    Podcast Summary

    • Starting small in November for long-term successInstead of waiting for January, start small changes in November for long-term success. Focus on one thing at a time and enjoy the process.

Instead of waiting until New Year to make significant changes in our lives, we can start incorporating new habits and routines in November. The speaker shares her personal experience of realizing this during her reflections on the month and the approaching winter season. She suggests that putting too much pressure on ourselves to be "perfect" in January can lead to an all-or-nothing approach, which can ultimately set us up for failure. Instead, she recommends taking small steps and focusing on one thing at a time. Using her own experience with hair care and skin care as an example, she emphasizes the importance of finding what we enjoy and making it a consistent part of our routine. By taking a thoughtful and deliberate approach, we can make meaningful changes and set ourselves up for long-term success.

    • Focus on one new habit at a timeStart small and focus on consistency for greater success in making positive lifestyle changes

When it comes to making positive changes in our lives, it's important to focus on adding one new habit at a time, rather than trying to implement multiple changes all at once. This approach allows us to establish each new habit before moving on to the next, reducing the mental and emotional overwhelm that can come with trying to do too much too quickly. Whether it's a new skincare routine, dietary supplement, daily walk, or meditation practice, starting small and focusing on consistency can lead to greater success in the long run. So, instead of waiting for the new year to make big resolutions, consider making November your month for small, incremental changes that will set you up for success in the coming year.

    • Balancing Authenticity and MindfulnessBe true to yourself while practicing respect and empathy towards others, recognizing that we cannot please everyone and that recovery is a process.

We have a responsibility to be authentic to ourselves while also being mindful of how our actions may impact others. However, it's important not to change our authentic selves too much to avoid triggering people or to please everyone. This can be a challenging balance, especially when it comes to sharing our ideas, values, and personal experiences on social media. For example, someone who has recovered from an eating disorder may feel the need to make their online presence safe and non-triggering for others, but in doing so, they may inadvertently suppress parts of their authentic self. It's essential to recognize that we cannot please everyone and that our role is to be true to ourselves while also practicing respect and empathy towards others. Recovery is a process, and it's okay not to be in a constant state of recovery but to continue growing and learning from our experiences.

    • Breaking free from external validationFocusing on mental and physical well-being leads to a healthier body and mind, regardless of others' opinions.

Self-empowerment and recovery from an eating disorder involves breaking free from external validation and focusing on one's own mental and physical well-being. The speaker shares how she used to change her content and eating habits to avoid triggering comments from others, but now that she's established in her recovery, she no longer lets others' opinions influence her. She realizes that her mindset is the key to her journey and that living an authentic life, eating what she wants, and exercising when she wants, leads to a healthier body and mind. The speaker also acknowledges the heavy burden of constantly monitoring her body image and the limitations it placed on her, but now she's able to let go of that and focus on living her life without stress or restriction.

    • Embracing natural body changes is crucial for recoveryGive yourself permission to focus on overall well-being and self-acceptance, rather than societal expectations and personal guilt, during the recovery process.

Allowing yourself to embrace your natural body and its changes, even if it means letting go of societal expectations and personal guilt, is an essential part of the recovery process. Anna, in the discussion, shared her personal journey of dealing with her athletic build and the fear of being judged for it. She emphasized that her body is her own and she is entitled to look and be however she wants, as long as it's not a result of restrictive practices. Anna also highlighted how her active lifestyle is a way for her to cope with past trauma and connect with herself. Therefore, it's crucial for individuals in recovery to give themselves permission to let go of the focus on aesthetics and instead, focus on their overall well-being and self-acceptance.

    • Exploring Alternative Realities for Emotional Well-beingVirtual reality can provide emotional comfort and motivation when our current reality falls short. However, it's crucial to strike a balance and not let virtual reality replace real-life experiences entirely. Doing an actionable routine, even when not feeling our best, can help improve mood and overcome negative emotions.

It's important to allow ourselves to access different realities, both virtual and in real life, for our emotional well-being. Sometimes, our current reality may not provide us with the motivation, comfort, or positivity we need. In such cases, virtual reality, like social media or podcasts, can offer an alternative reality that makes us feel good. However, it's essential to strike a balance and not let virtual reality replace real-life experiences entirely. Another key takeaway is the power of doing an actionable routine, even when we're not feeling our best. By following a routine that makes us feel good when we're happy, we can replicate those feelings when we're in a funk or a rut. This can help us overcome negative emotions and improve our overall mood.

    • Intentional actions improve emotional stateSmall actions like self-care routines, aligning appearance with mood, and recognizing hairstyles' impact on mood can significantly enhance emotional well-being.

Small, intentional actions, like following a self-care routine or aligning your appearance with your mood, can significantly improve your emotional state. The speaker shares her personal experience of how doing simple tasks like showering, brushing teeth, and doing her skincare routine can help lift her mood, even when she doesn't feel like it. She also talks about how the vibe of her hair can affect her mood. For instance, having her hair in a high ponytail made her feel productive and charismatic, but when she was in a chill mood, she felt more comfortable with a low bun. By recognizing and aligning her hairstyle with her current mood, she felt more authentic and in sync with herself. Overall, the speaker emphasizes the importance of taking small, deliberate actions to help manage emotions and improve overall well-being.

    • Presenting ourselves well can impact our confidence and moodBelieving in our abilities, setting high expectations, and taking care of our appearance can boost confidence, shift mood, and improve overall well-being

The way we present ourselves and the vibes we put out can significantly impact how we feel and perceive ourselves. Dressing up, doing our hair, and making ourselves look put together, no matter how small the changes, can help boost our confidence and mood. Similarly, the mindset we adopt towards our goals and limitations can shape our reality. By setting high expectations for ourselves and believing in our capabilities, we can achieve more than we think possible. Additionally, taking care of our physical appearance can be a simple yet effective way to help shift our mood and improve our overall well-being.

    • Dreaming Big: Limiting Your Goals Can Limit Your PotentialEmbrace the excitement of dreaming big, let go of fear, ignore external opinions, believe in self, and continuously learn to reach high goals.

Limiting your goals can limit your potential. The speaker shares her experience of holding back her dreams to avoid disappointment and the importance of setting high goals despite the fear of falling short. She encourages embracing the excitement of dreaming big and the potential growth and learning that comes with it. The speaker also highlights the importance of not letting external opinions hold you back and the power of self-belief. Furthermore, she emphasizes the value of continuous learning and acquiring new skills, even in unexpected places like a job.

    • The importance of continuous learning for personal growthInvesting time in learning new things enhances knowledge, competitiveness, sleep quality, and overall well-being.

Continuous learning and personal growth are essential for both professional and personal development. The speaker acknowledges that she has been neglecting her learning habits recently due to work priorities, but she realizes that investing time in learning new things, whether it's finance, social media, or biology, will help her grow and stay competitive. Moreover, learning is not only beneficial for gaining knowledge but also for improving sleep quality, which is crucial for overall health and well-being. The speaker plans to add learning time to her daily routine and is excited to explore various topics that interest her. By prioritizing continuous learning, we can trigger new parts of our brain, deepen our understanding of various subjects, and ultimately, enhance our lives.

    • Preparing for a 'soft launch' in JanuaryAnna is gradually improving her content and social media presence before a planned 'soft launch' in January, encouraging listeners to make improvements throughout the year instead of waiting for a specific date.

Anna is focusing on establishing a solid foundation for her content and social media presence before adding new learning elements to her routine. She's aiming for a "soft launch" into January, starting some things now while getting her baseline ready. Anna acknowledges the appeal of a new year, new me mentality, but encourages listeners to start making improvements gradually throughout the year instead of waiting for a specific date. Anna invites listeners to engage with her on her podcast page, Inside Anna's Mind, and her fitness page, Anna Archer Fitness. She values feedback and insights from her audience and looks forward to continuing the conversation with them.

#038 - Celebrating Over 40s Fashion with Catherine Summers

In today's podcast episode I chat with Catherine Summers, an award-winning blogger of over-40s style blog Not Dressed As Lamb.

Not Dressed As Lamb is one of the leading and most established over-40s fashion and style blogs in the UK and around the world. 47 year old Catherine’s key message is to encourage women of all ages to oppose the outdated notion of age-appropriate dressing and to wear whatever they like (she is the founder of the hugely successful Instagram hashtag #iwillwearwhatIlike). An expert at pattern-mixing and bright colours, she describes her style as ‘preppy with an eclectic twist’. Always looking to challenge the norm, she blogs about her personal style and high street picks, as well as ageing issues, health and beauty, and weekly musings about her daily life.

In this interview we chat about why fashion is important to Catherine and how the clothes you wear can make a difference to your overall wellbeing.

Catherine shares what the term age-appropriate means and why she is opposed to it.

Catherine shares lots of advice, wisdom and inspiration in this interview. It was a joy to speak to her.

In fact, we recorded this interview just before lockdown so this chat exists in a place where the world was slightly different.

As we start edging back into a certain sense of normality in our daily lives I thought it was a good time to share Catherine’s inspiring perspectives about how fashion, style, and we dress ourselves can impact our overall wellbeing.

2001 What Message Are You Sending Your Child?

2001 What Message Are You Sending Your Child?

Family time is meant to be spent together. But many parents focus on the schedule leaving out the most important things, the children. What message are you sending your child?

The holidays are a lot of fun and stressful all at the same time. it's a basket full of emotions. The children have their ideas of fun and the parents have their ideas of relaxation.

Desire to be supported and encourage by other like-minded women? Join us at Women of IMPACThttp://bit.ly/WomenofIMPACT

Sometimes vacations and holidays can be more stressful than the family's every day.

Now that is not something anyone wants. Making memories, laughing and giggling all the while enjoying hanging out as a family. That's what you want to remember. Not all the arguments and disagreements, tension and stress. Leave that for the birds.

You want experiences that will last a lifetime.

Your kids are tuned into you. Unfortunately, we as parents tune them out. Not necessarily on purpose. It happens easily because of the struggles in our every day.

We have so much planned out to keep life flowing smoothly, but leave out what matters most.

What message are you sending your child?

Are you creating memories for the heart or frustration for the fits?

    The K.I.S.S. ~ Take A.I.M. & Parent on purpose!

Life is so precious and it goes by so fast. Make your time together count. Time as a child takes an eternity to get to the end of the day. But as an adult, you blink and 3 days have gone by.

So parent on purpose so your days and nights are cherished.

    1. Create intentional hang-outs at home or on the road. Make time where you are doing something together creating memories. Maybe it's game night or movie night. You could even throw in ice cream night. But don't rely on the fact that it will just happen. It won't. 12 years will go by and then you will have a child graduating from high school.
    2. Schedule special times. Whether you are on vacation or having a holiday gathering, make the times special. Cook something new. Go somewhere unique and explore. The idea is to do something that you don't normally do every day.
    3. Be present. Put down the electronics. Enjoy each other with deeper conversations. Actually look at each other's eyes. Let the distractions melt away. This is the best way to have fireworks every day. Be present!

What you do as a family is not only creating memories for years to come, but you are solidifying the importance of family!

    It's your living legacy!

Have fun with fireworks and sparklers. Send the message of love, hope, and grace as you create your now with the family!
