challenge and speak up when something seems amiss is essential to maintaining the integrity of scientific consensus and advancing knowledge.

    • The importance of challenging consensusChallenging consensus is crucial for safety and progress. Suppressing it can lead to tragic consequences and hinder learning and growth.

The obligation to challenge consensus, even if it's a widely accepted one, is crucial for safety and progress. This was highlighted in the discussion about aviation safety, where disregarding the right to challenge has led to tragic accidents. The importance of this principle was further emphasized in the context of a recent controversy where a scientific fact was censored under the guise of hate speech. The fact, which stated that on average, males are stronger than females, was removed from social media platforms. This is not a new discovery, but the justification for censorship was questionable and underscores the importance of the right to challenge and question consensus. The obligation to challenge is a safety factor, and suppressing it can have detrimental consequences. It's essential that individuals and societies remain open to diverse perspectives and encourage healthy debates to promote learning and growth.

    • Labeling factual claims as hate speech can degrade the conceptMaintaining distinction between factual claims and hate speech is crucial for effective protections against serious harm

The attempt to label factual claims as hate speech, such as the scientific fact that males are stronger than females on average, can lead to a degradation of the concept of hate speech itself. This can result in the loss of the ability to declare something false and harmful, and instead, protect individuals or groups based on feelings rather than objective reality. This can ultimately rob the most vulnerable individuals of necessary protections against serious harm. This issue is not unique, as it shares similarities with the degradation of the concept of medical misinformation, where facts based on scientific evidence are forbidden from being discussed. It's crucial to maintain the distinction between hate speech and factual claims to ensure that protections are effectively targeted towards serious harm and not misdirected towards less significant issues.

    • Attempts to silence doctors and suppress dissenting opinions through terms of service and propaganda campaignsForcing consensus through closed-door meetings and interfering with people's livelihoods can be problematic and different from following science. Encourage open and transparent discussions for knowledge and truth.

The destruction of categories like medical misinformation and hate speech in the name of consensus can be frightening and problematic. Quickly formed consensus behind closed doors, especially those cloaked in science, can be different from following science. This week, we saw examples of this with the FLCCC Alliance, a group of doctors with credible clinical experience and demonstrable success in treating COVID-19, whose PayPal account was suspended. The attempt to silence them through terms of service and propaganda campaigns has been unsuccessful, and now they are being allowed to speak but not be supported financially. This is just one example of a larger issue, where forces are trying to create an artificial consensus using the lightest hand possible, even going as far as interfering with people's livelihoods. It's important to be aware of these tactics and to encourage open and transparent discussions in the pursuit of knowledge and truth.

    • Censorship of COVID-19 vaccine researchThe scientific consensus on COVID-19 vaccines and treatments is not absolute, and the suppression of dissenting voices and research is a significant concern. Elsevier's removal of a paper on myocarditis adverse events highlights the importance of transparency and open debate in the scientific community.

The scientific consensus on COVID-19 vaccines and treatments is not as solid as it may seem, and the suppression of dissenting voices and research is a significant concern. The removal of a peer-reviewed paper on myocarditis adverse events associated with COVID-19 vaccines by Elsevier, one of the oldest and largest academic publishers, is an alarming example of this trend. The paper by doctors Jessica Rose and Peter McCullough was temporarily removed without explanation, leaving the findings inaccessible to the scientific community. This incident underscores the importance of transparency and open debate in the scientific process. The consensus on the safety and effectiveness of vaccines and treatments is built on a foundation of coercion, with careers, reputations, and even livelihoods at risk for those who challenge the prevailing narrative. It is crucial to question the sources of information and consider the potential motivations behind the suppression of dissenting voices and research.

    • Managing the COVID-19 Pandemic: Endemic vs. EradicationSome experts advocate for managing COVID-19 as an endemic disease through early treatment, while others push for eradication via vaccines. A global, collaborative approach and evidence-based strategies are crucial, regardless of the pandemic's future status.

The discussion revolves around the current state of the COVID-19 pandemic and differing perspectives on managing it. While some believe it will become endemic and focus on early treatment, others advocate for eradication through tools like vaccines. The conversation also touches upon the potential implications of endemicy, including the concept of "super immunity," and the importance of a global, collaborative approach to managing the situation. Ultimately, the speakers agree on the need for a thorough, evidence-based conversation on the best strategies for dealing with COVID-19, whether it becomes endemic or not. The discussion also includes a mention of a recent Australian news article suggesting that catching COVID after vaccination may improve immunity.

    • A comprehensive approach to managing COVID-19Focus on vaccines, early treatment, drugs, vitamin D, outdoor activities, and air filtration for effective COVID-19 management.

The focus on vaccination as the sole solution to the COVID-19 pandemic may be misguided. While vaccines can help reduce the severity of symptoms, they do not completely stop transmission. Therefore, it's crucial to prioritize early treatment and the use of available drugs. Additionally, there is a need for a nuanced conversation about public health measures, rather than creating division among vaccinated and unvaccinated populations. Other essential steps include encouraging vitamin D supplementation, especially in higher latitudes and indoor settings, promoting outdoor activities, and improving indoor air filtration systems. Ultimately, a comprehensive approach that utilizes every tool at our disposal is necessary to effectively manage the ongoing pandemic. The current consensus, which is coercion-dependent, is not an actual consensus and may hinder our ability to find effective solutions.

    • Reversal of traditional dynamics of consent and dissentSuppression of dissenting voices, particularly those questioning mainstream narratives, is a concern. Platforms like YouTube enforce community guidelines to silence controversial voices, resembling cancel culture. Free speech is crucial for idea exchange and evaluation, and efforts to undermine it can interfere with being heard.

We are witnessing a reversal of the traditional dynamics of consent and dissent in various societal contexts. The suppression of dissenting voices, particularly those questioning the mainstream narratives on sex, gender, and public health, is a crucial aspect of this phenomenon. This destruction of dissent is the mirror image of the manufacturing of consent. The role of platforms like YouTube in enforcing community guidelines and silencing controversial voices has become a concern. The tactics used in the context of scientific debates bear striking resemblance to cancel culture, with some individuals who have experienced it firsthand now deploying it against others. This raises questions about the nature of these silencing efforts, particularly when they are not rooted in protecting people's health or well-being but rather in maintaining a specific narrative. The importance of free speech lies in its role in the exchange and evaluation of ideas, and efforts to undermine this fundamental right often go beyond limiting one's ability to speak and extend to interfering with their ability to be heard.

    • Freedom of speech and the right to choose what to listen toPreserving these essential freedoms in today's virtual public square is crucial for maintaining a free society, despite the temptation to fact-check and suppress information or create a 'new man' through distancing from traditional values.

The right to free speech and the right to choose what to listen to are essential components of a free society. Speaking into a "manufactured void" or being silenced through censorship is not what the framers of the Constitution intended when they protected free speech. The ability to fact-check and suppress information may seem beneficial, but it's a disingenuous response that goes against the principles of a free society. Additionally, there's a historical trend towards creating a "new man" by distancing young people from traditional values and replacing them with scientifically authorized values, often under the guise of neutral language. This process, which began in the late 19th century, has deep roots and continues to shape our modern culture wars. The importance of preserving the freedoms of speech and the ability to choose what to listen to in today's virtual public square cannot be overstated.

    • Manipulating the Language of ScienceScience can be manipulated and weaponized to control narratives, making it essential to question entities claiming scientific authority and demand transparency

The language of science can be manipulated and weaponized to create consensus and push ideologies, even behind closed doors where analysis is not transparent. This is not true science, but rather a tool for those seeking to control the narrative. It's important to question any entity claiming the mantle of science if it cannot acknowledge obvious facts or if it behaves in ways that are not aligned with the truth or the public's best interests. Unfortunately, many people, particularly in elite circles, may celebrate a lack of understanding of scientific process, making it easier for such manipulation to occur. It's crucial to recognize this and demand transparency and accountability from those claiming to speak for science.

    • The disconnect between scientific claims in public policy and the scientific literatureAssessing scientific claims in public policy requires critical thinking due to common issues like missing hypotheses, unjustified claims, and data mining, which can misinform the public.

There's a disconnect between the scientific claims made in public policy and the actual scientific literature. Many people, including media elites, cannot assess the data or analysis themselves, leading to an assumption that if they cannot evaluate it, it must be correct. However, this assumption is illogical as there are common issues such as missing hypotheses, unjustified claims, and data mining. These issues are not uncommon and can be used to misinform the public. The overuse of the "science is the answer" mentality, particularly among liberals, has led to the misapplication of scientific principles in areas where they don't belong. This not only deranges the scientific process but also has significant consequences. It's crucial to be aware of this issue and to question where the garbage is and who it's fooling.

    • Balancing sensitivity and inclusivityRecognize power dynamics, engage in respectful dialogue, and find solutions that accommodate everyone's needs without erasing their identities or experiences.

This week saw two controversial issues that sparked intense debate. The first was an article in Teen Vogue featuring an image of anatomy for a non-prostate owner, which was criticized for erasing women's identities and reality. The speaker argued that it was not just a matter of respecting the rights of trans individuals but also recognizing the power dynamics at play. The second issue was the cancellation of a Halloween pumpkin parade at a Seattle school due to concerns over exclusion and discomfort. While some saw this as an inclusive move, others felt it was an unnecessary overreaction that took away from the joy of the holiday for all students. Overall, these incidents highlight the importance of balancing sensitivity and inclusivity with tradition and individual expression. It's crucial to engage in respectful dialogue and find solutions that accommodate everyone's needs without erasing their identities or experiences.

    • Balancing individual rights and experiences with inclusivity and sensitivityThe push for consensus and avoiding discomfort can lead to the suppression of individual rights and experiences, but it's important to balance these needs in a way that respects all perspectives and promotes inclusivity and sensitivity.

The push for consensus and avoiding discomfort can lead to the suppression of individual rights and experiences. The discussion revolves around the cancellation of a Halloween parade and its replacement with themed units of study. While some argue this change is for the greater good and to avoid discomfort, others see it as an infringement on the rights of those who enjoy the traditional Halloween celebration. This issue extends beyond education and is reflected in broader societal trends, where efforts to avoid discomfort or potential offense can result in the suppression of fun and enjoyment for the majority. The conversation also touches upon the idea that those enforcing these changes may not truly represent the majority and may be driven by a desire for power rather than genuine concern for others. Ultimately, the conversation highlights the importance of balancing individual rights and experiences with the need for inclusivity and sensitivity.

    • Checking for unexpected hazards before drivingBe aware of potential hazards and take necessary precautions to ensure safety, even if it seems unusual or time-consuming.

Checking for unexpected hazards before driving is crucial, even if it may seem unusual or time-consuming. The speaker shared a personal experience of always checking her car hood for sea lions before driving, which may seem odd to others. However, this habit was formed due to her learning to drive in a place where such a check was necessary. While it might not be a common practice in all areas, it's essential to be aware of potential hazards and take necessary precautions to ensure safety. The email from a listener further emphasizes the importance of respecting each other's views and opening our minds to new perspectives.

Anecdote in Science: The 224th Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

In this 224th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss animal behavior: the implications of an orangutan using a medicinal plant to treat a wound, and the one-off videos that we’ve all seen—of cats preventing toddlers from falling, of a beluga whale retrieving a woman’s phone. What does this say about the minds of these other organisms, and about us? Also: dog domestication, from wolves, but not from foxes. And: the New York Times publishes more insipid garbage about vaccine injury, Bret returns to the question of what safety means, and The Nation turns its back on its muckraking roots.

Never Alone: The 223rd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

Never Alone: The 223rd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

In this 223rd in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss science and religion, materialism and other ways of understanding our world. Can analysis and quantification explain everything? Can narrative, intuition, and creativity? All are or should be part of the scientific process; science is incomplete with only one mode. We also discuss models, how they fail, how difficult they are to assess, and what one recent climate model has to say about the role of air pollution in Earth’s temperature. Enlightenment values require that we use our freedom to inquire about all things that we are curious about. Also: happy Beltane!

Why Darwin was Right: The 222nd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

Why Darwin was Right: The 222nd Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

In this 222nd in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss evolution, and how we know that it is true. We discuss the different kinds of beliefs that people have—beliefs that attempt to reconcile with reality, vs beliefs that reconcile with social standing and comfort. If your beliefs put you on the outs with your friends, do you change your beliefs, or your friends? Are you willing to give up the cocktail party for reality? We also discuss research published in 2000 and funded by Fauci’s NIAID, which demonstrated that it was possible to make chimeric coronaviruses, swapping the spike protein from one to a different species entirely. Finally: sex-biased gene expression, in which genes are expressed differently in the two sexes, in anatomical systems as varied as brain, kidneys, and liver.

    This Will Probably Be Censored

    This Will Probably Be Censored

Censorship has been around since ancient times and can serve as a protection for the vulnerable, but free speech is a critical personal liberty and should be protected from those that look to control.  This week, Big Tech companies have flaunted their control over conservative, christian and political voices that would threaten their worldview.  Dr. Jonny discusses the legal, moral and cultural injustice these brazen acts inflicted on our liberties. Censorship exposes a deep rooted insecurity of one’s position, and we should be asking, “what are you afraid of?”
